Obama Discusses His “Goof-Off” High School Days to New Hampshire High School Students
After delivering a speech on his education policy at Manchester’s Central High School, Obama dropped by a study hall class on his way out to say hi to students and take a couple questions. His staff made sure the slew of reporters following the candidate on his bus tour through the Granite State were on hand to watch the candidate address the class. For the most part, the students had intelligent questions about issues like No Child Left Behind and his first objective as president.
It wasn’t until Principal John Rist asked the senator to “give us a human side” when things got interesting.
Obama candidly talked about experimenting with drugs, drinking, and thinking about girls when he was a high school student in Hawaii – all subjects he’s admitted to and written about in his book, “Dreams of my Father,” but topics he doesn’t talk about often in front of cameras.
Take a look:

Romney is right. We don’t need successful public figures saying they did drugs in their youth, so young people today can rationalize, that if he did it and it didn’t hurt him, them I can do it too.
I’ve never seen him ramble on so much before. He just seemed uncomfortable and at a loss for words when asked to mention which subjects he liked, what organizations he was involved in, and what he did with his buddies. Did he really even answer any of those?
Seems like he was fishing to make this “confession”…watch the woman in the background when he mentions drinking and drug use…she turns and looks to the principal. odd speech barack.
Barack Hussein Obama, a dull liberal Marxist wet towel ‘poster child’ for social programs. A proclaimed ‘clean’ black person with a Robin Hood persona that has to take care of and coddle the ‘dirties’ by giving them a warm bottle filled with white peoples money. My hero. His recent ancestors come from an impoverished nonwhite country so he is less corrupted by America. And talk about credibility…he doesn’t come from the hood but better yet his family is from a third world country, wow…and Jon Edwards thought he had it made for having an impoverished and ignorant dad. Jackpot! His only weaknesses are that he is not gay and he doesn’t have aids. Not only can he be identified with a nonAmerican darker-than-white skinned country, but, he also went to not a Christian school, but a Muslim school when he grew up! Man, it just doesn’t get any better than this guy. Here is the Left’s latest messiah. There is a strong chance that Barack Hussein Obama might even out-Jesus the other black president, impeached for lying under oath (about sex), Bill Clinton. Barack Hussein Obama is a perfect trojan horse for the other-white power structure that is backing him. How can you say a word against Barack Hussein Obama? He is black, his family recently hails from a third world country, so they are darker-than-white skinned immigrants, and he supports programs that takes money from evil whites and redistributes it to oppressed minorities. With all this going for him it’s easy to overlook the fact that he’s not gay and doesn’t have aids.
I completely agree with the above comment. You’d expect Barak to connect with people a little bit better than that. I love how he eventually ties everything into how he became more politically aware in college and how he often contemplated the worlds problems. The worst is how he refers to his book, cause that basically made everything seem rehearsed ahead of time. It doesn’t really seem like this guy knows kids very well.
Man, it’s worse watching it than it was reading about it. His answer had very little to do with the question. He didn’t have to say any of that. Does he think those kids have read his book? Was he intimidated by a question from the principal? He sounded totally lame. All he had to say was something like “I goofed off in high school and got into a little trouble, which I now regret because I wasted time and hurt my mother.” My Gawd, this guy is not ready for prime time! He didn’t even say he regretted the drinking and drugs, only the lack of studying! Idiot!
Sorry Dad. I strongly disagree. The Senator made it clear that what he did was a mistake that cost him (“I wasted a lot of time”, etc.), and why. That was an important teaching moment. I suspect some of the kids listening will learn from that and maybe not make mistakes they would have otherwise made. Also, for the most part, kids are already well aware of the drug plague facing our country and will not do this just because a public figure ‘fesses up.
In the end, most will do whatever they would do anyway, whether they heard the Senator or not.
We don’t need Presidential candidates who are ex drug users. There are plenty of intelligent, educated people in this country whose brains haven’t been fried on drugs, to run for the nation’s highest office. What a total embarrassment !!! I thought Obama’s remarks were deplorable. If I had been a student at the school I would have complained and been very disappointed.
I met Barack on Sat Nov 17th in Austin,Tx. He definately does better with big crowds and adults, but I think he wa trying to humanize himself by telling the HIGH SCHOOLERS who have probably done more coke and weed than he has ever seen, that he was a man who has made mistakes, and those mistakes don’t have to cost you your life or your future. Jesus Carolyn, do you want to damn everyone their future if they screwed up in high school?? Where would that leave you, unless you were one of those weird kids that noone, including me, (now an attorney, HA) would ever speak to. I hope America will welcome the honesty of our presidential candidates, ionstead of the “I never inhales” or Bush’s famous, just barey the documents.
Wasn’t Bush drunk until he was 40? Talk about a burn-out. (Not to mention the coke.)
At least Barack gave it up at 18.
So the lesson here is: You can drink until you are 40, find religion, and become a Repub president. But you can’t experiment in high school, give it up in college, and become a Democratic president.
It is all clear now.
I was in the classroom that he spoke at in Manchester. Some of you are saying that we must have been very disappointed that he mentions drug use. Well those of you that think that are wrong. Who do you want in office? A person that lies thier way to getting your vote, or somebody honest and will admit that he got into trouble as a kid. Carolyn, you say that we dont need an ex-drug user in the white house because it has obviously had an impact on him mentally. Well how could he be so messed up if he is a Untied States Senator. His comment isn’t encouraging people to do drugs, and how would anyone who says otherwise say that? Do you do drugs? How would you know what a drugie or drunk got out of his comments? I am a member of student council and I talked with other people in the room after he left. Honeslty, everyone was glad he told the truth but nobody was even thinking that it would be this big a deal! When he said that he was a trouble maker in high school, I thought the world already knew that, he had already said this in a speech at the begining of the year. His message in the speech was “don’t screw up like he did.” It wasnt encouraging people to do drugs! I was quoted in “The Daily News” and I was said that there are people who might use drugs that dont feel as if they will get far in life, but the senator’s comments might have given those people a different outlook on life and thier actions, so they know that they can still fix thier mistakes. Don’t criticize Obama just because you see other candidates doing it, they are just trying to take your vote!
Yes, go ahead and tell kids you did drugs so they can say, I will do drugs so I can grow up and become a Presidential Candidate. Stoopid!
yes because every parent says that
Totally calculated move on the Senator’s part to use this venue in this manner. You could see it
in his pacing, prior to his beginning to speak. Like its going thru his mind, “how will I weave this in?”.
