Governor Romney Lawn Care Scandal Continues
This is being sent around by a rival campaign. Looks like Romney might be doing one thing and saying another and his rivals are quick to point it out!
Owner Saenz Said That Romney’s Didn’t Express Reservations About His Hiring Practices To Him. “Romney’s account differs from that of landscape company owner Ricardo Saenz, who said that Romney didn’t press the issue of whether his workers were in the country illegally. Asked if the Romney household expressed reservations about rehiring him after last year’s story, he said, ‘Why would they have any problem?’” (Maria Cramer and Maria Sacchetti and Connie Paige, “More Immigrant Woes For Romney,” The Boston Globe, 12/5/07)
Owner Saenz Said He Never Met With Mitt, Only Ann And A Son. WCVB’s JORGE QUIROGA: “Romney says he gave the company a second chance after the issue surfaced a year ago. He says he personally met with the company to make sure the workers were legal. Ricardo Saenz says has never met the former governor.” RICARDO SAENZ: “Only with the wife and the son.” QUIROGA: “You never dealt with the Governor himself?” SAENZ: “Never with the Governor, no, no.” (WCVB-TV, Boston, 12/4/07)
Owner Saenz Said That No One Asked Him About Legality Of His Workers. “He said he usually spoke about the work with Romney’s wife, Ann, or one of his children, and that no one asked for papers for his workers. ‘What papers, if I’m a company?’ Saenz asked. ‘I don’t understand why they have to verify anything. Their job is not to check up on my company.’” (Maria Cramer and Maria Sacchetti and Connie Paige, “More Immigrant Woes For Romney,” The Boston Globe, 12/5/07)
Two Workers Confirmed To The Globe That They Were Illegal Immigrants. “The two workers confirmed in separate interviews with Globe reporters last week that they were in the country without documents. One said he had paid $7,000 to a smuggler to escort him across the desert into Arizona; the other said he had come into the country with a student visa that has expired. Both were seen working on the lawn by either Globe reporters or photographers over the last two months.” (Maria Cramer and Maria Sacchetti and Connie Paige, “More Immigrant Woes For Romney,” The Boston Globe, 12/5/07)
In 2007, One Worker, An Illegal Guatemalan, Said Owner Saenz Told Him To “Go Get Something” After He Was Told He Didn’t Have Proper Papers. “After the crews’ last visit to Romney’s house last Thursday, Globe reporters followed the pickup truck through the day and back to Saenz’s house in Chelsea. A Globe reporter then followed one of the workers to a nearby bodega, identified herself, and asked him about his work and legal status. Speaking in Spanish, the worker identified himself as Justo Sanan, a 35-year-old father of three from Guatemala, and said he told Saenz as early as March that he did not have legal papers. Saenz then told him to ‘go get something,’ Sanan said.” (Maria Cramer and Maria Sacchetti and Connie Paige, “More Immigrant Woes For Romney,” The Boston Globe, 12/5/07)
*Worker Bought False Green Card And Social Security Number Off The Street. “Sanan then bought a false green card and Social Security number for $80 from a man on the street he never saw again. He showed the papers to Saenz, who he said photocopied and returned them. ‘Since I started I told him I don’t have papers,’ said Sanan, who added that he has since gotten rid of the fake papers.” (Maria Cramer and Maria Sacchetti and Connie Paige, “More Immigrant Woes For Romney,” The Boston Globe, 12/5/07)
In 2007, Second Worker Said He Was In Country Illegally On An Expired Student Visa. “The second worker was approached at a bus stop in Chelsea, after Saenz dropped him off after a day of work on Friday. Also speaking in Spanish, he identified himself as Hamilton Gracias, a 24-year-old from Guatemala who has been in the United States for three years. As a reporter rode the MBTA bus with him, Gracias said he knew nothing about working on Romney’s lawn. But the prior day, he was seen by the Globe on the Romney property hoisting a plastic bin full of leaves from Romney’s tennis courts. ‘Of course,’ he said, when asked if he is here illegally. ‘That’s why I don’t work for companies.’ He said he entered the country with a student visa that has expired. The identities of the two workers could not be verified in public documents.” (Maria Cramer and Maria Sacchetti and Connie Paige, “More Immigrant Woes For Romney,” The Boston Globe, 12/5/07)

Everything I’ve read about this story always said that Mitt’s son had contacted the company, not Mitt. What is the point of this story and how is this a scandal? This is the most ridiculous non-story out there. Those who think Mitt did something wrong, please explain to me what he should have done and how you have ensured that illegals didn’t help build your house, do your lawn care, make your food, clean your hotel room, etc.
How does this even count as reporting? Weak.
So when are we going to start and hang out big business for doing the same thing that Mitt is being accused of? Oh that’s right we aren’t big money does and the everyone turns an eye to it. someone on a personal level and everyone is ready to hang them out to dry. Or is this being made an issue because he is a morman? The last I knew this country was founded on freedom of religion, we all may not agree on others beliefs, but that is what makes america so great we have the choice to believe in what ever or who ever we want. All Presidents have had the freedom to choice on religion so why should mitt and his religion become an issue, It shouldn’t he can make a choice just as well as the other consolidates and ever president has looked towards something may it be a friend adviser or any thing else for the tough decisions.
I agree with Hurlster. This should not be given any significance at all. It looks like another weak attempt to discredit Romney. I am suprised FOX even made it a blog item. I’m liking Romney alot since all FOX and the left wing media have been able to come up with so far as “negatives” are 1. he is Mormon (which isn’t a negative or even relevent), 2. He appointed a judge who made a bad sentencing mistake (It might be relevant if the Judge asked him first befoere she gave the sentance but I doubt she did) and 3. He didn’t check immigration status of workers that were used by a lawn care comapny he hired (Isn’t that the companies responsability?). If Mitt was getting the half the positive airtime (interviews etc) Fox is giving Huckabee and the other candidates, he would be leading the Republican race. Of course Hucakbee is surging in polls, it looks like the tail (media) wagging the dog (Primary race). The best coverage I have seen so far on Mitt was a long segment interview he had with Wolf Blitzer on CNN about a month ago. More balance please FOX, I’d like to see each canidate do a substantial one on one interview segment on FOX so I can make an informed decision.
If I had 5 sons, one of them would be mowing the lawn.
