The Obama Spinmeister
Did Hillary Clinton get a pass from CNN? None of the debate’s moderators asked a question about “plant-gate” and, according to the Obama camp, they let her off easy when she reversed positions on drivers licenses for illegal immigrants.
Here is Obama senior advisor David Axelrod’s take when asked if Senator Clinton got the tough questions:
doneHe was, of course, talking about the debate’s final question of the night to Clinton – pearls or diamonds?
After the previous Democratic debate, the Obama camp benefited from Clinton’s fumbling of the driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants. Tonight, Senator Obama walked a thin line when asked about the same issue.
“Do you support or oppose driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants?” CNN moderator Wolf Blizter asked Obama. “I am not proposing that that’s what we do,” Obama answered ambiguously.
Here’s the spin on that from the Obama camp:

When re-asked by Blitzer if he supported licenses for illegals, Obama replied a more direct, “yes.”

No one asked about “Plantgate” as you republicans call it because it is a NON ISSUE! We wanted to hear them debate about the issues that really matter in the world today like Iran, Social Security, Immigration, Health Care. All these topics were covered in this debate. My hats go off to the people of Nevada for booing when the candidates attempted to mudsling like the republicans love to do. Plantgate is just another silly republican attempt to divert attention from the real issues!
I have to agree with the previous comment.
“Plant-gate”???? I can hardly type it without feeling embarassed for whomever came up with that moniker.
Part of the reason I believe Edwards has lost his lead in Iowa is because, after he lost his lead, he decided that “policy contrasts” with the other candidates included claiming that the other candidates are unelectable.
As far as Fox’s own polling indicates, the main issues for the voters are IRAQ, HEALTHCARE, and JOBS. Not a single “plant-gate” on the list.
There is, of course, a correct answer to the license question. In my humble opinion non of the candidates have even come close to it. It’s amazing that at least the Democrats are not smart enough to find a way out of a direct answer. That may well be hard for a Republican, they may find themselves looking for something as simple as a direct answer. But for a Democrat it would seem simple.
Being from Massachusetts may have prepared me to think this way. I believe that the correct answer should go something like this. “I believe that as long as the Federal government allows a STATE drivers license to be used as if it were a secure identification method, (for airline travel and such) I can not in favor of having state drivers licenses that are issued to improperly, or undocumented inhabitants of the USA.”
I suppose that would also include ANYONE with falsely obtained drivers licenses; which makes great sense to me.
The followup answer is fairly easy. Once again the candidates may wish to punt the problem right back to the Federal government not performing its job properly. Of course even the rejected immigration bill had no method for proper FEDERAL documentation with regard to things like National airline travel and such.
Yes we should try to identify all improperly documented people in the US. How sure can we be they will show up for ANY id that would show the truth? San Francisco has a proposed one that won’t show their address on their new ID solution? Doesnt that make the whole ID seem illogical?
The questions were planted, the audience was planted, the moderator was planted. This was NOT a debate. It had more in common with Stalin-era show trials, and the verdict was in before it began: Hillary!’s the bestest thing in the WORLD!! It was disgusting.
… are the first and second comments suggesting that the “diamonds or pearls” issue covered in the debate are “the issues that really matter in the world today?”
