Smarter Than the Average Bear
Santa Monica, CA-
So I had about 30 minutes to kill after Hillary Clinton, and John Edwards spoke at the global warming presidential referendum in West L.A,so I decided to check out the Santa Monica pier which I was told was relatively close, and something I have always wanted to see. While being essentially underwhelmed by the famed pier, I ran into a fringe candidate right smack in the middle of the pier, close to the ferris wheel. No it wasn’t Mike Gravel,or John Cox but Teddy Mather. Who is Teddy Mather you ask? I didn’t know either. He didn’t say much either, or at least, I didn’t hear anything through the bear costume, but a staffer filled me in.Apparently, Mather is a member of the National Parks Conservation Association and yes, runs on one issue: the protection of American national parks.Check out the bear essentials of this story(sorry, I’m lame , I know):
Here is his website @ The National Parks Conservation Association : Teddy
No one presidential candidate has yet made national parks a national priority. So the National Parks Conservation Association has found a candidate who can! He may be just a humble bear, but Teddy Mather is making his campaign about our national parks, and the plants, the animals, and the historic buildings in them. Our national parks protect some of America’s most significant landmarks and landscapes. They tell our nation’s stories. Yet they suffer from a lack of funding and critical protection.
Our National Park System, called the best idea America ever had, will celebrate its centennial in 2016, another presidential election year. If a president is going to restore America’s National Park System in time for the centennial, we need to begin the work now.
Teddy is the bear for the job. Help elect Teddy Mather, and help protect our national heritage.
Teddy will be in Washington DC next, and according to his campaign, at pit stops all over the 2008 Trail.

The Bear candidate has about 1000% better chance of winning the nomination (any nomination) than fringe candidate John Cox, who basically conceded defeat at the Reagan Dinner in Des Moines a couple of weeks ago, closed his offices in New Hampshire and Iowa, and fired the few staffers who remained (among the many who have fled in horror or slipped away in shame!)
I know, I know. I think we’re all devastated. I’m sure he is bitter, angry and even enraged that his antics weren’t posted on the front page of the New York Times, or didn’t lead the news on Fox News that night.
Love it! Spend lots of time in our national parks each year — and Teddy is right we haven’t heard from the candidates on this issue. Nationa Parks are important reminders of who we are as a nation — from the Statue of Liberty to Valley Forge and Martin Luther King’s home — as well as incredible places of beauty. They deserve more attention!!!!!!
Finally! A candidate I can bear to listen to! Election-wide pressure should be brought to bear on the lack of support toward these symbols of our shared heritage. Teddy is coming out of the electoral gates, loaded for bear, ready to take on the challenge of making our national parks a national priority! Bear in mind, Teddy isn’t on the ballot (yet). Unless we find a candidate the people AND parks can support, we’ll all grin and bear it in the end.
Bear up! Vote Teddy in 2008!
