Disruption at McCain’s Townhall! HIV/AIDS activists interfere.
by Carl Cameron
Salem, N.H.
First six people in front of the TV cameras stood and chanted….and were escorted out. Then McCain began his introduction and another group stood up -out they were marched. He stayed calm and told them he welcomed their question about HIV/AIDS funding and would give them a chance to ask about it at the end of his remarks. Finally…..a large group paraded thru the packed gymnasium holding up placards and chanting, “people with AIDS are dying” and left the townhall.
McCain won, the crowd loved his reaction.

Romney is the only one that can beat a democrat in this election experience, fresh ideas, personal responsibility, taking on trial lawyers, leadership, small government, lower taxes, most of all he has a detailed plan for our country, I got to say I love this guy. McCain is weak and not a leader (we’re sick of his war stories). Huckabee is a great public speaker but where is the experience (hey here is a commercial I was going to run, but I’m a do gooder and didn’t … and then he shows the commercial to the media??, or the mormon slider, but I ‘m just a Baptist minister who doesn’t know much about mormons??) sounds like free press. Mitt being a governor in a largely democratic state, and can bring this county together, along with these values he my man. Vote for Mitt!! He looks the part, and guess what he is the part.
McCain may attract people who disagree with him; he says what he really thinks. People may find that refreshing overall, thoguh some will disagree with him.
McCain has taken an early lead in an unscientific on-line poll that has a twist — http://www.LeastObjectionable.com. The site just started. It takes a viewpoint that many voters may have – who is the least problem-ridden in the 2008 race.
Those protesters were totally out of line. What was their point? It was a small townhall meeting so anyone could have just got up and asked a question. There was no need for protests. And why at a McCain rally? Whats he got to do with AIDS funding?
I think they must have thought it was a Huckabee rally
I was one of the protesters at this event. The reason for the protest was that we actually have asked him MANY times to commit to funding for HIV/AIDS, actually we’ve asked him for more than that, and he, like the other republican candidates who we’ve also asked the same questions to, has not committed to funding at all. Our largest asks is that he commit for the U.S. to give aid to 1/3 of the people in the world with the disease, our fair share as we control 1/3 of the wealth in the world.
McCain hides behind generalizations like “corrupt governments” who do not deserve money to help their people. He doesn’t care that 8,000 people die every day around the world from HIV/AIDS. The truth is, the money the United States would spend would really be given to non-governmental organizations, on the ground so that it was in direct contact with the people who need it.
He’s been asked, politely many many times already. We are tired of his lack of response, and we hope that our drastic measures will allow him to understand that we are in fact very serious about this issue.
And at the very end, he did allow the girl he was talking to in this clip to ask a question, she asked two, he answered one, and he still stuck to his line that he will not fund corrupt governments.
He needs to come out with a plan, if it’s not ours, then he needs one that will work for him, but he hasn’t seen the last of us.

I AGREE WITH NAVIN, WHAT DOES JOHN MCAIN HAVE TO DO WITH AIDS, HE OFFERED TO LET THEM SPEAK AFTER HE WAS FINISHED, BUT THEY JUST ACTED LIKE JERKS…….THEY WERE OUT OF LINE
Why McCain? Reeve says it his/herself: “[McCain], like the other republican candidates who we’ve asked the same question to has not committed to funding…” These individuals do not care WHO they get funding from or HOW they gain attention, they just WANT IT. No matter if the time, person, or place is appropriate, this behavior, like other childish tantrum behaviors, they have learned earns more attention and unfortunately at times pays off more when exhibited in public. This was an act of coersion, they don’t care if McCain, or anyone else for that matter, really stands behind their cause and WANTS to fund it, but that they are able to pressure, guilt, and intimidate others into giving. THIS is what McCain is referring to when he refers to them as “corrupt governments.” It is unfortunate because the AIDS cause is such a good one, that they would sully their hands with these types of techniques thereby aleinating others who might have been potential backers.
McCain says that he cannot support humanitarian funding (specifically for HIV/AIDS) because he believes that African governments are corrupt and will put all of the money in a “Swiss bank account.” The truth of the matter is that activists are calling for an expansion of a plan that was set up by President Bush in 2003, and which Bush has even expressed an interest in expanding on.
Unfortunately McCain is not taking this issue seriously, and as a result we had to resort to more drastic measures to get his attention because this is such an important issue.
Again, we have spoken to him in the past, I personally have talked to him three times, and every time we get the same answer, no.
