Ron Paul!!!

The Texas Republican with a Libertarian streak astounded the political world when he raised $5M last quarter… so what’s the right adjective to describe what he did yesterday, when supporters contributed more than $4 million in just 24 hours?

In New Hampshire, GOP officials marvel at Ron Paul’s organization in the Granite State and his ability to raise money. These officials say they would not be suprised at all if Ron Paul took 3rd or 4th in the primary and meant the death knell for at least one top tier candidate. It speaks to the power of independents in NH; Bush beat McCain in 2000 among republicans but Indies put McCain over the top.

Ron Paul himself talked about his big day on Fox News Radio.

“It is amazing, it’s even surprising to me, but of course very pleasant to know that people were spontaneously coming to us,” he said. “Because it was not organized by the campaign. I have not yet talked to or met the individual that organized this, but yesterday’s fundraising was all done on the internet, and it was all done spontaneously. So something significant must be going on out there in the countryside.”

Asked why people donated in such numbers, Paul said “I don’t think anybody has a full explanation. I think it’s a message that people were starved for, in that people are very upset with what’s happening. They’re upset with the war, they’re upset with the economy, they’re upset with the future. The young people don’t look forward to paying into Social Security, and I come up with answers that are plausible and reasonable. And I think this is what has stirred their interest.”

Read the rest of the interview after the jump.

Who do you think is donating this money?

I meet them all the time. Huge rallies, I try to talk to people all the time. Some Republicans are disenchanted. They don’t like the war. Some Democrats, they don’t believe this Hillary stuff, and Obama that they’re going to stop the war. They said they’re going to keep the troops there will into 2013.

What do you want to say to the voters who contributed to your campaign via the internet?

I appreciate very much their support… I’m going to do my darndest to represent them well, and make sure this cause keeps moving on.

I can understand the Ron Paul movement. He is anti abortion and fiscally conservative. He is guided by the Constitution and advocates a small federal governmnet that only does what government should do. I am interested in him but reluctant only because I am worried that his desire to disengage from the war on terror will be perceived as weakness (such as during the Clinton years)and embolden our enemy. But another way of thinking is this: Do our enemies have us where they want us by having our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan while they slowly take our young lives and drain our money and does this entice more young radicals to join the fight? Are they depleting our blood and treasure?
Our we hurting ourselves even with the best of intentions? Maybe we have done enough and after a few more months of stabilizing Iraq we should start to turn it over in an orderly way and just leave an outlying major base for strategic purposes. I am worried that Paul would just leave and we would have a mass genocide like Vietnam.

Although many pundits still have huge doubts about the viability of the Ron Paul campaign, this latest fundraising success ensures that the “top tier” canidates will have to react to Dr. Paul’s message. “It ain’t over till its over.”

When he takes 1st palce does it mean a death knell for all the “top tier” candidates?

Hang on to your hats people we’re coming and we’re coming hard and fast.

I’d hope the appropriate adjective would be “legitimizing”, because as “amazing” and “incredible” as the Paul campaign’s most recent efforts have been, it speaks not to the campaign but to the message.

What is most amazing about this result is that it wasn’t a campaign tactic, it was a grassroots effort that culminated in a rather historical outcome. Real people with real political positions self-organized and made this happen.

Mr. Paul is the benefactor of this happening but the story is the message.

Liberty is a powerful motivator, and Ron Paul is believed to be one of her agents.

Thanks for the coverage Mr Cameron.

Just want to say that Ron Paul is not big only in USA, many countries in Europe for example organize Ron Pail meetup groups and write articles about him. I see many times that reporters are saying that Ron Paul is doing poorly in the polls, but just look at this article, it shows that Ron Paul has better chance to win the nomination than many of us thought:

http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig8/pitkaniemi1.html

Here is one pick from the article:

“For example Carter was only polling 1% in 1975 and he won the presidency. Back in 1991 Clinton’s support was at 2% and he became the president. Joe Lieberman was leading the Democratic presidential nomination in 2003, yet he failed to win a single primary.”

I just watched a Fox interview and the person interviewing kept interrupting Ron Paul. I thought only O’Reilly was this rude. Then he tried to marginalize him as a Libertarian, but, of course, Ron Paul had the perfect answer. “I’m a Constitutionalist and the Constitution is for liberty.”

Then they keep repeating the refrain that he is a long shot etc. What a pity these Fox people failed their UPS admission tests. They’d be much better delivering parcels. Then he tried to corner Paul on Pakistan, revealing his ignorance again about how smart Paul is on foreign policy.

Why don’t they parade some of the other candidates and test their record on fund raising, attendances at rallies, internet traffic, meet up groups, etc. What they are trying to say is grassroots activism amounts to nothing. Let apathy rule.

Ron Paul rocks, says this old dog, who doesn’t know the term computer savvy or understands the internet. I’m just a regular Republican with deep respect for the Constitution and great admiration for Dr. Paul.

Mr. Paul,
If you have not noticed yet, YOU are the peoples choice! You are the only politician that true Americans trust now. You have stood your ground and voted your conscience despite the jeers of both parties. Please don’t hesitate to push for the oval office. We want YOU in it. We need a true American to once again stand up for American values and the American people. We want a clean house and we believe you are the only chance we have left of getting one. Good luck and feel free to call on us any time. Sincerely, W. J. Walters, “Overthehillcarpeople.com”

Hopefully after the next debate, Sean Hannity won’t be complaining that we are spamming the polls.

Awe shucks, that will never happen!

Thank you for the nice article on Rep. Paul

Thank you Carl for a great post on Dr. Paul and his successful day. I hope this is a sign for things to come, and hope it will continue to make the Republican debates entertaining for all to watch! How about a tag for “Ron Paul” though on your tag list?

Thanks for covering this story. I’d like to see more stories like this from FOX news. Ron Paul is where the Republican party is headed.

While the grass roots thing is impressive, I am one out of 16 who will not vote for this man because “He knows so much that just isn’t true”
Go Fred Thompson !

Comment by Mike48723

Thanks Carl !! This is the fairest comment from Fox of the entire election run actually letting Dr. Paul speak and then printing what he says. A far cry from Hannity and Colmes’ accusitory lies that Paul supporters are “repeatedly calling in votes to sway the results” of the Fox Post-debate Poll. Yet the news of Paul breaking Romney’s one day record by over a million doesn’t show up in the headlines. I’m sure that if Mitt raises 5 million in a day and breaks Paul’s record. that’s exactly where it will be.

In prinicipal, Ron Paul is attractive, but in practice, he’s dangerous. He has done well identifying so many of the serious problems for this country: the weak dollar, nation building, etc. However, his solutions to some of these problems are narrow minded, and potentially threatening to our country. Not to mention the fact that he will never get elected if he can’t settle down and speak calmly. In every debate so far he got so worked up that I just kept thinking that he could never handle the pressure of being the president. True or not, that will be most of America’s impression to, because the media will slaughter him.

Go Fred Go!

Carl – Thank you for being one of the few “fair and balanced”.

People are listening. This message is not new. Its 200 years old. It’s the message of freedom….of liberty….it’s the message of our founding fathers. Go Ron Paul. Welcome to our Revolution.

Comment by Isaac Baldwin

LOL… we even get a Fred Thompson supporter here to bad mouth him and his success when Fred can’t even begin to duplicate it without some corporate sponsor and has no real answers for any of the problems we face… about time Fox News did something positive about Ron Paul instead of their usual smear pieces… GO RON GO!!!

Comment by William Whatley

I am not a libertarian but Ron Paul is the closest thing to a President we can get at this time who is not owned and operated by the Banks or the two parties. He will not win just as the powers behind the scenes made sure George Wallace, Ross Perot, and Pat Buchanan would not get close to the office!

great article, when are Republicans going to wake up and stop the hijacking of the party. Vote for a true Reagan Republican… Ron Paul

Google Ron Paul and see what he is all about, you might find something scary… that Ron Paul is the only true conservative Republican in the race.

Thanks for your fair and balanced reporting Carl, however I think that the fortune telling media may yet witness another “miracle” from the messiah of liberty as he continues raking in support and donations. Although many pundits pretend to know what they’re talking about many seem to be out of touch and claiming us, common folk, who are supporting Ron Paul are really fringe fanatics. I think it’s undeniable that perhaps some support was garnered by those who many may consider “fringe” or “extreme” but it is undeniable that his support is no longer coming from people in trailers with tin foil hats. It’s middle class America who is sick of paying into a broken system, would you keep on depositing money into a bank that didn’t give you a dollar for a dollar? No, you’d go to a different bank…
I think America agrees it is time to send an American to the white house, not some socialite.

Maybe Hannity will stop carrying water for a left winger like Rudy Julie Annie and stop doing his best “Old Media” impersonation in trying to tear down all the true Conservatives who support the true Conservative: Ron Paul.

Ron Paul IS the people’s choice and it’s because he’s the only one speaking the truth, not tied to special interest groups. Everyone I’ve met that have done their homework on him–not getting their info on him from just media/ pundits, but really researching him–all end up supporting him. Including myself… I was a Mitt Romney supporter, but after months of research on ALL the candidates, I will now only vote for Ron Paul!!

Fox news is trying to get Ron Paul out of the debates using the 5% rule. Please email and call Fox News, The Iowa GOP, and The Des Moines Register. I’m sure they will have Frank Luntz do the polling, as he always gets his desired results.

Republican Party of Iowa: To host presidential debate in Des Moines
11/6/2007

Contact: Mary Tiffany
(515) 282-8105

Debate to be nationally televised by FOX NEWS CHANNEL

The Republican Party of Iowa announced today that it will hold its presidential debate at Hy-Vee Hall in downtown Des Moines. The event, to be held the evening of December 4, 2007, will be the first debate in Iowa to be televised by FOX News Channel this election season, as well as the first debate sponsored by the Republican Party of Iowa.

Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Ray Hoffmann said, “With the caucuses less than a month away, our December 4 debate will be very telling to Iowans and the nation. We are thrilled to be having this event in central Iowa, and right in downtown Des Moines which will be the epicenter on caucus night.”

The debate will be limited to those candidates who have satisfied the following criteria:

1. Announced a formal campaign for President: and

2. Filed the necessary paperwork with the Federal Election Commission; and

3. Met all U.S. constitutional requirements; and

4. Garnered at least 5% of the national electorate as determined by an average of the most recent national telephone polls of registered voters conducted by non-partisan public opinion polling organizations leading up to the registration deadline as determined by Fox News Channel and the Republican Party of Iowa or garnered an average of at least 5% in the most recent polls of Iowa voters conducted by the American Research Group and the Des Moines Register.

Ron Paul has my vote and my donations. I am very happy to say that I donated money to his campaign on November 5th and I will triple my contribution on December 16th. Let’s make history and return our government to the people.

Comment by Russ Mollot

I am so sick of the media and the same old, tired political parties telling me what the issues are. When I read about Ron Paul, I realized that here — finally — is a candidate who represents what I care about: individual rights and freedom; a sound, constitutional dollar; and an end to an oppressive, all-powerful, government that sticks its big nose into every aspect of our lives. By reducing the scope and size of our federal government and its ambitions to be the police force of the world, Ron Paul will bring the national budget back into surplus so that we can actually afford to pay off our huge national debt. I believe in Ron Paul because of his proven track record in his ten congressional terms. He is a truly a man of principle and will not be influenced by any lobby, but will continue to fight for the values of our revolutionary Founding Fathers as written in our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Comment by Melvin Nieuwsma

I agree that Ron Paul is the best of all the canidates and truly a great american. He is the only one who will help bring our nation back to the consitution and return to the great U. S. that we were before. With freedom and justice for all. Where God is the acknowleded sustainer of our liberty and justice.
