Huck stands up to Romney.

It wasn’t quite Bob Dole circa 1988 “quit lying about my record” but in a Des Moines news conference Huckabee unloaded on Romney’s attack ads.

“he’s been attacking me just ruthlessly in the mail and on television and distorting the record and I think we need to get the record straightened up…the attacks have been desperate and I think they have been dishonest.”

But wait! Then Huck said

“I’m not gonna fight with him. He’s throwing punches and I’m saying merry christmas.”

Then Huckabee suggested that when the eventual nominee is selected he would like to be legitimately supportive. It was hard to not notice……he cast himself as an also ran.

“We’re gonna at some point have a nominee. It’s gonna be one of us and the rest of us are all gonna be sort of forced to sort of stand on that stage with big smiles on our face and say this is just great with us…I don’t want to do that with some disingenuous grin on my face, I wanna be able to say we had a good battle, the best man won, and now we are going to unite this party, we’re gonna keep the WH and bring America back to its best days”.

Whoops!

How gutless is it for Romney to be making all these attacks when Huckabee prefers not to fight. I think Romney is like the John Kerry of the Republican party. He flip flops on issues if it’ll get him more votes, and he’s shamelessly attacking the other candidates.

I would vote for another Nixon before I vote for Romney.

As usual, Huck likes to makes disingenuous comments. He calls out Mitt and then says he doesnt want to debate. Lets have a Huck vs Mitt debate. No other participants. Just those two guys on the debate stage. Then, the horrible record, lack of vision, and general dishonesty will be so obvious, even the paid ministers supporting Huck will be embarrassed….if thats possible.

Vote Huckabee. Mitt Romney is a liberal in disguise. He is the Republican Party’s John Kerry. Look, just like Kerry, Romney has also flip=flopped on every important issue, including abortion, gay rights, immigration, border security, the Iraq surge, and the Bush tax cuts. Only Huckabee is the true Christian conservative candidate. That’s why he gets my vote. Romney is too liberal.

Comment by Roger Waters

Huck is disingenuous. Lets have an honest debate…just Huck vs Mitt. Then, the dishonest and liberal and low-IQ Huck will be exposed.

Huckabee seems to think it’s unfair for others to point out his record, yet he doesn’t make attempts to debate it. There is no debating his record.

And Spencer – I have to say there is much intellectual dishonesty in your post it’s not worth getting into.

Hardly casting himself as an “also ran”, Carl. Huckabee is simply pointing out the obvious: These guys will all have to support the eventual nominee.

With Rudy waffling all over the place and Mitt riding on the misinformation express, all that remains is McCain, who seems to be “push polling” in Huckabee’s name. Tancredo and Ron Paul are only providing comic relief.

That’s just rough and tumble politics that happens in the primaries. However, Huckabee’s message is that when all the bar fighting is over, these guys will have to regroup and reunite the party.

While I disagree with Roger Waters about Huckabee, I think he’s right — get the also rans out and let Huckabee and Romney fight it out — I would add that this debate should Rudy and McCain, who both have a chance at winning. The mean spiritedness of Mitt will be a stark contrast to Huckabee’s comfortable style. The comparison of Rudi to Hillary will be easier to make when his positions aren’t blurred by the message candidates, and John Rodham McCain will be exposed as the Liberal he is.

So Mitt Romney has attacked Huckabee’s record. Huckabee didn’t talk about his record he just did some name calling. So who is the one attacking whom? Why doesn’t Huckabee discuss his record. He could say something like. Yes, I increased taxes, Yes i destroyed 87 hard drives, but i wasn’t hiding anything. Yes my son massacred a dog and I didn’t do anything about it though the investigating officer got fired for some completely different issue. Yes I pardoned over 1000 prisoners who were put in jail by a jury of their peers and there was no new evidence that made me do it. So what if the rapist did it again it was in another state not mine. Yes I claim to beat the Clintons, even though I was not elected governor until my second term because the Clintons sold out their friend and I took his place. Yes I make pretty good jokes so you should vote for me. Or yeah I am more religious than political…just look at my add it is not politcal at all. I am not doing it to get my face in the public in good light rather than actually discuss anything new.
Then Mitt can defend his position…..AGAIN….I was prochoice and when it came down to it I had to decide on the side of life. As my record plainly shows. Any other questions. Oh by the way I am Mormon and I have discussed that too….any other points that you would like to discuss other than my record of being able to work with a hostel congress and still get work done, balance a budget, understand economics, foreign affairs, and immigration?

Mitt the ‘The slimy salesman’ will tell you anything to make the sale!!! It’s refreshing to see a candidate that just represents his views and doesn’t attack people when they are a threat. Mitt had nothing but nice things to say about Mike when he wasn’t ahead in the polls. NOW he wants to attack, distort the record, and take everything out of context to mis-represent Mike’s record. It sucks because Mike’s budget is not that of a mega millionaire salesman so he can’t defend it. And what’s worse is people like Roger Walters eat this stuff up like it true facts. You are being deceived by a sales man……do some research and get a clue.

Mike represents America and is fighting to save us from the IRS. I will NEVER vote for a mega millionaire flip-flopping greasy salesman…EVER!!

You know Mike is good for the country when the main stream media hates him and the other candidates lie about him in attacks….

Finally, a REAL person running for office…

Mike gets my vote!!!! DOWN WITH THE IRS!!!!! FAIR TAX… FAIR TAX… FAIR TAX… FAIR TAX… FAIR TAX… FAIR TAX.. FAIR TAX… FAIR TAX

Huckabee does not want to fight??? This is not a fight, Huckabee is plain and simply not defending his poor record. Oh China just decided to get tough with the US on free trade, Huckabee will choose not to stand up and we will expect China to step down. The he is getting picked on argument is stupid…He has made poor decisions in his time and he needs to comfront them. Huckabee wants to keep people focussed off of issues and onto religion. His strategy will surely fail out West, and it would surely fail in an issues oriented general election.

Can any of you Huckabee supporters state where the Romney is lying?????? I would attack a burglar trying to get into my home and hurt my family. It is all in semantics and understanding. Huckabee has been soft on criminals (you can’t compare how many he put to death to the number of murderers and others he let go, one is right the other is wrong, doing the right one doesn’t make the other any less wrong). He has taken a liberal stance on illegal immigration. Correct? They broke the law.

Cry all you want when your candidate is being shown for what he is. But it won’t stop the truth from coming out.

Being from Arkansas and being a social conservative, this is par for the course for Huckabee.. he has done this for years. Then he uses outside groups to do his campaign and attacks for him. Look into all the 501c4’s he as taken “payments” from. This is so funny to watch. Of course he can’t talk about his record, so he turns it personal. I hope you enjoy him America because he is just as slick as our other former son from Arkansas.

I admire everything about Mike Huckabee. I always suspected Mitt , when I saw his ad to protect the womans right to choice. I do beieve he will choose life but he will lie to get in office. This has been proven. Did anyone watch Chris Mathews. He strongly questioned Mitts lies about walking with MLK, Dad walkingwith MLK, being a lifelone hunter, and getting the NRA endorsement. Also, newsweek, denied his claim that they supported his record as not allowing any paroles or clemons. Newsweek, actually condemned his record! He was just trying to be politically correct and failed to take care of his citizens. I encourge you to read the article and also go the Mike Huckabee.com and get the truth. I read last night that Romney is still a silent partner that owns the rights to the radio stations that Rush, Beck, and Hannity work for. This explains the lopsided coverage you hear there. Please check this stuff out!!

Why all the blog posts in defense of Huckabee and against Romney? Just asking.

Comment by Mark

Hey Ben, can you state where Romney is not lying?

The truth: How many clemency cases did Romney actually review while he was governor of Massachusetts? Did he simply avoid his responsibility as chief executive of the state to review clemency cases and give petitioners a fair hearing? Two of the previous three governors before Huckabee were Bill Clinton and convicted felon Jim Guy Tucker. Governor Huckabee’s clemency rate, however, was in line with other governors who have served the state.

Romney also fails to acknowledge that in Arkansas, every person who is convicted of a crime and every person in prison is eligible for clemency. Because of this, the number of clemency applications is extraordinarily high. Governor Huckabee had 8,698 applications during his 10 ½ years in office.

Some Governors are content to simply deny the vast majority of clemency applications without bothering to consider their merit.
Governor Huckabee, however, believed that respect for the legal process required that he give them the consideration for which they were entitled. During his tenure, Governor Huckabee denied 88 percent of the applications.

Before granting clemency, the Governor issues a notice of intent and opens a 30-day public comment period in which people can protest the decision. Very rarely does the public oppose a clemency because almost all are granted for minor offenses, involve reductions in fines, or reduced prison sentences that were longer than the average for a particular crime.

During the 10 ½ years Mike Huckabee was governor the number of government agencies and businesses that conducted background checks increased at an incredible rate. The terrorist acts of September 11, 2001, have resulted in increased concerns regarding security. Potential job candidates and long-time employees considered for promotion are under increased scrutiny.

Before the mainstream use of background checks, most people could have some youthful arrest, change their lives and become good, tax-paying citizens without that earlier arrest coming back to haunt them.

Governor Huckabee found during his time in office that each year the number of people needing clemency to clear their record increased. Denying their request prevented them from continuing to earn a good living and pay taxes. The majority of the clemency requests he granted were for this reason.

Romney is not bashing–he’s comparing records and Huckabee simply doesn’t want to go there. I want a President who will defend himself, not someone who simply says “Merry Christmas” and can’t we all just get along. THIS IS A PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY!! You are supposed to do two things.

1- Explain why you think you would be the best candidate
2- Explain your positions when they come into question

Mitt Romney has done both. Huckabee is running with his religion as the centerpiece. Strip it all away and you don’t have someone who could beat Obama or Clinton.

Don’t get me wrong–I think (at least I hope) Mr. Huckabee is a nice guy, but I don’t think he’s the best Republican candidate for President. Having rally’s at churches–isn’t that against the constitution?? I think he will end up being more divisive running this style of campaign.

Comment by Saturn Sam

Hay JT,
Get your facts straight, Huckabee doesn’t have rallys at church on Sunday, he just goes to worship, maybe you should join him one Sunday and see for yourself.

Comment by ashley

Mark- You better check your facts Huckabee’s clemency added up to more than all 6 surronding states combined. His clemency(s) were more than his previous 4 gov combined. HE ABUSED HIS POWER AND THAT IS A FACT. He let out criminals due to church connections, donations, etc…

Sat Sam- Huckabee is having fund raisers at church. He was paid 10k this last time. But there has been multiple other times where he got upwards of 25k. He only donated the last 10k back to his church in AR cause the media finally addressed it. I agree w/JT. This is an election for president not preacher!

Why is it when a candidate points out differences it is labeled as mud. Hey if the truth hurts and you are ashamed of your record then you should have thought about that when you are doing it. Romney has factually described Hucks record. I actually looked it up for myself. It is quite simple to do.

Funny thing if you bother to do a quick research on Huckabee you will find a # of lies. Such as he does not have a Theology degree- he quit after 1 yr. He did introduce and wrote a bill decreasing meth offenders sentence to 50% and then gave them 12 days a mo off for good behavior—so essientially they only served 1/3 of their sentence. He took contributions and was fined 5 times by the AR ethics board. There are just too many to list. Google Huckabee + dirt and get all the info for yourself.

I am glad Romney is doing the work for the lazy voter. If they will not research the candidates someone has to do it for them. Else we end up with NIXON #2.

Mike Huckabee the wikipedia candidate.
Since Mike Huckabee has had a very difficult time raising campaign funds, its understandable if he and his team would be using wikipedia for research and fact checking. It would account for Huckabee’s many flubs and bad facts, for example Pakistan (geography, illegal immigration) , National Intelligence Estimate (staying at a Holiday Inn is suppose to make you smarter, not dumber), his own and his opponents records to mention a few. But what isn’t understandable how a candidate with a record of ethics violations (receiving tens of thousands of dollars of gifts while Governor of AK) and possible violation of AK state law relating to the Wayne Dumond case (read article below), can call Gov. Romney dishonest.
Former Aide Contradicts Huckabee Defense Of Rapist’s Release
December 5, 2007 05:42 PM ________________________________________Directly contradicting Mike Huckabee’s claims, his former senior aide tells the Huffington Post that, as governor of Arkansas, Huckabee indeed told the state’s parole board that he supported the release of a convicted rapist.
The senior aide, Olan W. “Butch” Reeves, personally attended a controversial parole board meeting with Huckabee in Oct. 1996.
“The clear impression that I came away with from the meeting was that he favored Dumond’s release,” Reeves said, referring to convicted rapist Wayne Dumond. “And I can understand why board members would believe that to be the case.” Candidate
This stands in stark contrast to Huckabee’s assertion, repeated at a press conference today that he “did not ask [the board] to do anything.” When asked directly about trying to influence the board, Huckabee responded: “No. I did not. Let me categorically say that I did not.”
But, according to Reeves, Huckabee actually told the parole board members that the prison sentence meted out to Dumond for his rape conviction was “outlandish” and “way out of bounds for his crime.” Huckabee believed there “was something nefarious” about the how the state’s criminal justice system had treated Dumond, Reeves said.
Reeves’s admission comes as a surprise since the interview was encouraged by Huckabee’s presidential campaign. Reeves served as chief counsel to then-Gov. Huckabee until 2003, and was subsequently appointed by Huckabee as chairman of the Arkansas Workers’ Compensation Commission. Reeves has donated to Huckabee’s presidential campaign.
The Huffington Post reported on Tuesday that Huckabee’s gubernatorial office had been privately warned by numerous women that Dumond had sexually assaulted them or their family members, and would likely strike again. Huckabee pushed for the rapists release from prison anyway, and Dumond went on to rape and murder at least one other woman.
In a 2002 story I wrote for the Arkansas Times about Huckabee’s role in freeing Dumond, four board members — three of whom spoke on the record — said that Huckabee lobbied and pressured board members on the matter. This included the 1996 parole meeting at which the board’s recording secretary — who ordinarily tapes the entire sessions — was asked to leave the room. Several board members and members of the state legislature have said the secret session violated state law.
Huckabee, in turn, has said that all four parole board members have lied about his role in Dumond’s release from prison.
Huckabee has also noted that all of the parole board members who have said he lobbied them Dumond were Democrats and that they were pursuing a partisan agenda in making their allegations.

Everyone here is missing THE most important issue in this historic election: SUPREME COURT JUSTICES. In the next few years, at least one or two justices will probably retire — too ill, too old, or just too tired to serve any longer. And it is in the Supreme Court that the real battle over abortion and homosexual rights is taking place. Right now, there is a one-vote majority of conservative-leaning justices. If we ever hope to see the brutal, bloody travesty of abortion turned back in America…. if we ever want to see Roe v. Wade overturned or Doe v. Bolton, then we MUST have a stronger majority on the Court.

There is only one major candidate who could be TRUSTED to nominate a truly conservative, anti-abortion Justice, and that is Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Think about it for a minute. Rudy is pro-choice, with no apologies. He tries to get around this by saying that he will appoint “strict constructionist” judges, but you know his heart isn’t in it. When the time comes, he would say that an anti-abortion justice could not be confirmed, and he wouldn’t try. There is no way he would spend any political capital in such an effort. It would be going against his core convictions. He once said publicly that if he had a daughter who had a crisis pregnancy, he would encourage her to abort his own grandchild. Yikes!

Same thing with Romney. He SAYS he is pro-life, but have you ever heard him speak passionately about why? He is only pro-life because his “How To Speak Like a Republican” handbook tells him that he must take a pro-life position. (Not to even mention the fact that his revered Prophet who founded the Mormon church, Joseph Smith, had 37 wives and taught that you couldn’t go to heaven unless you practiced the “Divine Principle” of polygamy. But that’s for another post.)

McCain, too, isn’t passionate about protecting babies in their mothers’ wombs. And he has sharply criticized those of us who have strong convictions about such issues. (And, he wants to throw open our borders.)

Ron Paul is passionately pro-life, but let’s just say it: he’s wacky. Do you really want someone that hot-tempered sitting in the Oval Office, commanding our armed forces??

Abortion kills babies whose hearts are already beating, and it hurts women. Get the facts. Did you know that the original “Roe” of Roe v. Wade filed a petition to have her favorable ruling set aside? Her name is Norma McCorvey. Same thing with the original “Doe” of Doe v. Bolton.

Whoever gets to appoint the next few Supreme Court justices will have an impact on American life for the next 20 years, in countless arenas and issues. Think, everyone!! It’s all about the JUSTICES!!
