“You’d be real embarrassed” if Obama Won and You Supported “That White Lady”

Senator Barack Obama held a fundraiser/rally at the Apollo Theater in Harlem Thursday night after spending a day fundraising in Manhattan.

The crowd gathered at the Apollo early, and was treated to a long warm-up act prior to the Senator’s speech while he and Reverend Al Sharpton dined in Harlem’s famous soul food restaurant, Sylvia’s. While the capacity crowd waited, they heard a Harlem-based choir, a fiddler/violinist (this reporter doesn’t know the difference), local politicians, a preacher, and author Dr. Cornel West.

It was a long pre-show, to be sure, and when West concluded his animated remarks with, “I don’t want to go on too long; you didn’t come here to hear me run my mouth,” the crowd laughed appreciatively. He then added, “But I do want to introduce you all to somebody just before brother Barack Obama.” The crowd turned quickly and booed the author. Until, that is, he announced it was none other than comedian Chris Rock.

Rock, never one to shy away from blunt language, told the crowd that he was glad to see the crowd “on the right side of history.” Because, he said, “You’d be real embarrassed if he won and you wasn’t down with it. ‘I can’t call him now! I had that white lady. What was I thinking? What was I thinking,” he joked, referring to Obama’s main rival for the Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton.
Here are his opening remarks:

Why are they showing Chris Rock instead of Barack Obama, again?

This is why we cannot put Obama in the white house. Racial remarks like the one Chris said in front of hundred of african americans. I am hispanic and you don’t see me running to see Richards. This campaign has gone racial and it is due to Obama’s people. Being black seems to be glorified by Obama, why doesn’t he glorified his muslims roots too?

Comment by Geminess

Well…there’s nothing like speaking TRUTH…even in allegorical terms.

Comment by rightismight

And why does the media bust Hillary on using gender issues? Obama has pandered to black evangelicals by speaking in patois when in the south- Hillary took a line out of gospel hymn and repeated it verbatim and was crucified-Now she’s being called the “white lady” How about some fair press reporting? This is a good start-see who picks it up-

It’s just funny how on one side of the race issue, we have someone such as Don Imus defamed for freedom of speech using derogatory comments, and we have chris rock at a Barak Obama fundraiser with Al Sharpton (who blew the Don Imus situation to what it was) welcoming comments in reference to race.If this was a Clinton fundraiser, and you had Jerry Sienfeld making a comment about “That Black Guy” in reference to Obama, this would have been a serious blow to the clinton campaign

Wow, this is great!

Chris Rock is ALWAYS funny…I laughed so hard.

Comment by Laura Berman

It dismays me to see the Obama campaign using the race card more and more. The message I
get from his campaign is that if you are black, you must vote for Obama. I think that to refer to
Hillary Clinton as that “white lady” is racist.

Hilarious – I can only hope Ellen DeGeneres does a similar bit on Hillary’s behalf to make sure women don’t cast their votes for “that black guy” Obama.

No I wouldn’t, I don’t like Obama. i’ve seen a lot of blogs about him and some of the stuff he’s done is outrageous. So I wouldn’t be embarrased, i’d be annoyed. Check out my blog at http://www.extrapreneur.wordpress.com

That white lady. Hmmm. That’s just about the best way to describe her given his audience. Chris should remember with chagrin that it was he who called Bill the first Black president. Yeah, who never did a damn thing for Blacks but could always count on Black votes with his Black preacher charisma. Finally, Blacks are open to seeing the Clintons as users. Many Blacks would argue how Clinton appointed Blacks as Secretary of Commerce, Energy, Labor, and Agriculture and appointed Jocelyn Elders at Surgeon General, but not one of those posts (or all of them for that matter) add up to one of the five REAL cabinet posts: State, Defense, Treasury, AG, National Security Advisor. If anyone should have given a Black a real Cabinet position it should have been Bill Clinton. Instead, we had to wait for a white conservative Republican to elevate a Black to a top job. The Clintons have used Blacks long enough. “That white lady”. I love it.

Chris Rock, it seems to me, is making up jokes as they come to his head. It’s as if he doesn’t really believe what he’s saying . . .as the crowd responds he lays out another thought, then another. He is paid to make people laugh. He made people laugh. Poor taste, but they laughed and he got paid.

Comment by Michelle

How is Obama to be blamed for what Chris Rock said? And why are you surprised about Chris Rock’s comments? Chris been doing funny racial jokes for like forever. Why u all trippin’, he said “white lady”, he didn’t say “cracker” or “cracker ho”. Imus said “nappy headed hos”. Huge difference, I am more offended by the “ho” remark, but not by the other, because I am a natty dread. Him say “black” and “white”, not “nigga” and “cracker”.

Most blacks do not want to vote for Obama because they feel that if he wins somebody will kill him before he gets to the whitehouse. They also feel like he doesn’t have enough experience (bush didn’t) like Hillary even though she got hers through Bill.

You people are such hypocrits, why didn’t you explore his comment about Bush using Katrina water to put out California fires. Help the rich/Whites in Cali and to hell with poor/Blacks in Louis. I am sure you thought that part was funny… hahahaha lmao at all you hypocrits

Comment by KSH

Comparing Chris’s comment to Imus is comical! It’s not like he called her a “oily headed ho” he said “that white lady” he didn’t call her “that cracka lady”; but he he was funny and besides he doesn’t work for Obama so get over it! It was funny. And what Imus does not matter to me he can say what he wants. I beleive in freedom of speech. Imus is an asshole to some just like Chris Rock is but I am not in the business of trying to censor anyone!

I see Many comment here about Chris Rock’s “That Wgite Lady” comment. But if i must say most of Chris Rocks routine is based on Black and White. Also if Obama was to glorify his Muslim roots he would not stand a chance at getting on the ballot let alone elected. Ms Beaz Must thinks she’s White Like most Hispanics.

I hope that Hillary had more style and class than to engage in a campaign based on gender or race.

This is like so funny…Look at all the Obama haters trying to find some thing to say.

Why can’t we all just get along bamahaters.

Comment by rogadelic

Chris Rock is some sort of genius, and I think people who think this was outright racism may be missing his subtlety. He’s nobody’s fool. Telling a black audience that they’ll be embarrassed if Obama wins and they had voted for the “white lady” is a joke layered with irony; he’s simultaneously saying “Vote for Obama because he’s black and understands you” and saying “It’s kind of absurd for anyone to think you can’t vote for Hillary because she’s white.” African-Americans know damned well who Hillary Clinton is — she’s not some “white lady” to them — and Rock knows this. The joke gently spoofs folksy racial solidarity (Rock the subversive comedian) while also invoking it (Rock the black icon at a political event). He did his job. The reason whites and blacks alike love his race jokes is that he consistently turns the prejudices, stereotypes and assumptions of both groups inside out, in a way that makes everyone feel more comfortable, and also somehow gets closer to the heart of things.

Comment by mac2008

C’mon, some people here lost some sense of humor. Chris spoke directly to his folks–namely black people. He is quite relaxed and funny. I don’t see any needs to overanalyze his remark to become a racial issue.

Comment by Denise Brooks

Obama has NO “muslim roots.” That story is based on rumors and lies. Too bad our venerable MSM just reprints this sludge and people just lap it up.

Comment by joe vegas

please people lighten up, he says this kind of stuff avery day he is a comedian period .by the way why shouldnt obama go to black people and ask team to vote for him he is one of them, its just like bush going to texas one would expect him to say hey i know your problems i am one of you guys.if we want african americans to have role models how are they going to have one if all we do is condamn . the lady who is hispanic offcourse bill richardson speaks spainish in front of spainish people , is nt that a way of saying i am one of you???? they is nothing racist here people move on . get a life.how many white candidates have we seen telling as that they are irish and yet blacks voted for them? was that a race card. grow up.

Comment by Alek (askiba)

rogadelic has a strong point. Instead of bashing this is a racist article, find out the facts and get a feel for Rock’s comedy.

A note for Jaki …

- “This is why we cannot put Obama in the white house. Racial remarks like the one Chris said in front of hundred of african americans.

Seriously? Not so much that I’m wondering what you missed. Rather, I can’t figure out what I missed. Really? It’s Chris freakin’ Rock. Look, just because Al Gore doing the Macarena is the funniest a white Democrat can come up with doesn’t mean we ought to hang Obama because of Chris Rock. How racist should we get, here? Should I recall a friend of mine, who happens to be black, who supported Obama at the outset but is wavering? Why should his support waver? Because he doesn’t like the platform Obama’s putting together. I share his sentiment, and it’s not hard to figure out. The catfight with Hillary over Pakistan? Hanging out with the ex-gay (not-so-ex) bigot black preacher? Playing a bogus Social Security card? Two of the three show his inexperience. That middle one, though, just infuriates me. And my friend, who happens to be black. If you really have to reduce your opposition to Obama to Chris Rock’s introduction and the Muslim portion of his heritage, I dare suggest you’re too blinded by cultural prejudice to notice the substantial questions about this campaign. Is it because he’s black that you can’t treat him like an intelligent candidate who’s simply blowing the race, or is it because he’s not non-Muslim enough for you?

Chris Rock is hilarious. Period.

Comment by iceman

Lighten up people, that was some funny stuff. I liked the part about Bush putting out the California fires with Katrina water and I voted for Bush

Comment by Austin

He is blowing the race by having Oprah and Rock on the trail. My goodness gracious, he’s using stars instead of experience to get the race won. The whole time I watched the video I thought, note this date and time, this is where Obama lost.

There is a time and a place for Chris Rock, this was neither the time nor the place.

There is nothing funny about Chris Rock, unless you see smartass as funny, I don’t. Obama has used race contantly in his campaign, I do not see that as a plus but rather a bad mistake. He proves with everyday he will stoop to any level to gain votes, not realizing he leaves himself wide open to honest deserved criticism. His insensitivy to the gay issue alone is enough to disqualify him for the presidency, we don’t need another president with a Republican attitude on gay rights. We need someone that will stand up for everyone not a few, we need a someone with honest experience, not just a desire to be president…………………..We don’t need Obama.

Comment by jonolan

Folks, Obama is Black. He was campaigning to Blacks. He hired a comic that he thought Blacks would like. He also said things that Blacks would be expected to want to hear. So what? I’m White and I would have done the same things and said the same things while standing in the Apollo! You don’t get the Black vote except be telling them what they want to hear.

Comment by drdread

I think this is just distracting us from focusing more on the big picture: why so many people, (blacks and whites, young and old) are giving their strong support to Obama. I’m guessing many feel their votes and voices were not heard in past elections (especially those in Florida and Ohio), and Obama is willing to listen to their concerns and address their needs. It seems that some people can relate better to him than “that white lady” or “those rich old white guys” and they are showing their support with $5, $10, $20 donations. Small potatoes to some, but it’s really adding up. I also don’t think we should make too much about the “star” power coming out in his support. Afterall, there are several Republican “stars” in politics, past (Pres. Reagan), present (Gov. Schwarzenegger) and future (Fred Thompson). And, remember this was a mostly black audience, and this really is a history making election. Imagine 30 years from now, your grandchild is writing a history paper and asks if you voted for the first African American president, and you have to tell the child why or why not. That’s the point he’s making, of course with typical Chris Rock humor.

Comment by Amanda B

I admit that I am always a bit disheartened to hear the race or gender card pulled in the campaigns. I think we should vote for whoever is most suited to the job, with no regard to those factors.

However, I also think it’s a bit silly to get too upset over Chris Rock’s opening comments. He is, after all, Chris Rock, and racial (not racIST, but racIAL) jokes are a staple in his routines. And I don’t find the term “white lady” to be particularly offensive. People have called each other a lot more scathing things on TV before. Hillary is, in fact, white, and “lady” is, for the most part, a pretty respectful term for women.

I agree that it’s wrong to make the presidential elections an issue of race, but it’s unrealistic to expct anything else but that Chris Rock will say things in line with his trademark humor.

this whole “racial thing” is retarded… he just said that white lady and if u don’t like chris rock’s comedy..then why did u watch it??

Bill Clinton was the best president ever and i’m black…i was only 6 when he was president and i would always tell my mom how he loves black people.

**Violins**

Let me start off saying I am an African American Muslim,
and there are things I’d like you all to understand…Cris Rock is a comedian and where was the outrage from his debut to his present stand up routines?

so while you are away let me remind you this:

1) $275 million per day
$4,100 per household
Almost 4,000 U.S. soldiers killed and more than 60,000 wounded
700,000 Iraqis killed and 4 million refugees

2) U.S. Health Care Is Bad For Your Health and nearly 50 million pissed off people AND CHILDREN are with out health care.

3) Oh and the Illegal Alien thing? LOL If you want to stop that then REMOVE THIS FROM THE STATUE OF LIBERTY!

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” – Engrved on Statue of Liberty” So I guess it comes to us tearing down that part.

4) Americans need to study their own government more because it’s a damn shame when a Holocaust survivor says this “I’m going back because I’ve seen this before.” He then commenced to explain that when he was a kid, he watched with his family in fear as Hitler’s government committed atrocity after atrocity, and no one was willing to say anything. He said the news refused to question the government, and the ones who did were not in the newspaper business much longer. He said good neighbors, people he had known all his life, turned against his family and other Jews, grabbing on to the hate and superiority “as if they were starved for it” (his words).

He said he was too old to see it happen right in front of his eyes again, and too old to do anything about it, so he was taking his family back to Europe on Thursday where they would be safe from George W. Bush and his neocons. He seemed resolute, but troubled, nonetheless, as if being too young on one end and too old on the other to fight what he saw happening was wearing on him.

5) after seeing this:

I think my Jewish friend might have the right Idea for leaving….being black and muslim my self I wouldnt stand a chance.

6) As the dollar goes into free fall and the housing market accelerates in sales yet plunges in price, the quickening of an agenda of economic catastrophe…

This is crazy that anybody is even thinking about electing this guy whether he is black white or yellow
he has no experience this isnt a job where you learn as you go for gods sake.

Comment by TB

The comment was not that offensive.

But it is irritating that so many people are going to vote on a candidate, based solely on the fact that Obama is black and Hilary is female. It’s sad really. I mean you should vote on the person based on the experience, the issues and what they can do for the country. Race, gender, and such shouldn’t matter.

-_-

First… “You People” (you put in whatever you want there… White, Black, Red, Repub, Dem)
Are just so darn uptight… In case you did not know it. Hillary is a White Lady!

If the cops asked someone to describe Hillary do you think they would say She is a female that has pinkish skin?

Hillary has called Obama a young black man… so what’s the big deal… She is a white lady…
He did not call her a cow or a Nazi like that “white guy” named Rush Dimbaugh… and his many
wannabe Rush radio copy cats…

Rush calls Obama a blackman all the time… I’m sure if he could get a way with Boy or N#gger
he would have said that… Right? NO! Race is not an issue…

THis is how people talk…

Chris is funny… he is smart and he is telling the truth… If this kinda of talk makes you not like Obama then wow… you have other issues… Obama is not your guy

Comment by Amanda

Just in case you all forgot Obama is black and white. Not just black. He was born to a white mother and a black father. Does that make him only black? I think not!
