Subliminal Cross in New Xmas Ad? Its Only a Bookcase, Says Huck
Houston, TX-
Blowing up in the blogosphere today were allegations of a subliminal image, a cross, in the background of Mike Huckabee’s new “What Really Matters ” ad. Some bloggers, and political observers, see the image in the ad as an appeal, or clandestine wink, to Evangelicals, a prominent GOP base that Huckabee has been successfully courting in his surging campaign. One of his opponents, Ron Paul, said the purported image goes too far.
“It reminds me of what Sinclair Lewis once said. He says, ‘when fascism comes to this country, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross,’ ” Paul told Fox News. “Now I don’t know whether that’s a fair assessment or not, but you wonder about using a cross, like he is the only Christian.”
Huckabee’s New Ad
Fox News caught up with Governor Huckabee while he took a fundraising tour through Texas today, and asked him about his new ad.
“It’s a bookshelf. It’s nothing more than a book shelf,” Huckabee responded, chuckling in disbelief.” All the people that are reading something into it, have made us all laugh out loud…insane.

..a bookcase.. a bookcase backlighted so much, I always thought it was a cross, and never knew it was a bookcase.. He knew it, too..sheesh..I was offended with the whole ad because I am Jewish, and considered it too secular for a hopeful president. On the other hand, I live in Arkansas and would never vote for this snake-oil salesman anyway.
I have seen this ad, all I saw was a politician doing what they do, speaking to Americans wanting their support…I saw nothing wrong with it…..
America, do something! http://www.ronpaul2008.com
After looking at the ytube video of Huckabee, I can only say the background is clearly a bookcase and not a cross. There is a Christmas tree. Whoever brought this matter up is clearly paranoid.
People like Ron Paul should go back to church and find out what a real cross looks like.
Religion is cutting both ways nationally. An ecumenical film production company is set to release an important documentary in January which deals with faith and religion in the political process. I think it may be one of the most important issues we face this political cycle. Check it out at articlevithemovie.com
His insistence that it’s ‘just a bookcase’ sounds about as sincere as his insistence that his political ad is really just a ‘holiday greeting.’
Boy, does this ever come under the classification of “BIG WHOOP.”
I wonder if perhaps those who see something subliminal in each and every ad would like for me to look under their bed and in their closet before they go to sleep just in case there is a monster lurking somewhere?
I’m not sure who I’ll vote for yet but I saw nothing wrong with Huckabee’s ad. It was kind of restful, a respite from all the scarcely veiled slander that usually passes for a political ad.
This is nothing more than a manufactured controversy. I don’t care if the cross was intentional or not. I want a politician who does not bow to political correctness. Huck is the man.
Time for america to wake up! Our country was founded on Biblical Christian beliefs and standards and we need to return back to them. A bookshelf-a cross? So whats the big deal? Huckabee 08′
I fully agree with Robbie B, It is time for America to wake UP!! and realize that our GREAT country was based on Judeo Christian values and it is my belief that if we as nation do not recognize this fact and want to continue to put down people for saying something like Merry Christmas instead of just happy holidays we are definitly taking the wrong path. This is evident in the workplace as companies are mandating that we must use the term happy holidays as not to offend anyone. Since when did Christ offend anyone? The people who believe in Christ should be given the same respect as anyone else even if they have different beliefs. The Secular progressives are the people solely responsible for this political correctness attitude imposed on the rest of society. There is no doubt in my mind that I will proudly vote for Governer Mike Huckabee and support him fully!!! God Bless Governer Mike Huckabee and I wish him and his family a very, very, Merry Christmas…
I never saw a cross, and I am a Christian. I saw a bookshelf. I guess it’s true—people see (and hear) what they want to see.
Bookshelf MY EYE!! Please Mr. Huckabee, don’t insult our intelligence by telling us that you and your producers of the commercial never happened to notice that the bright, shining bookshelf behind you resembles a cross. I was starting to like you actually, but this little stunt and then lying about it, has revealed you as a true politician.
Another awesome ad…I think this one might get more free air time than the Norris one. And it’s all thanks to the over-reacting media and Christophobes out there who get their panties in a wad anytime Jesus is mentioned. So where is the outrage, the continous coverage by Fox and other media outlets over the fact that Ron Paul just called Mike Huckabee a facist? Let’s see you guys rake him over the coals for this statement just as much as you do Huckabee over using the name of Jesus in reference to Christmas. And by the way Sarafin-it IS Christmas, not xmas. You should google the term sometime, you might be facinated to see the connection between Jesus and the holiday know as Christmas.
I didn’t read the blog because the headline used an “X” instead of Christ.
Robbie,
NO, our country was founded by Christians … NOT, on Christian beliefs. Why then were our founders so adamant about separating church and state? Their genius was knowing politics and religion do not mix. In fact, they knew the mix was dangerous.
This is not political correctness speaking, it’s the Constitution!!!
Carl Cameron and Mike Huckabee just passed a church with a CROSS on it! (during their interview on the road) Another huge subliminal plot by the ignorant hillbilly (tongue in cheek) from Arkansas! Give me a break!

Who cares. It is a cross it isn’t a cross….he is hijacking Christmas for his own political ends either way. I am fine with someone wishing me a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy Holidays, or Eid Il-Ftr. I am a bit annoyed that the good Ole’ Huckster came out and said “Hey Lets get away from politics and I will wish you a Merry Christmas” (hint hint, wink wink, hey look at me I am a Christian I have no other platform so look at me. I am not being politcal, just vote for me.)
If it was about Christmas he would have put out the same add during his Governership. It is all politics so don’t say it isn’t when it is and don’t hijack Christmas to do it.
Great its cross and woting for Hack will be great i love it ????

Of course he knew it was a cross. That’s the part that offends me – not the cross, but the fact that he thinks we are stupid enough to believe he did not know it.
the repub,
sounds like someone needs to go back and study their American history…Find out the true meaning and reason our forefathers put “seperation of church and state” in the constitution. I wont go into the true meaning. Hopefully we as American will study a little more really learn what our constitution means and why it was written.
Again, so what is the big deal if it was a cross….mmmm…lets see, he said the word CHRISTmas, and said Christ and nobady criticized for that. May God send REVIVAL to AMERICA. Huckabee 08′
the repub,
Sounds like someone needs to go back and study their American history and find out why our forefathers wrote and what they meant by “seperation of church and state” I wont take the time to teach it but hopefully we Americans will take the time to truly learn and understand our constitution.
By the way he also mentioned the word Christmas and Christ, aren’t thoughs no no’s in our “political correct” society. I do not hear anyone screaming about that. May God send Revival to America and reveal His son Jesus as the Christ to America’s heart! A president that does not bow to political correctness, but rather runs a nation under the authority of God’s word is what America needs. Huckabee 08′
A bookshelf huh? Well I guess Mr. Huckabee does not read much because I didn’t see any books on the shelf. Of course, that would explain why he is never current on any of the issues.
Thanks for the info Huckster, but we all know you wanted it to look like a cross. It is just disappointing that you don’t have the backbone to stand up and take responsibility for your own actions.
Robbie,
You are one scary dude.
If you want a Christian nation, why don’t you go off to some far-off land and found one? This Country is taken.
God protect us from a second inquisition.
I have no problem with Huckabee putting a cross in his Christmas message or using putting Christianity is his campaign. I do have a huge problem with what he said” Its a bookshelf nothing more than a bookshelf. Thats a obvious lie!!
During his Christmas message, there is a huge lighted cross conveniently located directly to the left of his head. The books have been taken off the bookshelf as to not blur the line of the cross. I wonder how long it took the set up that camera angle so that light is hitting the bookshelf just right.
Again I have no problem with the cross, but don’t lie about it.
