Michigan turnout @ noon

3 to 6 inches of snow fell around Detroit overnight.
GOP officials say light turnout so far is in keeping with forecasts of about a million votes cast today in the republican primary.
In 2000 when John McCain won, 1.3 million votes were cast- 17 percent of McCain’s votes were from indies and dems.
Light turnout and weather this time could mean fewer non-GOP votes. That could be good news for Romney.
If polls are to be believed ALL the trend lines are in Romney’s direction…albeit within the margin of error.
Romney went optimistic about Michigan manufacturing job losses saying he’ll lead the recovery. Initially McCain said those jobs are not coming back, he cast Romney as pandering. It wasn’t until a couple days ago that McCain too started cheering the recovery. If Romney wins, jobs and optimism V Realism V pessimism may be seen as the defining issues.

If Romney wins, the race in many ways, will be back to the beginning.

Thinkabout it; a Romney win evens the playing field. Huck, Mac and Mitt each have a “W” going forward.

If McCain wins we’ll have an indisputable frontrunner.
AGAIN…Mitt needs Michigan…McCain needs SC.
Tactically the best way to campaign in SC is to win MI.</

A McCain win slingshots him into SC where he has basically everything on the line.
As the most experienced ’security candidate” if McCain can’t win in SC where the military population is the nations highest per capita,,where (besides NH and AZ) might he win?
Conversely if Mitt can’t win in his home state, well, uh, what then?

Bad trend for McCain……..

I my St. Clair County in Michigan the local paper is posting updates on voter turnout on their website. There are two trends here which could be bad for McCain. One, like Carl reported, a lower turnout (so far), but secondly and more important, in one of Port Huron’s heavily Democratic districts the DEMs are voting using the Dem ballot, dispite having limited names on their ballot. So at least right now in this area, no Democratic cross over is happening. If it stays that way, then Republicans may actually be able to decide the Republican winner. Which most polls suggest Romney leads among Republicans. Also, atleat those I talked to (I talk to alot of people in my profession) those that were still undecided said they were leaning Romney, with Economy their main issue. They also stated that Romney from his background is most capable to deal with economy. But atleast as of noon-hour, no Democratic crossover is happening here.

Cameron,

I love your reporting. You and Major are the best in the business!

I do have a request of you and FOX in general: please understand how frustrated we conservative voters are that FOX and others are declaring conservative nominees DOA before ANY state with closed primaries votes. IA, NH, MI, and SC all have large independent and undecided Democrat populations that vote overwhelmingly for populist or moderate candidates like McCain or Huckabee. No self-respecting conservative would ever pull the lever for McCain, so to say that Romney or anyone else MUST win this early primary or this caucus disenfranchises the base of the Republican Party – conservatives.

Thanks,

One Word – WYOMING?

What’s with Fox News. I really thought it was fair and balanced, but the continuos warning of impending doom, wrong delegate counts, forgetting Wyoming, publication of Swift’s extremely biased and false comments without any mention of her history, and lack of presence on the main page poll results make be begin to feel Fox News is only fair and balanced when they want to be.

Let’s hear an equal amount of positive for all candidates…. including Romney!

Way to go Carl. Great work. That is exciting news. I know Republicans want to Elect Mike Huckabee. He will have a very strong finish, regardless of spending:

During the first nine days of January, the Romney campaign spent more than $2 million in advertisements on television and radio in Michigan, compared with McCain’s $359,000 and Huckabee’s $39,000

The people of Michagan realize Mike would be the best for our economy and the rest of the country. Let’s keep it going Mike.

Yes – why is wyoming being forgotten???

I can’t remember when we started eliminating states as if they don’t matter. If Romney takes Michigan Romney will have a big boost going in as the only one with 2 1st places and 2 second places. The best that the other two will have is Huckabee w/ 1 first and 2 thirds and a non placement and McCain will have 1 first, 1 second, and 2 non placements.

Way to downplay Romney’s current position again Carl. Disappointing at best to see how slanted you have become in your reporting and your blog.

South Carolina is FRED THOMPSON’S turn. He is the only true common sense conservative. Read Father Jon’s “Opinion” piece.Very enlightening for those who think the gov’t should be run from the top down. FREDERALISM!!!!!

Don’t know why so many people discount Romney and Thompson before they have even gotten to play where the CONSERVATIVE vote counts. Romney has a decent chance to pull out a win in MI to go along with his win in WY. Two wins in open primaries isn’t really floundering folks! Thompson needs some help though. Maybe SC will come through for him. Gotta look at who the conservatives are and keep them in the race.

I am totally disgusted with “Campaign Carl’s” biased reporting. He omits Governor Romney every time or denigrates his accomplishments. It is bad enough trying to win an election. Compound that with having to do combat with a liberal, biased press – wow! I recommend that “Campaign Carl” go into the kitchen with his girl Hillary and both of them can learn to bake cookies or he could iron a few shirts for her!

“Conversely if Mitt can’t win in his home state, well, uh, what then?”

You could say that. Or you can take into consideration many different factors:

A) Mitt left Michigan after high school. He hasn’t resided there since. He is in the particular dilemma of not really having a home state. Michigan, Massachusetts, and Utah could all claim that distinction, or he could go for the claim that I do: I don’t have a “home state.” My father was in the military, so I’ve moved more times than I could count on two hands, and I’m only 26. For Mitt, Michigan is partially his home state, but definitely not a place he’s spent any major amount of time in the last 40 years. Would you consider a state your “home state” if you hadn’t lived there at all in 40 years? It’s a real stretch, to say the least.

B) You also have to consider that although the trends are not looking (so far) that Dems are crossing over, that doesn’t mean that in the final count it won’t have happened. It’s much too early to say one way or the other. If the Dems cross over in large numbers and vote for McCain, than this will be another New Hampshire, which proves nothing except that our primaries are awfully screwy. We are voting for who should be the candidate of our party, to run against the candidate of the other party. So how does it make sense that Democrats can vote for Republican candidates? I truly believe our system needs a major overhaul.

Anyway, just had to speak up in defense of Romney. I truly hope Mitt wins because he’ll make the best president this country has ever known. I’m sick to death of pundits declaring him dead. He’s got the money to go the distance. How about we let voters decide who’s dead?

I guess there are only 49 states now. Wyoming doesn’t count??????

Comment by CoachNY

Wyoming doesn’t count. All the media have their various reasons. They’ve insisted we’re going to stick with the game plan of Iowa and NH taking precedence AT ALL COSTS! Forget any other Americans who dare to choose their candidate at the same time! (Especially if said Americans choose Mitt Romney)

Comment by Ray

I sure hope that this is the case, especially what Steve from Michigan says about Dem turnout and crossover votes. It’s so frustrating that we in Ohio and the rest of the country have to stand twiddling our thumbs, while Dems and media decide “our party’s nominee”.

I sure hope Michigan sends the nation a message today!! Here in Ohio we have similar problems as Michigan, with GM here struggling and second in the nation behind Michigan in home foreclosures.

Our hearts go out to Michigan, and I hope they clean out the closet and vote for Romney. McCain would make a great Sec. of Defense, however we need someone who is business friendly and has ideas and plans for our nation.

Comment by Mitrebox

Even if Romeny places second tonight he will still be far ahead in the delegate count, that may give him the excuse to go on. As long as there are so many diverse rep candidates on the field there can never be a true front runner.

If Romeny loses tonight & McCain loses SC (to Huck) then Giulani has a chance. Hell even Huck has a chance then.

Don’t look for a front runner til ~3am Feb 6th.

Alan (who) Keyes and Ron Paul won’t drop out till 2009. And who is that guy demanding a recount of his 44 rep votes (and 1 democrat) in NH?

Comment by R Davidson

Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson have the best chances of uniting the Republican fiscal and moral conservatives to defeat the Democratic Party. However, Romney gets the edge as the most electable with his business experience to turn-around our economy, personality and the energy to get the job done.

I’m in Alabama where the south is leaning towards Thompson right now, but hopefully, the southern moral conservatives will wake up in time to see that Mitt Romney is electable and, if elected, he will continue to support our moral concerns on the Supreme Court for the next eight years.

Comment by Christopher Estep

Juan’s right. Mitt will be the clear frontrunner for two reasons. He’ll be the only one able to say he has 2 wins, regardless of where the other one is. Secondly, he’s the “what have you done lately?” winner. The really big loser will be Huckabee. Iowa sounds like forever ago. Huckabee will go from Huckaboom to “HuckaWho?”

Hi Cameron,

Fox news IS my favorite! I really wish Fox would stop being negative toward Mitt Romney. It is always a statement like…Romney done if he doesn’t win…it’s over McCain surges.. Romney says what the voters want to hear…

When McCain is lagging, it is downplayed. McCain is negative, it is ignored…I see the same about the race issue on the democrat side.

I expect more far and balanced from Fox.

Susan

If Michigan goes to Romney, that will mean 2 W’s for Romney and 1 each for Huck and Mac. And Romney will have a whole lot more delegates than anyone else. It baffles me Carl when you can’t acknowledge this. Surely you know about Wyoming – one of the fifty – borders Colorado on the north – has 14 total delegates. Surely you know about delegates. It is estimated (counting unpledged RNC delegates) that Romney currently has 30 delegates while Huck has 21 (that’s about two-thirds as many as Romney) and Mac has 10 (that’s one-third as many as Romney). I appreciate your blog.

Comment by Pistolero

Hi Carl. Love your reports from the campaign trail.

Why does everyone keep referring to Michigan as Romney’s home state when he hasn’t lived there in years? That’s like me calling Nevada my home state even though I left right after high school, over 35 years ago.

Also, is SC the first place where the Dems can’t cross over to influence the Reps primary? Won’t that be the first real test, then? Lord knows the Dems love to cause mischief during elections and I won’t trust the mantel of ‘front runner’ until we get actual Republicans voting. I’ve discounted the results of IA and NH already, that’s for sure.

Stay warm in Michigan.
Regards.

Here, here Juan,
I applaud your memory. If my math is right that would be 2 W’s for Mitt Romney and 1 W less for everyone else. Hmmm, and they can themselves Fair and Balanced … give me a break. They keep this up at Fox News I will have to change the channel.

Comment by Gil

Good reporting again Cameron, but don’t let your bosses know you actually said something too positive about Mr. Romney. It usually appears that even Fox News would rather see anyone other than Romney. If Romney doesn’t win the monimation, it will be interesting to listen to Fox in November 2008 when they discuss the Clinton victory and how the Rupulican candidate just couldn’t contend with her (regardless of whether it’s Mac, Thompson, Rudy or Huck).

Comment by Les

Carl Cameron is a liberal and is trying to influence the election.

Comment by Cory

Hey, Carl. How would a Mitt win even the field? Mitt already has a “W” in his column with Wyoming. After Michigan he would have two wins and two second places, making him the very clear frontrunner. I know you hate Romney and you let this fact take over all your reporting, but get real!

Comment by Steve

Humm, the delegate count is

Romney 30

Huckabee 21

McCain 10.

So who “needs” a win? Romney is ahead. The primaries are not a “winner take all” statewide contest. The nominee will be the candidate who has the most delegates, not the one who has one the most states.

Comment by Liz

It’s Mitt. He’s the only one who consistently cares, man. State after state, he gives it everything. He is the common denominator in each race. I appreciate that kind of determination myself.

Comment by Mike Smith

In addition to Michigan, Mitt Romney should do well in his other home states of Massachusetts and Utah, and he will continue to get the votes of conservatives in the Western United States who remember how well he handled the Salt Lake City Olympic Games. He already won Wyoming, he should win Nevada on Saturday, and he will easily win Idaho, Colorado, and New Mexico. He will even give Senator McCain a battle in Arizona, and all of the main candidates are tied in California right now. Any candidate who gets a reputation as a winner will continue to do well in the Republican primary.

MICHIGAN NEEDS TO VOTE FOR ROMNEY SO THE REST OF THE COUNTRY CAN.

Carl,
I don’t agreethat your not paying any attention,to Slick Mitt,in fact its almost like fox is using subliminal suggestion in favor of him….every ime I look at the political news…its his mugg that is flashed onto the screen first,or its news out of his camp first,or we’re going to skipp the weather on fox and friends, because w have an upcoming interview with Mitt Romney….Get to the candidates that can relate to the people for a change, this guy’s reptation precedes him……would ya?????

Thank You for Dissing Ron Paul in the last”debate.”
This allowed Dr. Paul to come off on you when you asked if he were electable.(with that third grade sissy Julie Annie snickering in the background like a punked out third grade girlie.)
He pretty much handed you your ass as he described the Borrying from China to give to Pakistan to fight for democracy in Iraq……………
I know why you don’t want him in the debates.you are not intelligent enough to even question him
I don’t think that you or the other Faux Newsmen are capable of holding a true debate
Its a shame Americans can’t see thru this BS smoke screen……..
