McCain Downplays Expectations in Michigan.
by Carl Cameron
There are polls aplenty and each campaign can find reason for optimism. Check here to see the latest Real Clear Politics polls. Michigan is a Romney/McCain fight. The subject is manufacturing job losses. Romney has family history in the state, his father was governor. McCain won the 2000 Michigan primary. McCain has momentum coming out of NH, but knows he can’t afford to let the McCainiacs get complacent.

John McCain has already shown that he is just a wolf in sheeps clothing. Opposing Bush’s tax cuts, thumbing his nose at the honest, tax paying Americans by trying to push the amnesty bill against our will…….maybe he will end up Hillary’s running mate because the more I listen to him and try to make some sense of what he is saying, the more he looks like a disillusioned Democrat. He seems to have perfected the textbook Washington way of answering questions, which is “talk around in circles and every now and take credit for things people can relate to, whether it’s the truth or not”. He has no plan and no vision other than “Business as usual” in Washington. People, please don’t let that happen.
Vote Romney!!!!!!!!!! The only candidate capable of restoring America.
Kurt Collins
It’s a close race between McCain and Romney but what about all those Independents and Democrats who have NOONE on the ballot to vote for. This state ballot is verrry strange. WHY did the Republicans in the first place allow Independents and some say even Democrats to vote in their Primary…unbelievable…in California the Republicans are smarter, you have to be a registered Republican to vote in the Republican Primary. Of course, we are step-children. The media in the November election always calls the president before our polls even close. This will only be a true election when everyone votes on the same super day and everyone has to declare their party…crossing party lines to muddy votes shouldn’t be allowed. Romney won the Republican vote in NH…only lost because of the Independents that voted for McCain…now who are they voting for in the November election? Anyone they chose…maybe a Democrat.
It’s amazing how soon people forgot that John McCain is as bad as Teddy Kennedy on immigration.
Sen. McCain took 37 percent of the New Hampshire Republican primary votes Tuesday, winning that state’s contest. Mitt Romney finished six points back, at 31 percent, in second place. McCain had shown poorly in Iowa. He tied for third place with Fred Thompson, each with just 13 percent. Romney finished second in Iowa, with 25 percent, while Mike Huckabee won 34 percent.
Take a quick trip down memory lane. Less than a year ago, Sen. McCain was one of the leaders crafting a “comprehensive” mass amnesty bill behind closed doors. He, along with Kennedy, Obama and Clinton, blocked every attempt to amend the bill with any measures to decrease the damage it would have done.
His pro-amnesty stance nearly tanked his presidential candidacy last summer and dried up his fundraising. And despite his denials, Sen. McCain has spoken openly in favor of amnesty repeatedly. And his position — even after last summer — still favors mass amnesty for virtually every illegal alien who is already in this country, as many as a 12 — 15 million of them.
McCain publicly embraced amnesty for years before it caused him to get his political head handed to him. “Amnesty has to be an important part because there are people who have lived in this country for 20, 30 or 40 years, who have raised children here and pay taxes here and are not citizens. That has to be a component of it,” he told a Tucson newspaper in 2003. “I think we can set up a program where amnesty is extended to a certain number of people who are eligible and at the same time make sure that we have some control over people who come in and out of this country…”
At the time of the 2006 debate of the Senate amnesty bill, McCain told a rally that illegal aliens have “grasped the lowest rung of our ladder. They want to rise, and we should let them. Let them come out of the shadows, pay a fine, stay employed, pay taxes, and earn their citizenship.”
Now, he says he’ll go along with some undefined border security measures, attempting to redefine words. But ultimately, he insists on radical legalization of most illegals.
He tried his “spin” at the YouTube debate: ” . . . [W]e never proposed amnesty.” He dissembled again in New Hampshire at Sunday’s debate: “I have never, ever supported amnesty and never will.”
McCain sets up a straw-man argument about either deport them all or legalize them all as the only two alternatives.
On May 30, McCain told FOX’s Bill O’Reilly, “You’ve got two choices here, Bill. You either round up and deport 12 million people and I know of no one who thinks that’s a good idea or practicable. Or you make sure that you do everything possible to make sure that they pay a very heavy price for having acted illegally and breaking our laws.”
In June, he told a Miami audience, “The most difficult problem is what to do about the twelve million or more undocumented workers who live and work here now. No critic of our bill has offered a serious proposal to round up all these millions, many of whom have children born in this country, and ship them back to their countries of origin. There is simply no practical way to do that, and most Americans understand that …”
Now, scrambling back, McCain says, “There are about 2 million people here illegally who have committed crimes; those people should be deported immediately. We can’t round up the other 10 million people and deport them all at once, so you are going to have to go step by step.” By “step by step,” he means legalize the vast majority of illegals, but start with some lame “enforcement” and kick out criminal aliens.
McCain remains coy on what enforcement measures he’d support. Judging by his bill, a few more border guards, some border fencing and a “virtual fence,” but little else. He told Vanity Fair, “I’ll build the goddamned fence if they want it.” Reuters quoted him at a recent New Hampshire meeting that he means by border security “walls in urban areas, through vehicle barriers, with cameras and sensors.”
All this is merely process — stuff and personnel — not results. Instead of building some fencing and hiring some agents, why not set goals of reducing illegal entry to a trickle? Or reducing the illegal population in four years by 75 percent through both removals and enforcement-driven attrition?
By any reasonable definition, McCain’s recipe constitutes amnesty. It allows nearly all illegal aliens to remain permanently in America. It lets them obtain a permanent resident visa and naturalize five years later. It rewards them with the job they came and stole, taxpayer-funded benefits and programs, tax credits, welfare and Social Security. It allows them to sponsor distant relatives and start their own migration chains.
The Senate bill, S. 1348, by McCain, Kennedy and Harry Reid included many loopholes and perpetually renewable Z visas for illegal aliens. The “background check” on an illegal had to be done in one business day, or else the government had to issue the amnesty visa. Flimsy “evidence” like a buddy’s “affidavit” would satisfy McCain in order to qualify someone for a Z visa. His bill gave illegals in-state tuition.
McCain’s bill allowed amnestees to renew a 4-year Z visa if they merely “attempt to gain an understanding of the English language.” That means “taking” (not passing) the naturalization test (whose standards of English acquisition are woefully inadequate). It also accepted getting “on a waiting list for English classes” (not taking or passing the course). Bottom line, amnestied aliens would remain deficient in English.
What about paying a “very heavy price?” McCain’s bill imposed just $1,000 as the penalty. There were up to $2,000 in various fees, but hardly enough to be regarded as much of a fine. Plus, the $1,000 didn’t have to be paid until after the meaningless “triggers” took effect. S. 1348 didn’t require payment of any back taxes; its last-ditch revision, S. 1639, added a tax requirement for getting a green card.
McCain rejects an attrition-through-enforcement strategy. He ultimately wants both mass legalization of illegal aliens and increases in legal immigration. He’d agree to deporting a couple million criminal aliens, but insists on letting the rest of the illegal population stay on.
In short, McCain has one of the worst grades of any Republican Senator concerning immigration. His overall career and recent Americans for Better Immigration grades are both Ds. On amnesty, he earns F. His congressional record on immigration ABI calls “abysmal.”
To build an immigration record that’s worse than Huckabee’s and even Giuliani’s takes some doing, but that’s what McCain has done. McCain’s record is more in line with Democrat candidates.
By contrast, Fred Thompson flat-out promises to veto any amnesty bill. At the YouTube debate, he said, “Yes. I will pledge that.” He then got specific on what enforcement means to him: “We’ve go to strengthen the border, we’ve got to enforce the border, we’ve got to punish the employers who will not obey the law, and we’ve go to eliminate sanctuary cities and say to sanctuary cities, ‘If you continue this, we’re going to cut off federal funding for you. You’re not going to do it with federal money.’”
The Atlanta newspaper quoted Thompson’s reasonable enforcement approach: “They set up a false choice — either we get giant busloads of people tomorrow, and round them all up, or we have to grant amnesty. Attrition by enforcement is what makes the most sense.”
Mitt Romney rejects amnesty, as well. His platform states, “Governor Romney opposes amnesty or any special path to citizenship for those here illegally. He opposed each version of the McCain-Kennedy legislation as the wrong approach and a form of amnesty. Amnesty did not work 20 years ago, and it will not work today.”
The Washington Post, as the Senate debated McCain’s amnesty bill last summer, reported: “Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney advocated a policy of attrition to deal with the more than 12 million immigrants who are in the United States illegally, insisting that they can be slowly repatriated simply by enforcing current law or changing provisions of a controversial bipartisan plan pending in the Senate.”
Any American who cares about immigration issues, who opposes amnesty, who favors common sense over appeasement of foreign lawbreakers should not consider McCain an ally.
I hope Republicans will remember John McCains voting record and how he has joined the Democrats in voting on issues like Immigration, campaign finance and a list of others that have worked against Americans. In my opinion John McCain is what we call a RINO,(Republican In Name Only).
I respect John McCain for his service to our country, however he is NOT the strong tiger on national security everyone thinks he is. I mean the man would not even consider water-boarding a terrorist to get info that could save countless American lives; a terrorist now, not a uniformed soldier fighting in a specific country’s army. His arguement against it is if we did, then the enemy would start torturing our soldiers. Start? John, wake up from your nap pal, our enemies are already cutting heads off, hanging and burning bodies, dragging them behind vehicles, and God knows what else. Look at all the torture rooms found. Surely he knows this is going on, so what is really the true story on his position?
When it comes to illegal immigration, all you can say is his true stances and past history in dealing with this is dismal!
Well, then you got Huckabee with his record on illegal immigration, higher taxes and bigger government, and belief that our foreign policy is arrogant. Plus now he is bragging in Michigan about his close ties to the unions. Kinda sounds like something a democrat would campaign on; or is he just doing it in Michigan?
You know, I have to put my trust for the future of our national security in a man who speaks with substance, who stands on his principles, looks you in the eye and tells you straightforward what’s on his mind. Fred Thompson is this man. He’s well thought out, a great communicator, and rock solid on his principles. Go to http://www.fred08.com/ and look around at his white papers and speeches to make up your own mind. Then tell me who you think should lead us through these dangerous and uncertain times as our President and Commander-in-Chief for the next 8 years, Fred Thompson.
Mitt Romney has the least chance of swinging independent voters and winning the General Election. I am a Gulianni supporter and my wife is a Huckabee supporter, but we are both voting for John McCain in the Michigan primary to help get Romney out of the race.
I know that voting for Gulianni or Huckabee are wasted votes in Michigan, so MY WIFE AND I ARE VOTING FOR JOHN MCCAIN IN MICHIGAN TO MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE!
Guliainni will make his stand in Florida against McCain, but hopefully without Romney’s negative ads financed with Romney’s personal $$$. George Bush stole the 2000 election with negative ads and look at the mess our country is in now because of him. We don’t need another rich guy buying the election with negative ads! We don’t need negative Romney ads in this campaign anymore. STOP ROMNEY!
I hate to say it but, Mac is just to old and his record just plain sucks! Mitt is a bit stiff but is a self made millionaire, (that pretty much speaks for itself). Mitt obviously knows how to put a winning team together to make things happen——which is exactly what the White House needs, a good enma with revamping of staff!!!
Mac, we like ya but your going to lose Michigan, sorry man!
karl,
it would really be nice if you would stop saying this is a do or die election for mitt romney in MI.
the facts are this:
1. he has more delegates than any of the other candidates even finishing first, and second twice.
2. the reason mccain won in NH is because he had indepdenents and dems voting for him. it was an open primary.
3. if you would check the numbers, very few republican voters have voted.
4. if mccain wins in MI it won’t be because of rep voters it will be because dems and independents voted for him, thus denying those of us who are real conservative republicans an opportunity to vote for the candidate of our choice.
5. as a wife and mom, i will never cast a vote for mccain or huckabee. it is obvious that you and many tv pundits arepushing both these candidates down our throats. I’ll sit home or write in my choice.
6. why not ask mccain about his bills he’s signed onto in the senate?
7. why not ask huckabee why he left the ministry?
8. stop asking softball questions of mccain and huckabee.
i use to like watching you but i will no longer do so. when you come on, i will turn you off.
I too am hopeful that Republicans will remember John McCains voting record and how he has joined the Democrats in voting on issues like Immigration, campaign finance and a list of others that have worked against Americans. He has been in Washington too long as he never really says anything but speaks in generalities. I’m also getting tired of hearing his “My friends” phrase–we are not his friends, he doesn’t know us, and his voting record proves he doesn’ t even listen to us. Although I respect his stellar military record I don’t believe he is the one to turn Washington around.
Mitt, on the other hand, has the experience, intelligence, vision and values to lead this country.
Go Mitt!!
Let me start off by stating that I’m not from Michigan and I AM supporting Mitt Romney for President. I would think that as a citizen of Michigan (Democrat or Republican) that voting for Mitt Romney would be a NO-BRAINER.
Romney is A NATIVE SON, GREW UP IN MICHIGAN, and has DEEP ROOTS THERE. With economic conditions the way they are in Michigan, Wouldn’t it be better for the citizens of Michigan to have someone in the White house that has STRONG TIES and has your INTEREST AT HEART! NONE of the other candidates have this type of relationship with your state.
Maybe this is a selfish way of looking at it, but when will MICHIGAN have another chance to have this kind of influence in the White house?
Cindy McCain was addicted to painkillers and stole drugs from her own medical charity! Is this the first lady you want in the White House!!!
Mitt Romney is the right man and has the right woman supporting him each step of the way!
For the last time! Michigan is not a must win!! As long as he comes to a competitive second place he will still be winning in delegates! Get the facts straight!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nontheless i hope he wins
Hey Bob-Michigan……………
You forget one thing in this election. Unlike the past, when you vote you have to ‘declare’ by marking a box and then you are given a Dem or Republican ballot. However, which ever one you ‘declare’, your name is sent to that party HQ database. My uncle is a long time DEM, who’s turned off by their Primaries, yet he’s not switching over because he does not want to be on MI Republican’s list……….two things that are looking to hugely effect John-boy. One is they are projecting 20% turnout(that will hurt McCain) and secondly, they (pollsters) are saying there will be farless cross-overs because ‘declaring’.
YOu have DEMs Detroit representative Lamar Lemons telling Dems to vote for Huckabee to screw things up like he admits doing in 2000 for McCain to then embars. Gov. Engler’s support for Bush. Then you have the KOS nuts telling their ‘flock’ on website to vote Romney to drag out Republican primaries…..
They will probably equal out……………………A STAT I saw yesterday in a poll could be trouble for McCain (if poll is actually right)………….It said that in Detroit specifically, Romney had a 2-1 advantage. Thats huge, because that was a John Stronghold in 2000……Romney will already get good numbers from chunks of West side, Oakland County and St. Clair County, others. Those places always tend to go for the most traditional conservative Republican (which McCain aint!!)….so if you watch media tomorrow, keep any eye on Detroit numbers……………….could paint the picture.
Go Mitt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have to heed the remarks of the Governor Of Mass that preceded Old slick Mitt,She said that Romney will say anything to make himself look good,I guess that means that the 700 million dollar per yr tax increases, and fees only affected a few of the people in Mass…..That was Romney’s response when posed the question on one of the debatesaboutthe fees and taxes, but this latest news article where the former Governor made her remarks sheds a different light on things verses the propaganda floating out of the Romney camp….The news report was on the Fox web yesterday
Its probably not a do or die situation,in Mi for Mitt.the man was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and can’trelate to the people that have to really work for a living,as is seen by the things He’s done,inMass, that the moderators on the debates have been purposely overlooking….I come from the Anthracite region of Pa where we worked to keep most of you warm for many yrs,and watched people Like Mr Romney do the things like He’s done in Mass and then say it only affected,a few….. The things He Did in Mass.,wouldn’t have affeted the people in his circle, but then when you can spend millions out of your own pocket to run a camppaign of half truths, there aern’t many in your circle….so what he did, actually affected the mass majority….don’t need what He offers because He can’t relate……He also carries baggage that’s getting heavier with everystate He travels to,half truths and false promises run into each other after a while, and become very heavy
There’s a reason some of John McCain’s conservative supporters avoid discussing his record. They want to talk about his personal story, his position on the surge, his supposed electability. But whenever the rest of his career comes up, the knee-jerk reply is to characterize the inquiries as attacks.
The McCain domestic record is a disaster. To say he fought spending, most particularly earmarks, is to nibble around the edges and miss the heart of the matter. For starters, consider:
McCain-Feingold — the most brazen frontal assault on political speech since Buckley v. Valeo.
McCain-Kennedy — the most far-reaching amnesty program in American history.
McCain-Lieberman — the most onerous and intrusive attack on American industry — through reporting, regulating, and taxing authority of greenhouse gases — in American history.
McCain-Kennedy-Edwards — the biggest boon to the trial bar since the tobacco settlement, under the rubric of a patients’ bill of rights.
McCain-Reimportation of Drugs — a significant blow to pharmaceutical research and development, not to mention consumer safety (hey Rudy, pay attention, see link).
And McCain’s stated opposition to the Bush 2001 and 2003 tax cuts was largely based on socialist, class-warfare rhetoric — tax cuts for the rich, not for the middle class. The public record is full of these statements. Today, he recalls only his insistence on accompanying spending cuts.
As chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, McCain was consistently hostile to American enterprise, from media and pharmaceutical companies to technology and energy companies.
McCain also led the Gang of 14, which prevented the Republican leadership in the Senate from mounting a rule change that would have ended the systematic use (actual and threatened) of the filibuster to prevent majority approval of judicial nominees.
And then there’s the McCain defense record.
His supporters point to essentially one policy strength, McCain’s early support for a surge and counterinsurgency. It has now evolved into McCain taking credit for forcing the president to adopt General David Petreaus’s strategy. Where’s the evidence to support such a claim?
Moreover, Iraq is an important battle in our war against the Islamo-fascist threat. But the war is a global war, and it most certainly includes the continental United States, which, after all, was struck on 9/11. How does McCain fare in that regard?
McCain-ACLU — the unprecedented granting of due-process rights to unlawful enemy combatants (terrorists).
McCain has repeatedly called for the immediate closing of Guantanamo Bay and the introduction of al-Qaeda terrorists into our own prisons — despite the legal rights they would immediately gain and the burdens of managing such a dangerous population.
While McCain proudly and repeatedly points to his battles with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who had to rebuild the U.S. military and fight a complex war, where was McCain in the lead-up to the war — when the military was being dangerously downsized by the Clinton administration and McCain’s friend, former Secretary of Defense Bill Cohen? Where was McCain when the CIA was in desperate need of attention? Also, McCain was apparently in the dark about al-Qaeda like most of Washington, despite a decade of warnings.
My fingers are crossed that at the next debate, either Fred Thompson or Mitt Romney will find a way to address McCain’s record. (Mike Huckabee won’t, as he is apparently in the tank for him.)
No on Illegal Immigration-Hence NO on McCain and Huckabee
We don’t need a tax increase to help pay for Social Security, health care and education for illegals
BY THE WAY, CAN WE REALLY TRUST A CAREER POLITITIAN WHO VOTED AGAINST THE BUSH TAX CUTS AND STILL DEFENDS HIS VOTE….WHILE HE AT THE SAME TIME SAYS “THEY NEED TO BE MADE PERMANANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MCCAIN-NO THANKS
ALSO, “BY THEIR FRUIT YE SHALL KNOW THEM” DO YOU REALLY THINK HUCKABEE IS TELLING THE TRUTH? “I AM PULLING MY NEGATIVE AD IN IOWA AGAINST MITT ROMNEY EVERYONE, BUT I HAVE CALLED THIS NEWS CONFERENCE TO SHOW IT TO THE MEDIA, JUST THIS ONCE” ARE YOU KIDDING ME??????????????? THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS!!!!!!!!
YES to ending tax on our SAVINGS (Interest) with Romney’s Plan to lower the interest and Capital Gains tax to ZERO for everyone earning less than 200K per year.
YES TO A MAN WHO HAS ENOUGH MONEY AND DOES NOT NEED TO BE PRESIDENT. ONE WHO REPRESENTED OUR NATION WITH HONOR DURING THE OLMYPICS.
YES TO ONE WHO ACTUALLY DID GET HEALTH CARE PASSED FOR ALL IN HIS STATE WITHOUT USING ANY NEW MONEY. HE DID IT AND NO ONE ELSE HAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT OTHER REPUBLICAN COULD HAVE DONE BETTER GOING INTO THE LIONS DEN OF DEMOCRATIC MASS. AND ACTUALLY ACCOMPLISHED THINGS WITH A LIBERAL STATE GOVERNMENT.
YES TO A MAN WHO HAS ACTUALLY STAYED FAITHFUL TO HIS WIFE OF 37 YEARS!!!!!!!!
THIS IS A MAN WHO “BY HIS FRUIT WE CAN TRUST”
GO BLESS MITT ROMNEY AND GOD BLESS THE U.S.A…
Do any of you McCain-bashing idealists realize that he is the ONLY Republican candidate who can beat the Democrats in November? At least, that’s what all the legitimate pollsters have said. Maybe some of you want to join the Obama fairy tale while you’re fantasizing your favorite guy.
Ron,
people in glass houses shouldn’t throw rocks. You’re questioning Huckabee’s abiity to speak the truth, and then pour out all of these accolades on the master of deception….Personally i don’t think you have any idea as to what you’re saying, except that you like Romney…He has beared his fruit, and it bears his spirit….ask the former Governor of Mass.,prior to Slick Mitt…700million pr yr??????…and he says it only affected a few????? Fees on every drivers liscence, registration, and inspection….refusal to pay the state employes their salary, and their raises…No other rupublican could have done better in the lions den of Mass, for one reason…Mitt acted just like a Dem,with that 700 million increase….that was per yr, no other republican would have done that kind of snuggling up to th Dems act….Integrity wise, and from a point of Honesty Huckabee is head and shoulders over Bishop Mitt….Mike Has handled all of his questions that were pointed at his faith,Romney stood up and blew a lot of hot air,in His speech that said, absolutely nothing about faith….Believe me I know,a little more about that than people would be willing to give me credit for…I have book and page#,verse and chapter, and more….I’ll take Huckabee, and I’m praying that for the sake of the people, who have questions about the things mentioned here, that they would take the time to research what has been said
mccain is not perfect. no one is. but at least he can work with the other side of the aisle. nothing ever gets done in washington because of the far left AND the far right. we need moderation. mccain has been and is a national hero. he has my vote.
