Mitt in the Middle
Mitt Romney scored spectacular numbers in Frank Luntz’s focus groups. (See previous post, The Forum is Over, Who Won?) He withstood withering condescension from his rivals, tough questions from Chris Wallace, all after a full campaign day. Romney has campaigned harder and for longer than all of them. Romney was seated in the middle, and he was in the middle of every exchange.
He stuck to his guns and fired several good shots of his own. He let almost no charge go un-rebutted and pivoted to offense effectively on many. As far as debating tactics, poise and execution are concerned he won.
That said, he has a heckuva job ahead. The Union leader has been pounding Romney. Huckabee’s win and attacks on Romney in Iowa left alot of bruises. Romney’s strategy always included wins in Iowa and or New Hampshire – and now he’s running 2nd to the McComeback Kid, MAC IS BACK! John McCain
Could tonight turn the corner?

McCain didn’t seem to do himself any harm. Still, it’s the second night in a row that the cutaway camera caught him looking delighted, no to say smug, during the onslaughts that befell Romney, almost too happy.
Giuliai and Thompson were non factors, which seems in sync with their chances here. None of them like Romney. In various ways they have all derided Mitt as the multi millionaire son of George Romney who flipped and flopped his way through various elections before running for Governor, then did some more flipping, before running for President.
Tonight for the most part Romney explained things rationally.
Huckabee had little to say and frankly not much to gain had he gone for it. He appears headed for third, ahead of Ron Paul and Rudy. (There are lots of 9-11 truthfolks here with Ron Paul signs)
Huckabee did fine – but the cultural and social values disconnect may be too much in NH. His crowds are big, but not breathtaking. The fact that he has curbed the Christian rhetoric is smart in NH.
This is the Live Free or Die state. There are lots of devout people from many faiths here. But this is NEW ENGLAND! One keeps it to ones’ self. These are among the smartest voters in the country. They know what Huck said in Iowa. They know he’s an ordained Southern Baptist minister He has preached here.
But evangelical baptists here are far more socially liberal than in the South. A recent Pew Research poll suggested they make up 18% of the NH GOP. Compare that to 38% in Iowa and 53% in SC!!
Romney has one more day. Polling is irrelevant. Time for lots of events and big get out the vote efforts. If the polls are right and the anecdotal tealeaves we all study are right…he may be winning more delegates and another silver medal.
My ole Pal Tom Rath (one of the most respected analyst/strategist/advisers in NH for decades) had a great line today: with delegates in Iowa, Wyoming, New Hampshire, and soon Michigan, by the time they get to SC Mitt will still have the best “body of work.”

carl-I keep hearing you report Mitt gained 3 delegates in Wisconson. Your Fox ticker reports 8 delegates, and FOX news reported 9 on Sat pm news. Pls correct your/FOX numbers…its confusing enuff as it is…and thoroughly enjoyable thanks to you….and Major-but mostly you for the last year.
thx
Mitt was by and far the CLEAR winner tonight. BIG TIME. I really hope NH voters were watching. The more people actually hear Mitt, the more they respond. If you only rely on the media reports, you would never know just how well he did. He DOMINATED in every category.
GO MITT!!!
I despise 9-11 truthers and I seriously doubt there were any of those out there amongst us Ron Paul Supporters.
Note to Carl Cameron,
Not all Ron Paul supporters are 9/11 “truthfolks”. To say so is incredibly presumptuous and disrespectful. Not that Fox would know anything about respecting Ron Paul or anything…
Fox News made a mockery of the so called democratic process by not including Ron Paul in the debate tonight despite him beating Giuliani (try proofreading) in Iowa and beating him and Fred Thompson in NH polls.
It appears that the accusations over the years that Fox manipulates the NEWS to serve questionable ends it true. There is NO EXCUSE for not inviting Ron Paul to the debate. I will boycott Fox from hear on.
Haha! You exclude the top Republican fundraiser for Q4, and a man polling above Giuliani and the media-annointed stooge, Thompson, an act that has caused what little credibility you had to dissipate, and all you can do is make cheap truther jokes? By the way, what’s with Frank Luntz’s planted “focus group” members?
Ol’ Mitt is a slick one, all right. He’s definitely the most telegenic of any of the Republicans. He’s also completely full of it. He’s gonna say whatever he needs to say at the time to get your vote. Personally, the last thing I want in the White House is another president who governs according to the latest poll numbers. I had my fill of that from 1992-1999. Likewise, I don’t want someone in the White House who is beholden to the far right wing and who regards the other party as “the enemy.” I’ve had my fill of that for the last 7 years, although I will give President Bush a ton of credit for the way he’s prosecuted the war against ialsmic extremism.
What I want is a president who has been consistent, who’s not afraid to stand up for what he believes to be right (even if it’s not popular at the time), who’s experienced, and who has strength of character. For me, that candidate is John McCain. I really hope he whips Mitt’s butt on Tuesday.
Another great win for Mitt!
Carl you were clearly not happy with Mitts resounding success. You looked like Peter Jennings when Bush and the Republicans cleaned house in 2000. Look this is what happens when you put all of your efforts into electing an unelectable Huck.
Just think, Huck can return to Arkansas and keep the Clinton’s company- they can have you over for chicken dinner.
Nice jab at Ron Paul by associating him with a very small group of idiot supporters.
Campaign Carl –
You talked at length about the Huckster’s out-of-synch-with-New-England religion, but not a word about the clearly unorthodox (from New England’s perspective) beliefs of the man you came to praise (or at least, to praise his performance), Mitt Romney.
Fortunately, today (Sunday)’s New York Times Magazine has stripped away the veil just a little bit – with facts (some pretty remarkable, and a few even shocking) – and more than a bit of humor (Mormons on Wall Street are like Jews, but taller – what a hoot to this born-Jewish political observer), the NYT Magazine article laid bare what it really means to be a devout Mormon, and to observe (perhaps even to praise) Mitt’s done a fine job of skating any examination of his beliefs and what they mean.
As the article pointed out, it’s not every religion that’s got a “Living Prophet” who speaks authoritatively as Jesus’ official mouthpiece on earth, and who every Bishop – and Mitt’s a Bishop – has sworn to obey in a sacred and secret temple oath. This isn’t widely known, in a move the article called “soft secrecy” – a wonderful, evocative phrase.
Mitt has indeed skated the truth behind his faith. The one time it was raised, he shouted “bigot” instead of answering the question – yet he doesn’t say, “hey, folks, let’s leave all of our religions out of it” – he’s more than happy to see the Huckster’s foot-washin’ ways open to public comment – and often public ridicule – yet his own faith is untouchable.
Maybe now that the NYT has legitimized the discussion of what it means to be a Mormon Bishop – who’s sworn a secret blood oath in his sacred temple to obey the every command of the Living Prophet – it will be OK to talk about it. Like, what if the Living Prophet got word from Jesus that President Mitt had to act on the Mormon beliefs about the second-class status of women or the sinful status of Gays – that these beliefs had to become the law of the land? Or – not so obviously – what if the Living Prophet told President Mitt to open trade barriers with China so the Mormon Missionaries could get in there and harvest a few million Chinese for their roster?
Maybe Mitt has good answers for these questions (the NYT article didn’t think so, and explained why) – but maybe voters need to at least know what they’re buying before they buy into Mitt for President. However, maybe Mitt’s minions will condemn me as a bigot instead of talking about the real tenets of their faith. Based on two centuries of history, I’d bet on the latter …
I agree with the test group. Romney was on fire. He exposed Huckabee on taxes and Immigration. He schooled McCain on the meaning of Amnesty. AND….imagine this he did it without attacking anyone personally. Maybe Huck and McCain could take some notes on how to debate without personal attacks. Romney is by far the strongest on Immigration, fiscal and economy. McCain has to tout the only thing he has a decent record on….war. Well i agree with Romney we can not play musical chairs with people breed in washington if we want to change and sweep out the trash of washington. It does not take a military leader to be a good president. It takes leadership and knowledge. well ROmeny has both. McCain has never led anything. He has followed in the military but last time i looked mc was not a general???
After watching the debate tonight (Sunday Jan 9th), I think Romney did us all a favor by forcing the other candidates to talk about the real issues in relation to their records. He seems to be balanced in having the right values when it comes to caring for others and his family, but tough when it comes to fighting for the welfare of this country and standing up for true “conservative” principles. Also, the guy has energy! Don’t we want someone like him to stand up to the terrorist? keep the economy going? fix Social Security? Set up health care system?, make us energy independent, etc.? Let’s tap into this energy – the other guys looked like they were ready to fall asleep compared to Romney. He has the best chance of winning next Nov – Go Romney!!
Romney smug? You bet! I’m all for a strong economy first, but this guy plays to the moment… get’s his present positions on issues much the same way Slick Willie did (and Bill provided the majority of Hillery’s “35 years of experience”… as Slick’s bride). He says whatever you want him to say… unless you’re running against him.
I’m not a McCane fan… but to say a member of Congress is unable to be President, stick with a rich boy? Bah. I hope NH sends him to the back of the line…
Mitt clearly hit a home run! Yet he is bearly getting attention! Good job mitt!
Carl. I’m not happy with your reporting on these debates. If the focus group hadn’t been available to prevent your spin, no one would ever hear about Romney’s performance tonight. Thank goodness the focus group forced the pundits to do more than add up the one line jabs that Carl did when first summarizing the first debate. A junior high newspaper reporter could have given us that analysis. Mitt Romney had to do the press’ job for them to get the other candidates weaknesses on the issues out for public consumption.
I have been bothered by Huckabee’s continued underhanded insults to Romney recently (remind you of the guy that fired you, someone who wakes up on third base and thinks they hit a triple, etc.).
Nice to see the moderator shine some light on it tonight. Tonights debate demonstrated that Huckabee showed up with his plastic baseball bat and tee, and discovered Mitt was playing big league ball. Send Huck back to Pee Wee league.
Credibility is THE issue; The Change we want is to believe our political leaders.
Our political leader’s utter loss of credibility makes the solution to most of America’s toughest problems unreachable. When most anyone in power speaks you just can’t believe them. Over and over they parse words. The reason everyone is turning on Mitt is not the religion or even just the flipping, it’s because he lacks credibility across the board. Obama is winning because he is more credible than the Clintons. He can’t beat Obama because Obama is more credible hands down. If somehow he could beat any Democrat, I simply can’t stand the idea or another 4 years of dishonesty. America can’t stand this. Our world wide prestige took a huge hit from this when with the events of 9/11 we should have had a bank of goodwill. It was simply because of credibility. Mitt simply is not authentic.
Mitt is fabricated. Last night he even said he never claimed that McCain wanted Amnesty. Does he think we are suckers? Do you think he will get more honest once elected? John McCain and the other are authentic. What separates McCain from the others is experience and a demonstration of courage under fire.
NH won’t be bought. Return credibility to our government. Vote McCain with me on January 8th.
Fox did everything they can do to prop up Willard. This is bad for Republicans and wont get them in the Whitehouse.
The questions setup Mitt to dominate and gave him a pass on all his credibility issues. Mitt will not become more honest when elected.
I am one NH Independent voting McCain and I will work to bring everyone I know. We need McCain for America more than the Republican establishment needs to control the party by promoting someone with no content.
Romney’s statement about governors can make better change than senators is false. Carter was a governor, Clinton was a governor, and George W Bush was also a governor. They all have made some changes, but not really inspirational change. Since JFK, all of our elected president was either vice presidents or governors. One may in fact argues the two most inspirational presidents were senators before becoming US president: Lincoln and Kennedy. We have not had a senator for president for a long long time. Maybe it is time now.
This will resonate in NH
Carl,
Don’t you find it amazing that the media (you guys included)can more than sometimes, dwell on the faith of a candidate(except for Romney of course)and somehow justify it…..It seems that the speech, that Romney gave about His faith,(which really said nothing)is supposed to make everything Ok….The New York times Magazine article,on sunday, is a lot more accurate on Mormonism than Bishop Romney would like for the voters to realize, and really, there’s a whole lot more than that….Soft secrecy,is the term they use,an rightfully so,however with the internet today, these things are easily confirmed….When we put a man down for His beliefs, because we’re afraid that his decisions are going to be affected,by His faith, then its my belief, that we should know that what Bishop Romney has sworn to must also be included(those things are absolutes in Mormonism),as to what He would be held to when making the decisions a President must make….I heard a person interviewed after the debate last night state tat she would not vote for a Pastor.Well if she’a going to vote for either Huckabee or Romney, she’ll have to vote for a Pastor or a Bishop..I’ll take the former. The point is that we should know about both, not a lot of reference to one and not so much about another…Its kind of sad we find these things out in the NYT,and not on national tv
Carl, the problem withyour exceeedingly long anti-mormon screed is that Mitt Romney has already been the governor of MA for four years and not once during that entire time did he use his position to advocate for his religion or it’s tenets. So why don’t you do the rest of us a favor and refrain from posting completely if you don’t have anything relevant to offer.
I am a registered NH voter.
I will be voting for Mitt Romney this Tuesday.
I honestly can’t stand John Mccain. He did support amnesty and now he expects us to belieev he didn’t. He’s a petty, cranky old man and every time I see him laughing at his own jokes at the expense of others, rolling his eyes at his fellow republicans in the debate and dodging the amnesty usse, I am reminded why he is not presidential material.
I hope my fellow NH voters feel the same way I do and pass on Mccain this time around.
Shame on Fox news for excluding Ron Paul in the “Fox Forum” aired last night. And no tag on the blog either? I shall be excluding Fox News viewing as well if the network cannot rise to the level of playing fair on coverage of candidates.
When are you going to deliver the news
that Mitt Romney won the Wyoming caucus
on Saturday January 5, 2008?
Why not turn this FACT into one of your non-stop,
around the clock news items.
Why not make this a momentum building story for Romney?
Romney is the only candidate to have actually
won delegates, not just a caucus. Please report this fact!!
There are 48 other states that will also contribute
to the Presidential election.
Please get back to your slogan….fair and balanced.
Mitt Romney was by far the best candidate on the Republican side. He is the only one that can win in November against Obama or Hillary. Governor Romney comported himself well and brought up the issues that are important to the American People. The economy, immigration, education, health care and taxes. With all due respect to Senator McCain, he is a war hero but the fact that he has been in washington too long and alot of issues that have been around in Washington for too long have not been resolved, it time for him to go.
What a sham !! You know I always thought Fox was Fair & balanced but the debates .ie Romney hour was shamefull of Fox . Chris Wallace questions were the gottach type to McCain ,Gulliani ,Huckabee & Thompson .Not one tough question to Romney .You might as well been throwing him nerf balls ..Here`s what I know I watched Cal Thomas & Bob Beckels Book review on C-Span .In walked Brit Hulme. Bret Bossell, Knodracki, The mic was on when Cal asked who they were supporting . Suprise!! It was Romney . Two of your post debate talking heads had ties to the Romney campaign .The only fair comment was from Mort Kondracki. Shame on you Fox I know you for what you really are Big money Washington insiders . To suggest Frank Lunz dog & pony show was not a Romney Pro Mo is insulting .I call on Frank Lunz to produce evidence the people interviewed were not hand picked romney supporters. We see thru you Fox and Dr Lunz
Below is his Dr Lunz Bio
Biography
What’s on people’s minds today? More media outlets have turned to Dr. Frank Luntz to understand the hopes and fears of Americans than to any other political pollster. In addition to being an adviser to some of the most powerful Republicans in America, Luntz was a consultant to NBC’s THE WEST WING, worked for several Fortune 100 companies and four different billionaires. Luntz is the wordsmith who championed such catchy phrases as “The Clear Skies Initiative” and “The Death Tax.” David Brancaccio sits down with Luntz to discuss polling of Americans, the significance of the craft of language and what he sees as the difference between Republicans and Democrats. “My quote NEO-CONS

As an undecided voter, I recorded and watched the debates this weekend with a desire to learn more about the GOP front-runners. At times, I paused, rewinded and listened again and again just to ensure that I was hearing the candidates correctly.
In my view, Mitt Romney was the clear winner in both debates. He forced the other candidates to discuss issues and chastised them when they tried to resort to personal attacks. He was calm when under fire and believe me the other candidates (especially McCain & Huckabee) tried to double and tripled team him. When it comes to taxes and illegal immigration he was the only candidate who hit the ball out of the park. The other candidates tried to do some serious spinning about their records.
I was impressed by his explanation of changing his position on abortion and he is right. When you realize that your wrong about an issue, the hard but honorable thing to do is to admit that your were wrong and to correct your position. Huckabee, McCain and Guiliani should take a page from Romney’s book concerning this issue.
Based upon what I saw this weekend, he was the only candidate who demonstrated that he has the ability not only can stand up to the Dems, but who would be able to stand up to the Putin’s, Amidinajad’s, Osama bin Ladens, etc.
In response to Ned, if Romney is representative of Mormon’s, send the Missionaries over to my house.
P.S. I thought that Huckabee and McCain were gonna hold hands and start kissing at any minute.
As an undecided voter, I watched both debates this weekend with interest.
As far as I’m concerned, Romney clearly won both debates. He forced the other candidates to stick to the issues and chastised them when they tried to resort to personal attacks. Romney was calm and collected under fire and believe me McCain, Guiliani and Huckabee really tried to double and triple team against him. Despite this, however, Romney was in command of the debate, presented his views clearly and concisely and hit the ball out of the park especially when talking about illegal immigration and taxes.
Of all the GOP front-runners, he’s the only candidate who demonstrated the ability not only to take on the Dems, but to stand up to the Putins, Ahmadinejads, Osama Bin Ladins, etc., of the world.
In response to Ned, if Romney is representative of the Mormons, please send the Missionaries over to my house!
PS. I thought that Huckabee and McCain were gonna start holding hands and kissing at any minute.
How can people possibly say the Luntz focus group was rigged when 90% of people posting on the internet, not just foxnews but all other news groups as well, said that Romney blew the others away. Did they rig all the other blogs and forums on the internet? Not possible.
This link will show just who won the debate last night: http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=1463
It was overwhelmingly Romney.
Riddle me this. Why is romney;s national polls sinking and he clearing won the debate, he won wyoming , came in second in iowa? last nights losers mcCain and huckabee ratign went up?. please explain
thanks
Carl,
Sticking to reporting the news would be better accepted by those of us that can see through the agenda,of fox news…The look on Brit Hume’s face in Iowa was one of a man that couldn’t find his beloved puppy……In New Hampshire The Orchestratd way questions were posed and the runawawy mouth of Romney which went unchecked, are just providing evidence that Fox is trying to steer things on the republican side of things…sadly, and possibly the taxation that you folks seem to be afraid of from Huckabee just because you let Romney say so, might come true, because if Romney is all there is to consider, there are a ot of people that won’t vote come november, and that, will be a vote for the democrats, but at least we won’t have to stand before God and answer for voting for Bishop Romney
Romney comes across as a gentleman and in control. He is incredibly enthusiastic and positive.
I couldn’t believe how great the Fox Forum was. For the first time I was actually able to understand where each candidate stood on the issues. It wasn’t all about sound bites. Tough questions, enlightening answers and meaningful exchanges between candidates. Could we just dispense with all those ridiculous so called debates and use this forum idea from here on out? Way to go Chris Matthews.
If only people dug a little deeper…
I am a resident of Massachusetts. I have seen first hand how what Romney did in this state. While he reduced taxes in some areas he also raised taxes in the form of fees for services. Last night Romney shrugged off fox’s question about fees claiming they only affected a small portion of the Massachusetts residents. What fees were raised? He raised the fee for a driver license, the fee to register a vehicle, the fee for an inspection sticker, the fees for setting up small businesses, and many more. The fees did affect the vast majority of Massachusetts residents.
Romney also claimed to cut government spending during his time in office. Well technically he did. He did so by not paying state employees or giving them any raises. The state employees were not paid the wages they were owed until after he left office. While paying the employees for work already done was inevitable, due to contract agreements, Romney was able to push off payment until after he was elected. He was able to make it seem like a cut in government spending while he was in office.
For a man who claimed knowledge of business and fiscal responsibility he did not show it while handling the Big Dig. The Boston area construction project that was to cost $2.6 billion, ended up costing $14.8 billion. While construction companies milked Massachusetts for everything it was worth Romney sat on the sidelines.
after being pushed around in the last two debates, romney took control sunday night….that was game, set, and match….an enjoyable evening, listening to the issues….
WIllis and Carl, Your anti-mormon rhetoric is seriously flawed. If you want to know the truth about the Mormons then go to mormon.org and check it out. If you want to know what the religion stands for ask somebody who is a mormon rather than blindly following the prescribed agenda of the bigoted protesters. As for VW Owens comment about there not being one “gottcha type question” about Mitt Romney. You obviously were not watching the part when Fox showed Romney’s “negative ads” and accused him of running a negative campaign and then refused to acknowledge McCain’s and Huckabee’s person attack ads. Romney, is the only candidate that can stand up against the heat. He’s been doing it from day one and will continue to do so.
The “Focus Group” is a farse. I’m not saying Mitt didn’t do well. I’m just saying don’t trust this group. The headline is the same guy is two NH focus groups. It’s the SAME guy. Go to youtube and watch/listen to the guy talk. Image at URL above.
To Ned:
I find it interesting that you decided to spend so much time deriding the religion of a candidate, but failed to talk about the issues facing America. I don’t want Romney (I like Obama), but I did not make my conclusion based on religion. I did it, again, based on the issues.
I suppose that it’s a pipe-dream for me to assume that folks are mature and intelligent enough out there to focus on the issues. But, I prefer to assume that, than to go where people like Ned tend to end up.
Hey Carl and everyone,
Maybe I’m missing something here that everyone else isn’t, BUT:
Assuming Romney takes second in NH, doesn’t that mean he has accumulated more votes than any other Republican so far…?
And many are suggesting he would have no chance if this situation were to play out?
Hmmmm interesting
Ned,
Yes you nailed it! You are a bigot! Religion has nothing to do with politics. By the tone of your post it is clear you are just a Mormon hater. You need to to get a life and accept the fact that Mitt is the guy who could beat Clinton and/or Obama. Remember we do live in the United States where freedom of religion is still a right last time I checked.
I thought Mitt Romney was the clear winner in both of the debates. Saturday all of the other candidates piled on him and he was still standing at the end – pretty impressive. Sunday he just outspoke and outshone all of them together. Huckabee and McCain came across as adolescent bullies and neither seemed at all presidential. Mitt Romney has the money to help his campaign because he has been successful in business, something that Washington desperately needs. His mormonism was irrelevant during his tenure as governor and would be irrelevant in Washington.
Who do you think you are kidding?
That “focus group” was a joke! A whole room full of “undecided” Republicans suddenly coalesced in unwavering support of Mitt Romney after he “clearly won” the debate. GET REAL! McCain WAS ahead in the polls, still IS ahead in the polls and overwhelmingly leads Romney among Independent voters in N.H.
Either you used a “jury duty” approach to finding participants for your “focus group” (i.e. scouring the countryside for people who have never heard any news about the candidates) or you are blatantly manipulating the facts. Come on, you should have at least made it look reasonable.
I would say that I’m going to stop watching FOX News, but I rarely watch it already – too dumbed down and sensationalistic. A word of advice, though; if you guys keep pushing the limit and getting ever more and more blatant and ridiculous you will lose all most the semi-retarded sheep who contribute so greatly to your ratings.
NUFF SAID!
NED AND WILLIS-I AM A MORMON, I GO TO THE TEMPLE, WAS A MORMON MISSIONARY FOR 2 YEARS IN TAIWAN, REGARDING YOUR COMMENTS AND THE ARTICLE IN THE NEW YORK TIMES,
IT IS WRONG. DO YOU BELIEVE LIBERAL THE LIBERAL NEWS TO SAY THE TRUTH?
WHY DON’T YOU ASK A MORMON FRIEND TO READ YOU OUR CHURCH’S 12TH ARTICLE OF FAITH. “WE BELIEVE IN SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE, AND IN HONORING THE LAW.”
THE BLOOD OATH QUOTE IS WRONG!-WE DO NOT DO THAT!!!!
BISHOP’S ARE NOT BOUND BY SUCH. THAT IS CRAZY AND RELIGIOUSLY BIGOTTED.
JESUS SAID”BY THEIR FRUIT YE SHALL KNOW THEM”
MITT HAS BEEN A FAITHFUL HUSBAND AND FATHER. HE LOVES AND RESPECTS HIS WIFE AND FAMILY.
THE FRUIT OF HIS LIFE IS GOOD!
NO MORE BIGOTTED ATTACKS!
YOU SOUND LIKE THE KKK!
Carl your political slight of hand and guilt by association ploy of including a seemingly unrelated comment regarding so-called ‘9-11 truth ’supporters supporting Dr. Paul is a disgrace to journalism. Fox journalists and reporters interested in truth should now resign. Fox is not news – it is a propaganda instrument of war machine. Blatant and low tech attacks like the one in this article do not go unnoticed. Fox is a snake. Advertisers beware, Fox is not truthful in their news , and will soon be lying about their ratings.
Mitt Romney has had a hard time getting his immigration message out. There is an elite consensus on mass immigration and nowhere is that more evident than in the elites who are in the media. And their elite agenda on immigration warps the coverage of the issue.
It’s been noted elsewhere that Fox chose to superimpose a graphic about what Romney had said in the past about McCain/Kennedy just as McCain was speaking about it, probably a first. But I won’t go into that here because I think this obsession with going back to find “gotcha” quotes does a profound disservice to the democratic process. What candidates have said and done in the past should take a back seat to first considering their current stated positions. If we like but doubt the sincerity of a candidate’s current position, then looking back is relevant. But if we don’t like what they’ve indicated as their positions in this campaign, that ought to be sufficient.
Romney has greatly clarified the immigration issue by explaining and elucidating the differences in an amazingly efficient way. In the debates and on the talk shows this weekend he effectively summarized the long standing battle over the word amnesty. While accepting that there is a semantic rationale for denying that what McCain and the others propose is amnesty in some strict definition of the word, he correctly notes that it is close enough to and will be considered that by many if not most people. Then he explained the difference between his and McCain’s proposals that form the basis of people’s views on the question of amnesty. If truth is related to journalism, Romney was far more journalistic than millions of words written by professional “journalists” over the last year.
I find it interesting that the push polling started up again after Mitt’s excellent performance in the Forum, when he was declared in a Fox headline within striking distance of McCain. What does that say? McCain says he didn’t pay for the push polling, but it appeared at a pretty strange time. And why isn’t the investigation into the push polling covered on the Fox website. And I have to agree with the people who think Huckabee may be gettiing a little too much coverage. Huckaburger indeed!
Romney clearly won the debate last night. Romney was convincing and professional. McCain seemed old and overly cheerful. Huckabee frankly is the real phony here. He wears his religion on his sleeve, and takes it off when it does not work for him. He complains about negative ads, but goes out and throws mud as well. He truly is a piece of work. Democrats would love nothing more than to have a McCain or Huckabee, because they fear Romney. Romney is the most Presidental and the others are simply old blood, with no new ideas. Romney has passion and energy. My Vote is for Romney.
[...] he won.” (Carl Cameron, “Mitt In The Middle,” FOX’s Cameron’s Corner, http://www.cameron.blogs.foxnews.com, Posted [...]
I agree with Previous posters… none of the so-called “pros” even dared to pick a winner- while all the “regular” voters were quick to say that Romney really destroyed all the others. Mitt is the man who should be our president.. what does the media have against him?
I know, I know, but I’m probably not the first to think this and just can’t help but say it . . . Senator McCain has a very striking first class wife, Cindi, who would make us proud to be our Country’s next First Lady and stand side by side with whom I believe would be an outstanding President of the United States. With that said, Senator McCain is profoundly qualified to be President – he’s got my vote.
lmd
Ned, really, you need to do a little more research and try to at least sound objective.
I happen to be a Mormon who appreciates Mormon senator Harry Reid more than Mitt. I am also leaning towards either Obama or Guiliani. But let me defend Mitt here in the name of my religion.
Yes, we do have a living prophet who serves as God’s mouthpiece, how does this differ from Huckabee’s living bible that would have at least as much if not more influence on what the man does in office than some 97 year old man in Utah? Or, why can’t we simply trust Mitt that he won’t be governed by the prophet like we trusted JFK that he wouldn’t be governed by the Pope? Oh, that’s right, we Mormons all swear blood oaths to enter the temple. Well, let me set the record straight: entering the temple to perform simple religious rituals requires a member to be devout. To keep the temple a place of proper worship we require members to prove their being devout by having them receive simple recommends. To get the temple recommend we require members to obey the commandments–don’t kill, commit adultery, etc. One of those requirements is answering yes to this question: Do you sustain the prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? In other words, do you listen and hearken to his counsel as the prophet? The church chooses not to let those who oppose the prophet into the temple. They can disagree, sure. They can even voice it. But if they want to enjoy the blessings of temple worship, they have to do what’s required to get it. Its the same damn principle behind driving a car: if you are ready to “worthy to drive it,” you can’t.
But what you fail to get is that we recognize the boundaries separating religion and politics. The question (which is a simple question requiring a simple answer, yes or no–not a blood oath) never has and never will imply that the prophet chooses or influences our politics. Sometimes he and the apostles release a statement urging us to vote and be careful of our vote, but that’s it. Mitt has not sworn to follow the prophet over the government, and never will.
Carl-
I am surprised your comments were so positive re: Mitt in this peice considering much you clearly dislike him. Despite Mitt’s clear win last night, your comments afterwards were hardly positive. I thought Fox News reporting had more to do with the truth than our own personal like or dislike of a candidate. From now on try and keep your personal tastes out of your reporting. Appreciate it!
I think Romney did a great job last night. My husband and I both thought he came out on top by expressing a positive direction for the country, and he gave us confidence that he is the candidate to effect change in Washington. We agree that the country faces some major challenges ahead, and Romney projected confidence in his ability to face and solve the problems that will present themselves.
I don’t think he is the “darling” of the media, so he does not receive as much positive press as some of the other candidates… Anyway, we enjoyed the Forum and look forward to watching all of the candidates in the future debates.
McCain is a one issue wonder. His whole campaign is about the military and the war. If you think that the war on terror is the only issue that the next president will have to face when elected, then by all means vote for him. If, on the other hand, you believe that the economy, dependence on foreign oil, education, etc.. are important issues as well you had better look hard at another candidate.
In the Sunday night debate when asked about taxes McCain responded by talking about how much money he saved the tax payers by finding corruption in military spending. He even views taxes and the economy within the context of the military.
McCain really beliieves he is running for Secretary of Defense. Everything he thinks about and everything he focuses on is military based.
If you want to extend the war in Iraq and you want the next presidency to be focused on war and conflict then McCain is your man.
I have to laugh at the comments regarding Mitt’s religion and how it will play a part in the White House if he is elected. I have not heard one word from Romney regarding his religion except to say he’s not the mormon representative.
Wasn’t it Huckabee who said they needed to have a good ole tent revival and convert the folks of NH? If Romney came close to making such a statement, he would be persecuted to the fullest!
Huckabee seems to be the only one relying on religion to get ahead. Which is surprising since he hasn’t acted Christian. On the debate from ABCnews, did anyone notice Huckabee look to McCain while ripping into Romney? I sure did. I doubt Christ would approve.
Carl,
I watched the entire debate last night and had a very difficult time understanding why Fox News and Chris Wallace would host such a one sided debate. I have been a loyal fan of Fox News since the beginning. I have watched daily since cox cable began broadcasting the network. In all those years of viewing different programs, I have never seen such a transparently biased event. In my view, Fox News and specifically Chris Wallace have put themselves out on a thin limb in order to try to save Mitt Romney’s campaign. Almost every question Wallace asked to the other candidates had “Romney said this”… or something similar! BY THE MIDDLE OF THE DEBATE, I WAS EXPECTING WALLACE TO STAND UP AND GIVE HIS CHAIR TO ROMNEY SO THAT HE COULD GRILL THE OTHER CANDIDATES! At least that would have been honest. Not since the CNN UTUBE debate have I seen such a low point in the nomination process. In the end, the debate did nothing to change my my view of the republican candidates. I’m a Newt fan and have not picked a candidate as of yet. However, I believe Newt or for that matter Reagan wouldn’t have needed Fox or Wallace to hold such a dishonest event inorder to win the Republican nomination.
In the end, we republicans have to nominate a member from this pool of candidates. In my view, the candidates should be judged by their records, efforts and merits. All of the candidates have something positive to offer to our party and the nation. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for Chris Wallace’s performance in last night’s debate! He and Fox News have a great deal of work to do in order to rebuild the trust and respect they once deserved.
Unbelieveable…….simply unbelievable. The stupidity of the American voter never ceases to amaze me. I can’t believe so many people would buy into the biased campaigning Fox is doing on behalf of Romney and want to elect Bill Clinton 2.0. Make that 2.5. Hillary is probably 2.0. I wouldn’t buy a used car from Romney.
Awesome job, Mitt!!!! It’s only a matter of time!
Since when is it wrong to be apart of two focus groups? Don’t all you conspiracy theorists have more interesting things to “uncover” than a citizen who takes his civic duty of voting seriously. Good grief.
Romney is the best choice as POTUS for the future of this country. I think a Romney/Petraeus ticket (the smartest business man and the smartest military man) would give this country the best and brightest and strongest future.
Ned ,
You’re right on my friend, and for the people that think that you should put the issues bfore your God,pray for them….My Bible tells me that the Government will rest on His shoulders,,…I don’t have to explain the definition of His do I……
Clearly the liberal press wants Obama and he is rocking. His youthful charismatic message of change will take all the old-fogey republicans to the cleaners.
All, that is, except for Romney. This is why the libereal bias is bent on taking out Romney. Take out Romney and Obama takes the White House.
Remember how the press took out Romney’s father. We got Nixon instead. That turned out well didn’t it?
For a man who claimed knowledge of business and fiscal responsibility he did not show it while handling the Big Dig. The Boston area construction project that was to cost $2.6 billion, ended up costing $14.8 billion. While construction companies milked Massachusetts for everything it was worth Romney sat on the sidelines.
Good Point ..Ted Kennedys ear mark for Bean Town . Mitt is no more than Teddys Lap Dog . Wait untill he comes south. Liberals don`t do well in the south .Huckabee will hand him his hat in SC
Ron Paul is still going to make a huge comeback. Just wait and see.
The truth about Mitt….
http://www.therevelationpress.com
Ned, I appreciate your opinion and see where much of the world’s perspective of our beliefs as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints could come from. I can see where your views of our practices would be askew simply because we haven’t let enough people know what we believe and how we believe. It is simple for us and in no way threatening to the way of life for the people of the world. We only want to add to the betterment of society in a positive way.
The NYT article about the Mormons contains incorrect or incomplete information about us. These misleading comments are communicated in such a way to paint a picture of confusion. Mitt Romney WAS a bishop and has since been released of this calling. He is not sworn to listen to the Living Prophet in any matter of state, because the church will not and does not command or control any state function.
The beliefs of the Mormon Religion are on the internet (www.lds.org, http://www.mormon.org). If someone wants to know the LDS beliefs they need to do their research. Mass media only provides a “sellable story” in order to promote their station or their newspaper. Propaganda of this nature has been around since time immemorial and it only muddies the waters of truth.
Religion and beliefs should play no part in the choice or service of any president. JFK was very clear when he stated this in an all-too reminiscent inquisition like those of old, where the Spanish Inquisition persecuted, tortured and murdered many different organizations, religions, and peoples in an attempt to root out “heresy” among the countries of its influence. JFK stated that there was absolutely no business of state that would be dictated by the Pope, and would give no order, rule or credence to the Christian Association’s requests as they were ludicrous.
Even Jews in Italy, Southern France, Spain and Portugal were forced to convert to Catholicism to live. These “inquisitions” and the bringing of religious beliefs into question as a requisite to the presidency are childish.
Even the Jews have their own “secrets” or sacred beliefs. They administer their prayers and other beliefs according to the laws that were and are established by the Torah. Even when davening (praying) they strap boxes to their heads and arms, and wear sacred clothing that represents their covenants and laws, what are they, what are the covenants that they make? These covenants and other beliefs are outlined and communicated plainly in Torah. Many of the Mormon beliefs and rites are patterned after the original Jewish rites and beliefs. We have the same purpose, to approach deity in sacred reverence by following these rites in covenant to reach a state of happiness by obeying God’s laws.
I understand both worlds. I know both laws and accept their totality, yet these have no place in government. The government is “…of the people, for the people, by the people….” We are the government, and it is our diversity and the respect which we should have toward each other that helps maintain a balance of all things. If there is not that balance, one power tends to sway the other. We need this balance! As faithful members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we accept the obligation to follow the laws of God the laws of government because “We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law” (http://scriptures.lds.org/a_of_f/1/12#12). It is our heritage to follow the rule of law, even to the point of finding protection under the law.
I believe that people need to visit our sites to find out who we are, and what we are about. Come to our churches; ask your Mormon neighbors about our beliefs. We believe that we can obtain the blessings of heaven by obedience to ALL law. We do not swear blood oaths to follow absolutely or blindly, but rather learn for ourselves the meaning of truth and try to live by it under protection and sanction of the law. There is nothing degrading, secret or morbid about our temple rites, but rather a symbolic instruction, administered in much the same way as the prophets in the Old Testament taught, even Jesus himself taught in this way. This teaching is symbolic of promises and covenants God made, makes and will make with his children in accordance with their willingness to grow and change, throwing out things that have no consequence to health, or spiritual growth, whilst still compliant with all governmental law.
These covenants guide our moral judgment only and give us the option to lift others, bring them above their challenges and move progressively to the betterment of all society, toward a brighter, tolerant and peaceful future. It includes people of all beliefs, ideas, and philosophies. Life would not be as beautiful without that diversity. All opinions build history and cohesion. We cannot band together as a country until we accept our differences and move past our idiosyncrasies and work toward a collective, industrial (meaning technological and working society), tolerant idealism. It cannot work if we keep blaming everyone else or anything else for our own problems.
Accountability and responsibility are the most important things that we can work for as Americans. It will require someone willing to step up and stand accountable for the actions of our nation and our people. It will then require accountability and responsibility to be placed on the people of this nation to overcome our greatest difficulties; hatred, bigotry, intolerance, persecution (of any kind), and reliance on government to provide our necessities. We have two hands and two legs, our mind, and the physical strength that we have in our body. This is what will bring this nation back around. We need to care for each other, and stop worrying about race, religion or anything else that may be a cause for argument. We need to align behind the constitution and move forward to eliminate laws and programs that eliminate our right to “…life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
I enjoy conversations of this nature. It brings a better understanding to all of our beliefs and political idealisms. The Republicans, Democrats, and Independents in Utah are no different than the rest of the world in the fact that we have our differing opinions and points of contention in views of government. Yes the Republican party in history did pursue to wipe out the Mormons in antiquity, but since then I believe that there is much support and ideals that come from all conservatives and liberals that will bring compromise to us all. Thank you.
All these mormon comments are getting ridiculous. Romney has already proven that he will not allow his personal faith and beliefs to interfere with his job to represent his constituents. He has done the same as many other national politicians and REPRESENTED the people who elected them. Mitt governed a very liberal state in a conservative manner, yet he did not go in preaching fire and brimstone to a state that wants abortion and same sex marriage, even though he claimed all along he was personally (meaning it wouldn’t be a choice he would make for his own personal life) against these issues. He did what his constituents wanted him to do. Wow, imagine that in a politician!!!
Poor JFK had to go through this ordeal too. Everyone was scared to death that the pope was going to run our country. It’s sad that so many people didn’t learn a lesson from that experience.
In 2007 during Sunday School classes, the LDS church studied the New Testament. I teach that class to 14 and 15 year olds. What I taught to them was nothing different than what I was taught when I was that age attending your typical on the corner christian church in Oklahoma.
I challenge any of you anti-mormons to find any of our doctrine that is refuted by the New Testament. You can’t. There is nothing that we believe that the Holy Bible says “no way” to.
Please keep in mind that you won’t find a mormon who will condemn you or your beliefs, you won’t find a mormon who would publically slander you, you won’t find a mormon who would sign an “extermination” order against you (as the state of Missouri did and the State of Illionois threatened to do to us), you won’t find a mormon who would turn their backs on a human being. Yes, we follow the prophet to help us become more Christ like. That is what our prophet is here to do.
It’s amazing how the media is trying to select the winners. After watching both Saturday’s and Sunday’s debates you would think the media watched something else?
In my opinion Romney simply cleaned their clocks both days, and couldn’t have looked better when being attacked by everyone on Saturday. He stayed cool, presidential and responded to every wise crack, and smirk. They honestly looked very hollow allow side of him.
In Sunday’s debate it seemed that they wanted no part of him, they were afraid to engage Romney. While Romney was discussing serious issues, the others simply looked like they were out of their league and chose to keep quiet. It was very telling. Like deer frozen with headlights.
I was a solid Rudy supporter, however Romney has won me over with his debates. We finally have someone with something very rare in politics “Ideas and plans” on how to fix things.
I truly respect McCain he is no doubt a hero, however this guy Romney is head and shoulders above everyone else. It’s a shame that they will be bitter after all this is over, because they would make one heck of team come November! With Huckabee in administration too!
Lisa,
I realize where you’re coming from but for those of us that try to put God first before anything, even though we somtimes fail miserably, whether or not we are honoring God by our decisions does matter…but not only to me or us ..I personally even though I don’t know any of you am concerned about our priorities….Its all in his word and is what we’ll someday answer for…If you feel that strongly about voting for Romney, you have the right to do so,and to tell the rest of us why….I don’t dislike Mit Romney, the person, but what he is involved in is more than most of us know and how it actuall stacks up to the canon of Scriture is another thing and if your faith is important to you its worth checking out…don’t just take my word for it but by all means check it out, from an independent source…try the Bible for one
Carl, I think Ned is way off on the Mormon thing. Blood oaths and secrecy? Pleese. Sounds like you should be writing a fictional adventure novel. I am so sick of the way the media plays Iowa and New Hampshire. Mitt is clearly the republican favorite nationally. And qualified to run a country he is if it’s anything like how he runs his business. Dem’s want Mike Huckabee to win because he is so beatable, and though I’d support John McCain, he’s got a lot of baggage, along with the rest of them. Most Libritarians say Ron Paul is actually hurting their cause, but he does ring true on a few of his points. Just not enough to be PRESIDENT. Mitt is the only one I think that can beat the Dem’s and that’s what they should be focusing on. Especially Ron Paul-give it up already Ron!!
We get a lot or reference to ask a Mormona bout his religion, why not an independent source…if you want to see the other side of it try saintsalive.com
Wow Lisa! Well said…
I have known many Mormons in my life, and they are good, honest people. They have strong families and are very patriotic. I don’t undestand the bigotry demonstrated by the press and people who have not taken the time to learn the truth about them. Mitt Romney has been consistent throughout his life as an honest, hard-working man who is true to family and country. He has been extremely successful in all areas of his life. Is he to good to be true, or is he absolutely the best candidate to come forward in the last 20 years? Definitely the latter!
Ron,
If somebody were to break into your car,and two Hrs later you caught up with Him,and asked Him if he broke into your car, what would you expect him to say…I suggest you look at saintsalive.com,and find out what an x mormon has to say….might be worth the trouble
If half truths, aren’t regarded as lies maybe Romney, could be reputable…..but claming to have cut spending, with the avenue he took to do it doesn’t ring favorable to me.To hold back wages until you’re out of office,so it doesn’t reflect on your record, doesn’t set well with me….And to make a remark about the fees He implemented,as only affecting a few,is stupid,or doesn’t anyone in Mass.drive,or aren’t there any small buisnesses in he state…Half truths about what you have done are one thing and half truths about the other candidates are another…but when evaluated they’re all lies
Romney is clearly a viable candidate. He finished strong in both Iowa and New Hampshire. The media was all over the 3% difference in the results of the Democratic race, but has ignored the very close 5% difference between Romney and McCain. It is time for the media to stop underreporting Romney’s strength in this campaign. The media needs to stop trying to influence the election process.
Ron
The issue you have with people when they mention Bishop Romney has prompted you to quote the Bible….Have you read the part that say’s “If your ashamed of me before men ‘ll be ashamed of you before the Father, that doesn’t speak well to Mr Romney’s speech…or the part that talks about the plagues if we add or subtract to the word of God…Mike has ben accused of wearing His faith on His cuff…….well I guess He’s not ahamed……
Carl
I met you during the Bush campaign and really liked you but now after the way you treated RON PAUL, I have changed my mind about you!! SHAME ON YOU CARL!
Mitt Romney’s the man. I’m sick of this religious fighting, too. Get over yourselves.
As an excommunicated Mormon, a father, and a military man I must say I have heard enough. I will vote for Mitt, partially because he is Mormon. I know what the church is about, and although I might not have been able to follow all of their teachings, I will tell you honestly a few things. No blood oaths, that was total hogwash. The bit about not adding or subtracting from the scriptures, well that is actually mentioned in 2 places in the bible and one of those places much earlier than Revelations, and lets not forget that when the Bible was originally translated their were many subtractions, I challenge any of you to find the book of Wars.
I’m tired of dishonesty in politics. No Mitt is not perfect, but I believe he is the best chance we as a country have to get out of our financial and political troubles.
Super “congrats” on the “super” job that you guys at FOX are doing on the election coverages. You are not only “numero uno” here in the islands, but obviously, throughout the nation. Super job. Our preditions are that our former “local boy”, Sen. Barack Obama, is are chosen DNC for the Office of the President of these United States of America. Clinton, and her entourage need not bother coming to our fair islands, cause for once, we’re going to make a difference.
“Imua (Forward/Charge), Senator Obama”. Will be sending some photos during our convention this week.
By the way, any chance on you guys sending, Marth M., Megyn K. Laurie D., Edie H., to cover the election results and festivities. They have, besides, O’Reily, a huge fan base throughout the State, and we would welcome their presence with a lot of aloha.
Malama pono…..a hui hou………….Kanekaialii
