Giuliani condemns anti-Mormon push polling

Homestead, FL — Declaring that “there is no religious test for office,” Rudy Giuliani today condemned anti-Mormon phone calls currently taking place primary states that question the faith of rival Mitt Romney.

“To raise anyone’s religion is wrong. It’s un-American. It’s not the right thing to do…whoever is doing it should stop it,” Giuliani declared during an appearance today at the NASCAR race he attended today in Homestead. “There is no religious test for office in this country. It is one of the reasons this country was founded.”

The phone calls, referred to as push-polling, first reported last week by Jonathan Martin of Politico, are taking place in the key primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. While the calls begin as a regular poll, asking prospective voters for their views of the candidates, they quickly turn negative–and include extensive discussion and questions about Mormonism’s teachings.

Giuliani, a Catholic, said he believes the country overcame any issues it had with a candidate’s religion with the election of fellow Catholic, John F. Kennedy, who won despite fears in some circles he would take orders from the Vatican. Nearly 50 years later, Romney is facing many questions and doubts about Mormonism and it’s unique traditions.

“I thought we got that all behind us in 1960–with President Kennedy…it is wrong to raise his religion. It would be wrong to raise my religion or someone else’s religion,” Giuliani said. “We were founded to be a place of religious liberty, religious freedom…America should not have a religious test for office. Anyone raising it doesn’t understand what America is about.”

One Response to “Giuliani condemns anti-Mormon push polling”

Mormons, or members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are infact Christians. Mormons, accept the salvation of Jesus Christ. The Mormon church serves countries and people in need. Is this not Christian? Anti-Mormon’s love to take things out of context.
