Huckabee apologizes to Romney

Governor Huckabee just apologized to Governor Romney in response to comments made about Romney’s religion, Mormonism. In this Sunday’s New York Times Magazine, Huckabee asks, “Don’t Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?” Huckabee blamed the reporter for taking it out of context and pressed that he would never make an issue out of Romney’s faith:

“We thought good heavens we were having a conversation over several hours. The conversation was about religion and he was trying to press me on what my thought on Romney’s religion. I said I don’t want to go there. I don’t know much about it. I barely know about being a Baptist. He was telling me things about the Mormon faith and frankly he is very well schooled in comparative religions. As part of the conversation I asked about it. I asked him not to create something. I never thought it would make the story after the debate today. After the debate today I went up to Mitt Romney and apologized to him. I would never pick out some part of your faith and make it an issue.”

Huckabee embed, Serafin Gomez fought through the media horde to shoot the former Arkansas governor explaining his apology. Huckabee went over to Romney after the Iowa Public Television/Des Moines Register debate, the last debate before the Iowa caucuses.

**UPDATE**

The Romney Campaign responds to both the comments Huckabee made initially about Mormonism and also Huckabee’s apology, which Romney accepted.

Per Press Secretary, Eric Fehrnstrom:
“Governor Romney has accepted the apology. He believes that appeals to prejudice have no part in this campaign. While it’s fair to criticize an opponent’s record or policy positions, it’s out of bounds to question a person’s religious beliefs.”

The campaign also responded to the initial comments made by Huckabee.

Per Press Secretary Kevin Madden:
“Governor Romney will not debate candidates on their faith or question their faith. For those who want to know how Governor Romney’s faith informs his values, they can look at how he lives his life and how he has raised his family.”

**UPDATE**

Governor Huckabe e just spoke to Fox News about his apology saying that Romney responded, “very graciously, very graciously.” Huckabee described the encounter, ” I went to him. I just wanted to make sure that he heard directly from me,face to face, eye ball to eyeball, that I truly was sorry that that had come out that it looked like I had taken some shot at is faith. I absolutely did not, and I would not do that and so I apologized because I felt like I owed him that”

Very tricky by Huckabee…slam someone, then simply apologize and try to float above it. Not going to work on the American people, nor will using humor and wit as your main tools and assets as a candidate. The voters are smarter than that, Mike.

Apolgizing was not necessary… they did at one time state that in their Bible. While their Bible changes periodically, really they do. They reprint and change things over time. Blacks used to not be allowed, caffeine used to be bad, and the list continues. It depends on the leaders views at the time.
Attacking someones faith is completely relevant. Give me a break… if a Muslim was running for office it would be an issue and well Mormanism is a religion and it is who you are not what you do if it is your true faith. Bottom line his faith/religion will affect policy if he has a pulse and is human that is why everything he says and does is relevant.

The AP report cited an “Encyclopedia of Mormonism” but did they bother to check the LDS church website on this question?

On first hearing, the doctrine that Lucifer and our Lord, Jesus Christ, are brothers may seem surprising to some—especially to those unacquainted with latter-day revelations. But both the scriptures and the prophets affirm that Jesus Christ and Lucifer are indeed offspring of our Heavenly Father and, therefore, spirit brothers. Jesus Christ was with the Father from the beginning. Lucifer, too, was an angel “who was in authority in the presence of God,” a “son of the morning.” (See Isa. 14:12; D&C 76:25–27.) Both Jesus and Lucifer were strong leaders with great knowledge and influence. But as the Firstborn of the Father, Jesus was Lucifer’s older brother. (See Col. 1:15; D&C 93:21.)

I don’t care either way, as this wouldn’t change my vote. But the AP report is incomplete!

Huckabee spends so much time trying to backtrack on erratic, random statements—it’s no wonder he can’t keep up with current events. Romney’s presidential, intelligent, just plain CLASS ACT today at the debate and throughout this campaign season is what is attracting voters like me (and I might say, a prior Huckabee supporter). The religion card HAS been played in spades, not only by Huckabee, but by my own pastor with our congregation. At first, I was in total denial about it and rationalized this kind of “godly” pressure. Pretty soon, I saw a pattern with not only with my own pastor, but with friends of mine saying the same thing about their pastors. Yes, we all HAVE heard the same derogatory comments made about Mormons come across the pulpits for years. (Those of you out there who are “Evangelical Christians” –or especially Southern Baptists—know I am right…) I am not a Southern Baptist, but my next door neighbor is, and she said those kinds of inflammatory statements, movies, books, etc. against the Mormon Church and its beliefs (that Huckabee continues to quote to the press) have been going on for years. None of us really took that much notice of it until now. It really makes us uncomfortable and we think it’s unfair. That’s why so many of my friends and I have pulled our support from Huckabee. I used to say, “I’m sure he’s a nice guy”—-but now, I’m really not so sure even about that. Christian leaders don’t go around disparaging other people or their religions—whether it be Jewish, Catholic or Mormon. I’m ashamed to be a part of it. One’s faith should stand on its own. If your own beliefs are strong and sound, why the need to disparage someone else’s in the name of being “Christian”? The New York Times article quote is really troubling to me… Of course Huckabee knew what he was talking about. Coming back at the 11th hour and apologizing after the sound bite has been plastered all over the news is cowardly and lame. Sorry Mr. Huckabee, the more you try to apologize and explain, the worse you sound….
Quiet confidence=Mitt Romney.

I believe that you (news reporters and commentators) have to stop judging someone on something that they say, especially Huckabee on the Mormon religion, so he said something about Romney’s religion which if you would do your research on this would find this to be true among other things, after the reporting of the Huckabee comment I went and researched the Mormon religion again and you need to look in their book with which they teach, The Pearl of Great Price, in the book of Moses, and in that book where they believe that in that Cain the brother of Abel is a curse on Black people, and because of that they believe Negro people are refused priesthood in the church, they also say that the Indians are accursed because of their allegedly evil activities so Mormonism to me seems to be a religion of maybe prejudice, I am not saying that Romney is prejudice but that his religion is a lot more than anybody knows, so before you judge someone on what they say look into this before you crucify him. I hope that you will look into Romney’s religion like you do Obama’s. Karen in California

I don’t agree with Huckabee’s support for the Iraq war, but his apology does increase my respect for him. Disagreeing with a candidate on a few issues is fine as long as I knew I’m dealing with an authentic guy. I don’t believe this was a calculated political response; it strikes me as a genuine and admirable response on the part of a really decent guy. I’d feel comfortable having him join me for a cookout, and I’d feel comfortable with him in the White House

Rightsmart,
The bible clearly states that Jesus was the creator (John 1:3). The angels are never referred to as the Creator and God had authority over them. Hence they were (are) created beings. So Jesus and Lucifer cannot be brothers (Jesus would not have created his brother).

Thank you, rightsmart, for revealing the truth. The Mormon Church does indeed believe Lucifer (Satan) and Jesus Christ are brothers. It’s understandable why Mitt Romney didn’t want to admit that point and frighten the voters. What isn’t understandable is why no media person even checked on the veracity of Mike Huckabee’s question instead of castigating him for ‘attacking’ Romney’s faith. How would the media types, not to mention Mitt, handle other amazing yet true beliefs of Mormonism?

God the Father is a glorified, resurrected Man who physically sired Jesus, Adam and millions of spirit children – by countless wives. Jesus was a polygamist and sired many children. Men and women may become Gods and Goddesses. There is no salvation outside the Mormon Church. The Bible is unreliable. Jesus Christ’s atonement isn’t sufficient for the forgiveness of certain sins. In order to get to heaven, a woman must be called by her husband; single people cannot receive eternal life. There’s more, but you get the idea. In my opinion, Mormonism is a cult and having a president who lived their life by these beliefs would trouble me.

These are just a few beliefs about the LDS faith that I learned from a ministry started by a former bishop in the Mormon Church.

Thank you, rightsmart, for stating that the LDS church does indeed believe Lucifer (Satan) and Jesus Christ are brothers. The Mormons also believe that God the Father physically begat both of them in typical mortal fashion, along with million and millions of spirit children, with a plurality of wives. Since God begat Jesus, with Mary, in typical human fashion, forget the virgin birth. No wonder Mitt Romney didn’t answer the question! It’s a shame the media types mostly chastised Mike Huckabee for ‘attacking’ another candidate’s faith instead of doing some easy research. A former Mormon bishop has a website http://www.concernedchristians.org that is very informative.

Just a few inconvenient Mormon beliefs they would have discovered: The Mormon God was once a man, and is limited in power. There are many gods, and man can become god and have endless sex populating his very own planet. The Bible is unreliable. Jesus Christ’s atonement isn’t sufficient for the forgiveness of several sins. Single people do not receive eternal life.

I’d have a problem with my president holding and acting on these beliefs.

Its funny to see so many people who are not Mormons pretend to be experts on what the Mormons believe. Please don’t trust everything you read on the internet or get via hearsay, I am not a Mormon but I do know they believe in Jesus Christ as the saviour of mankind. In fact his name is included in the name of their religion. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. That is enough for me since I don’t pick candiates based on what church they attend.

It looks like from several of the blogs that bigotry is alive and doing well!! To all of you who spew hatred for others’ religion, I’m sorry that you are blind in looking beyond your rant to see the truth. If you are wondering how Mr. Romney is gong to lead the nation, look at the man he is and how he has lived his life. Look at his record as governor. Look at his years in the business world. Look at the integrity he brought back to the Olympic games. Look at the way he treats his wife. Look at the way he treats his sons.

As for Mr. Huckabee apologizing. He absolutely should have. There is no religious test for becoming President of United States. To try and inject religious theology into the presidential election process is unconstitutional! The only purpose it serves is to incite hatred and divide into the process. Let’s stop for a minute and remember: A President should want to bring our nation together. We need a leader that can do this. We are the UNITED States of America. We share this great land and TOGETHER we make it what it is.

Making judgements about a peaceful faith is not a function of federal government…NOR should it be done by someone seeking the highest office of federal government.

Mormon’s believe in Jesus Christ and accept His salvation. It seem’s that for anti-mormons that just is not good enough. If one wants to really know what Mormons believe maybe it would be good to see the church web at LDS.org and stay away from half truths that most other web pages are filled with.

What is really frightening is that someone who believes they are a “god in embryo” could possibly be the front runner for the Republican party. I’m a registered Republican and have been since I was able to vote (I’m 50). The rants by believers in this cult – the only cult in American history to have mainstreamed itself into American culture BTW – are disturbing. The non-Mormons who have researched this cult have it right in their postings here. Check out this belief — Mormon men believe they will become gods someday and rule over their own planet earth with their goddess wife who will remain perpetually pregnant with “spirit babies” populating their earth.
I’m not making this stuff up and I’m shocked that the media refuses to reveal the truth about this bizarre religion.

How can the media ignore that Mormon teachings teach (as has been discussed here before) all people of color are cursed?! A “new revelation” that Romney tries to tell us about is baloney. This is taught in their Book of Mormon and all Mormons must believe in lock-step that this book is perfect with perfected teachings direct from God through Joseph Smith. Privately – Mormons believe blacks are curesed – that’s the truth of the matter.

Mormons definitely believe that Jesus is the brother of Satan as verified right here by a Mormon – so I don’t understand why Huckabee had to apologize for telling the truth! It’s perplexing!

If anyone were to research the bizarre secret Mormon Temple Ceremony and what goes on in THAT crazy Masonic knock-off – it would curl your hair. http://nowscape.com/mormon/mormcr1.htm

I could go on and on about the deep, deep concern I have regarding Romney ever getting near the presidency. I will of course be accused of being an “anti” or a bigot. The fact is – this cult misrepresents MY faith and defames my faith – the Christian faith – and I am merely defending Orthodox Historical Christianity from the misrepresentation and lies of the Mormon Church and its members. It grieves me that the Mormon Church calls itself Christian. They worship multiple gods (believing they can evolve themselves into gods if they are perfect Mormons) and Christians worship one and only one God. The Jesus of the Bible – the Jesus of MY faith — Christianity couldn’t POSSIBLY be the “brother of Satan” because Lucifer was an angel – a created being – and Jesus Christ is God – a singular being who always was and always has been.

I have been praying that Romney fails and fails miserably. Hopefully – if current events keep going as it is – Romney will keep tripping himself up with his lies and waffling and his deceptive campaign answers and will be a non-contender.

The only way I will vote for John McCain is if Mike Huckabee becomes his running mate. And all religions have value and purpose I believe.
