Romney Decides to give “Mormon Speech”
Governor Romney will give a speech on religion this Thursday in College Station, Texas at the George H.W. Bush Library. The speech will focus on his Mormon religion and he is expected to explain his faith, discuss religious liberty, and most importantly to his campaign, religious tolerance. He will also discuss how his Mormonism will affect his Presidency. The speech titled “Faith In America” has been expected for some time now, but it is hard to overlook the fact that Mike Huckabee has inched ahead of Romney in some polls. There is great division in the Romney camp over delivering this speech. One faction has been against it from the beginning and remains so. It is also hard to overlook the fact that Huckabee is an ordained Evangelical Baptist minister. In South Carolina particularly, Southern Baptists consider Mormonism a cult.
In last weeks’ debate Romney stammered a bit when asked whether he believes every word in the Bible. Mr Romney has often said there are aspects of his faith that to some might seem strange.
The campaign just announced moments ago that Romney will give the much talked about “Mormon speech” and released this statement from the campaign spokesman, Kevin Madden:
“Governor Romney understands that faith is an important issue to many Americans, and he personally feels this moment is the right moment for him to share his views with the nation.”
Romney would like this to be today’s equivalent of John F. Kennedy’s speech on Catholicism during the 1960 campaign. Romney has said he can never fill Kennedy’s shoes, but the campaign knows if the speech goes well this could make Romney’s candidacy. A positive comparison to JFK could help Romney.
The campaign has said that the Governor made the decision to give the speech last week and although he is delivering it at the George H.W. Bush presidential library it is not an endorsement by the former President.
At an informal lunch yesterday Romney told the travelling press, all stuck together during an ice storm, he was re-reading Jon Meachem’s “American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers, and the Making of a Nation.” A possible hint to the press about his intentions.

I hope Mitt will clearly communicate how the gift of faith in Christ is in full concert /accord with the
Mormon bible verses the King James Bible.
The primary question that Mitt needs to bring full clarity to everyone’s understanding is: Does the King James Bible remain the only full and complete WORD OF GOD?
..or ….
Does the Mormon bible take priority over the King James Bible as the WORD OF GOD?
It would also be helpful for clarity as to what was the key doctrines that caused Mitt’s wife to
convert from Christianity to Mormonism? What scriptures in the KJ and Mormon texts caused her
to convert to Mormonism?
Hopefully, Mitt’s speech will bring full exposure to how Mormonism fully aligns with Christianity.
I think this kind of speech would be a good thing.
Thanks for this tip. I hope to hear it.
I think this speech would be good. I hope to hear it. Thanks for the link.
I feel saddened that Governor Romney has to publically explain his relegion, after all this is America. However, some will not rest until he does so, therefore, I wish him the best. Perhaps after the speech we can all focus on more important issues.
I am myself a conservative Chrisitan woman with people from many different denominations among my aquiantences. I know several LDS people and find them to be genuine people of integrity. The old idea that Mormonism is a cult is left over from a past century of relegious persecution against the LDS people and needs to be put to rest once and for all. Certain Christian denominations would be more respected if they would treat others more kindly.
Romney can only be elected or put up for election by the Republican Party Officials. So, to force this unwanted candidate upon the people I am sure Party Officials would like for Romney to put on the same show as Kennedy did in the 60s. Unfortunately, these northeastern yankee types always do terrible on social issues. Kennedy divided this country forever and created the special laws we now have for certain groups in this country and Romney will do the same I fear or worse! This country has gone down so much in social areas and otherwise due to our abandonment of the Christian principles which we were founded upon! Romney’s attack on Southern Heritage the other night killed his chances of getting much of a vote out of the Confederate States of America!
