Romney Gets the Gold Out of Michigan!

Detroit, Michigan

He did it: The numbers are in and he decisively beat McCain in Michigan, his birth state where he has deep roots including a father who was a three term governor.  He now moves onto South Carolina but is downplaying expectations and saying South Carolina is NOT a must-win state.
Senior Romney official:

“Mitt is pumped, very excited.”

Now that they think they’ve won they admit that it would have been a death blow had he lost here. He already had his exit line, “we won among the Republicans but it wasn’t enough.”

“Now it becomes a war of attrition and we have the deepest pockets.”

“Gonna let the other three go at other in SC. We’ve been in the middle of all the fights so far. We’re going to let them fight for awhile. 2nd, 3rd or even 4th is fine for us in SC. We will be strong in Fla regardless.”

“It’s incredibly validating for the campaign.”

Is it fairly common for a winner to give their acceptance speech before the other canidates are done with their consession speeches??

It seemed that McCain was cut off but I dont know if it was deliberate?

I congratulate Gov. Mitt Romeny on his victory. It appears that he has finally found a message. Essentially Gov. Romney in order to get this victory has pledged to move the White House to Michigan and focus all of his efforts on the state and invest $20,000,000,000 a year on automotive fuel efficiency and alternative fuel research and development, not necessarily a fiscally conservative approach. I wish Michigan well, but what about us other states? And should Michigan put their trust in the Governor after all? To date his return on investment would scare any high profile executive with venture capital experience. He has dramatically outspent Sen. John McCain and Gov. Huckabee in Iowa, New Hampshire and Michigan. In the end we must ask ourselves, “Is this the kind of return we can expect?”

Mitt Romney won this because Michigan is the state suffering the most economically. Mitt is considered by many to be the best business man in America. That’s why Michigan needs him, and that’s why the US is going to need him. Our economic stength is going to be pushed to the fullest in the upcoming years with the oil shortage and globalization and Mitt is the only one with the experience.

Mitt Romney 2008!!!!

Nice to see that Hillary was given a tough run by “Mr. Non-commited”. And most were African-Americans.

Gov. Romney had an incredible win tonight. But the spin on Fox is unbelievable. If this had been reversed, we would have heard “landslide”, “mandate”, “decisive victory”, etc. Romney is winning by no less than 9%. Even in the announcement that he won, you have a negative spin on it. What’s up?

Wallace was very condescending with almost everything he said about Romney tonight. Maybe he would fit better over at cnn or somewhere.

Comment by Richard

Sorry McCain-you just ran out of independents and Democrats. The rest of the primaries are for us alone, and you just don’t seem to do well with real Republicans.Maybe you and Joe Lieberman and the rest of the Gang of 14 can join Mayor Bloomberg and form your own political party!

Comment by James, Sarver PA

Congratulations Mitt!
Although I think Mitt is the best qualified and would be the best POTUS, I have the respect for all of the candidates- on both sides. Campaigning like you do is grueling- much harder work than most people would think. None of of the candidates are average people. They are all exceptional. Some of their views are totally wrong and would hurt this country, but they are still above average Americans in their mental and physical abilities.

Mitt has probably worked harder than all of the other candidates- but that doesn’t mean he deserves to win. He deserves to win because his message is true and his platform is right, and he’s the most capable and competent candidate in both parties.

Take a day off and relax little bit Mitt. You do deserve that!!!

Then go give them heck!!! :)

Romney finally connected with an economic message. Republicans know that life-long government people don’t know how to stimulate adn maintain prosperity. They know that anti-carbon is anti-growth. As the economy softens, the Senators won’t have an answer and MItt will look like an ever brighter hope.
He deserves credit for sticking it out this long. McCain will likely show his crankiness in the next few days and that will wear out his short welcome. The contest may go all the way to the convention, but Romney is the one candidate that can pull all the conservatives together and carry their philosophy with optimism and dignity.

You have always been the “gold” candidate to us! Congratulations! A big thanks to you and your family. You exemplify the value of hard work and family strenght.

Having lived in Wyoming for a small portion of my life, I quite appalled that the Media has discounted Wyoming. The various blogs if they do mention Wyoming the include the word “Tiny” even though Wyoming has one more delegate than New Hampshire. I’m also incensed that Iowa and New Hampshire get all of the attention every Presidental Election. I feel that the states should be divided into small medium and large states and then have a lottery to determine the order. This way the smaller states all across the nation have a chance to have their issues aired on the national stage.

Wow, IF one of the others had won it would be a positive note. They didn’t so it has to be spinned that he wasn’t that big of a winner etc..but everyone forgets he already won first in another state. please be fair here and try to give him some credit..Good going Mitt

A huge win for Romney! Two golds and two silvers! He now has a commanding lead in delegates and in popular vote. Romney is the man! He has the experience, leadership, and morals we need in our next President. We support you overseas!

Comment by Mark in Hawaii

The quote below from the written piece above is a lie. Shame on Fox. You guys stop at nothing to spin things. Am I wrong?
Then: 1. Name your source! 2. Who from your “FOX News Political Team” wrote this?

“Now that they think they’ve won they admit that it would have been a death blow had he lost here. He already had his exit line, ‘we won among the Republicans but it wasn’t enough’.”

Tell me who from the Romney camp said this and who from you FOX team was put up to write this. I bet you don’t.

Cowards!!

Comment by MSKAZ

CONGRATS MITT….. Fox and others have downplayed your win by saying it was due to your home state and father. However it was your home state and your father was a former Gov when you were trailing McCain in the polls. The truth is McCain exposed himself as a defeatist politician who thinks jobs are gone and not coming back. You however stood up for MI and their jobs and commited to their economic recovery. The media also forgets you won Wyoming but your win there proves you care about every state not just the big ones.

Comment by Big Joe

Congrats to Mitt, especially after the straight talk express (mac attack ads) Oh I forgot, Mac said he doesn’t do that! HA

Comment by David W

Excellent win by Romney. 9 point margin, thousands more voters came to vote for Romney than voted for Hillary Clinton who got 55% of the democratic vote (of course, there wasn’t really a contest there for the Democratic party). Michigan has more than twice the population of New Hampshire, Iowa, and Wyoming combined.

Comment by nefi

But you say that McCain win. Polls!

27 McCain, 26 Romney.:)

Comment by Kevin Wade

He is going to let the “other three” go at it, huh? Ron Paul has received more votes overall than both Thompson and Giuliani. The “big four” should form a new party. They certainly aren’t Republicans.

Comment by Kevin

Mitt said this morning that the networks GAVE hima time to go out and accept. DONT blame Mitt !!

Comment by Kevin

Big question now: Who does Jeb endorse? Or does he?

Comment by Juan Barnett

A few things –

EPA/Anti-Carbon/Cafe/etc will hinder our economic process without proper assistance from govt. in the RnD field. I DO NOT mean that the government should run the RnD at all, but as Mitt says, allow private industry grants and awards to develop green solutions for the power needs of America.

Put simple – if Ford has to produce car X @ Y dollars to break even and retain positive growth, then Uncle Same says car X needs to meet specific green codes. Car X now cost more to meet legislative standards and the automotive industry just does not have the capital for that RnD.

Comment by John

I believe this was more of a Republican test than the other two major states (I am not ignoring Wyoming however). Gov. Romney is gradually winning me over. I believe he is the best conservative choice out there now. I had not really heard of him 6 months ago, so I believe he has come along ways. Congrats. Governor.

Huckabee is to Christianity
as
Osama is to Islam

Evangelicals are to Christianity
as
Jihadists are to Islam

Huckabee is a fraud and you are following a blind leader!

For you evangelicals:
Satan uses half truths to mix in his lies with truth, you will see this tactic with Huckabee.

To not see the cross on the commercial is one thing but he should have admitted it. “I am not ashamded of the gospel of jesus christ…”
H hid from his belief when he was under the pressure.

H is also always taking personal swipes at his rivals–especially Romney.
Romney attacks the facts period.
Huckabee attacks the persona. To quote him recently:
1. Baby is crying, he must be for romney
2. Let the air out of the tires for people who wont vote for me.
3. Will not admit with a YES or NO that he raised taxes.
4. Says Mormons beleive jesus and satan are brothers in order to sway the vote.

It is in his soul and only he knows it.

Dont vote based on religion, vote on who the best leader is.

Remember that he is an Arkansas boy.

And dont buy his quote “if i am getting all the heat i must be doing something right”. He’s getting the heat because he is an idiot and you evangelicals are going to vote for a Perot and then we will have hillary in the white house.
God gave you a mind to think and to use! Be smart! its all strategical at this point.
Huckabee is not in our best interest.

Nice win and look out Florida!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Romney campaign is clearly the front runner for a couple reasons. He does not expect to win SC (21 delegates) but expects to finish strong. He is expecting to win NV which shows him 5% above Rudy in latest polls (35 delegates). Florida, I think the media is dismissing Romney. The last poll before Michigan showed Rudy/McCain tied at 21% and Huck/Romney tied at 18%……thats not a huge margin. However, many do not seem to know or focus on that Romney’s ground people in Florida are, for the most part, all campaigners from JEB Bush’s team down there. JEB has not personally endorsed Mitt, however his whole ‘team’ is working for Mitt. So I definately think it helps Mitt having people there who know how to win there.

Also a little bit of inside…………………JEB Bush is one of Mitt’s VP possibilities. However with GW Bush lower approval, this is not in forefront. If Romney gets the nomination and Hillary is the DEM, then many I know in FL expect JEB to be the VP. If Hillary does not, then Mitt will likely go another direction. They want to be careful running another Bush, but if its against another Clinton, then its pretty safe bet JEB is VP.

But Mitt’s support in FL is being overlooked.

Mitt2008!!!!!!!!!!

We didn’t get into these messes overnight,we won’t solve them overnight but I believe he is the man to take us in the right direction. The real solution is to elect FRED THOMPSON!!!!!!!

It’s disappointing that FOX falls in step with the other news sources to downplay Romney’s BIG win in Michigan. If he would have lost it would certainly been a BIG loss according to them.

Let’s start seeing this for what it is – Romney won by a landslide, great victory, is the front-runner….

Hooray for our country if Mitt wins!

How can people say that Romney got the GOLD in Michigan? It looks to me after his 20 billion dollar big government PANDERING proposal regarding the auto industry that he plans on sending all the GOLD in FORT KNOX to Michigan to bail out his country club business buddies. Some small government conservative! NOT

Let’s face it. The establishment republicans love to look the other way when one of their own supports direct government intervention in the economy. What ever happened to laissez-faire?
Oh yeah….I forgot. That line only counts when one is bashing Huckabee right?

Real conservatives everywhere need to draw a line in the sand and say NO MORE to big government bail outs for Wall Street. Furthermore, it is time to STOP CUTTING the interest rates every time some section of the country club economy goes south. You are destroying the US dollar so as to bail out irresponsible businesses. Can I get a bail out too to fix my car that needs repair? NOPE. Oh yeah, I forgot, its big government when MAIN STREET gets some help. Its INVESTMENT when the country clubbers are feeding at the trough.

Enough is Enough. Vote Huckabee. He actually cares about conservatism!

Comment by Kyle Merriam

I could win Michigan too by promising 20 billion dollars of taxpayer money to everyone in the state.

If Romney really wants to impress me, he can keep the same position on an issue for more than 15 minutes at a time.

GO HUCKABEE!

Calling all real republicans. Lets look at this situtation honestly is it really that big of deal that Mit Romney won his own home state, I mean lets think about it he basicly promises Michigan the world with his “I will not sleep untill Michigan is back on top again speech” Wake up Michigan there is no way he can deliver the goods on that promise. On top of that this is a primary where democrats could vote in the republican primary its no wonder that Romney and McCain were the top two canidates, ones the home time kid that switches his positions to conservative evertime an election comes around, and the other is the darling of the democratic party running as a conservative. C’mon anytime the dems want to push through one of their hair braind skeems they go right to McCain for his support, and what does he do about 80% of the time, he gives it to him. This is not the man I want representing the Republican party (hows that for strait talk)

I don’t wan’t want ole flip flop Romney, (who reminds me of a slimey corprate car sales man. (hey Romeny America’s a nation not just a business, there is a bigger human factor here)

I don’t want the liberal’s go to boy (Sorry McCain)

How bout a real republican get the vote to represent us for a change my Vote goes to Mike Huckabee. Compasionate, Conservative Correct!

Is it me or did Romney Still a portion of his acceptance speach from that one Democrat that made a joke of himself in 04. I forget his name but he was the same guy that did the bit where he said “were gonna go to Iowa, then Michigan, then Florida then D.C. hoooooahh!!” I forget his name but I know I heard Mit pull a little snipit of that during his victory speach.

Don’t worry Mit a Victory for Mit Romney is NOT! a victory for the republican party. (Quote the Raven never more)

Here are some Romney facts:
WASHINGTON, Dec. 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ – The following is being
issued by the Democratic National Committee:

Sliding in the polls and struggling to overcome his image as a serial
flip-flopper, the New York Times reports that smooth talking Mitt Romney is
trying to shift attention away from ideological issues and toward his
business record. In light of recent revelations about his leadership at
Bain Capital, he might want to reconsider.

This week, the Los Angeles Times revealed that Romney used “shell
companies in two offshore tax havens” to help clients “avoid paying U.S.
taxes.” At Bain Capital, Romney reportedly steered clients toward tax
shelters in the Cayman Islands and Bermuda, attracting “billions of
additional investment dollars” to Bain Capital, boosting profits for Romney
and his partners. The Times also reported that Romney continues to earn
money from at least one of his Cayman Island tax shelters, including more
than $1 million last year from BCIP Associates III Cayman, “a private
equity fund that is registered at a post office box on Grand Cayman
Island.” [Los Angeles Times, 12/17/07] On Romney’s watch, Bain Capital also
developed a reputation for extracting “jaw-dropping” consulting fees out of
companies, sometimes just shortly before those companies collapsed and
workers were left jobless. [Los Angeles Times, 12/16/07]

Maybe Romney would rather focus on his personal financial business, for
example the millions he made from his trust funds when they invested in
companies doing business in Iran, despite his sharp rhetoric on the
campaign trail urging state pension funds to divest from those companies.

“If smooth talking Mitt Romney thinks he can rescue his floundering
campaign by talking about his business experience then by all means, let’s
talk about his whole record,” said Democratic National Committee spokesman
Damien LaVera. “After Romney explains why he helped companies set up
offshore tax havens and slash jobs instead of investing in America’s
economy he can explain why he talks tough on divesting from companies doing
business in Iran when his own trust funds are littered with those same
investments. With a record like that, Romney might have an easier time
explaining all those flip-flops.”

He’s So Bain:
Mitt Makes Millions on Offshore Tax Shelters Taxes…

Romney Got Rich Advising Clients to Use Offshore Tax Shelters. “While
in private business, Mitt Romney utilized shell companies in two offshore
tax havens to help eligible investors avoid paying U.S. taxes, federal and
state records show.Romney gained no personal tax benefit from the legal
operations in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. But aides to the Republican
presidential hopeful and former colleagues acknowledged that the
tax-friendly jurisdictions helped attract billions of additional investment
dollars to Romney’s former company, Bain Capital, and thus boosted profits
for Romney and his partners.” [Los Angeles Times, 12/17/07]

Romney Still Profiting from Offshore Shelters. “In the Cayman Islands,
Romney was listed as a general partner and personally invested in BCIP
Associates III Cayman, a private equity fund that is registered at a post
office box on Grand Cayman Island and that indirectly buys equity in U.S.
companies. The arrangement shields foreign investors from U.S. taxes they
would pay for investing in U.S. companies. Romney still retains an
investment in the Cayman fund through a trust. Campaign disclosure forms
show the investment paid him more than $1 million last year in dividends,
interest and capital gains.” [Los Angeles Times, 12/17/07]

Financial Advisor Increased Mitt’s Offshore Investments. “His financial
trust retains investments in at least 32 Bain and Sankaty equity, hedge and
debt funds, among other assets, the documents disclosed. Under his
retirement agreement, Romney retains a share of the profits at Bain
Capital, as well as the right to make new investments in Bain funds through
his trust, until February 2009. Malt said he had repeatedly increased
Romney’s stake in the Cayman fund since 2003. He said he was unaware of the
specific figures, but added that he knew he ‘wrote a lot of checks,’ and
that it paid a return of 20% to 30% a year.” [Los Angeles Times, 12/17/07]

…While Cutting Jobs and Closing Companies…

The Bain Way: Collect Millions in Fees Then Shutter the Shop. “From
1984 until 1999, Romney led Bain Capital, a Boston-based private equity
group that earned jaw-dropping profits through leveraged buyouts, debt
hedge funds, offshore tax havens and other financial strategies. In some
cases, Romney’s team closed U.S. factories, causing hundreds of layoffs, or
pocketed huge fees shortly before companies collapsed.” [Los Angeles Times,
12/16/07]

Romney “Unconcerned About Those Affected By His Decisions.” “Some of
Romney’s colleagues recall him as vain, however, and focused only on the
bottom line. They saw him as impatient and unconcerned about those affected
by his decisions.” [Los Angeles Times, 12/16/07]

– Bain Reaped $100 Million While Hundreds Lost Jobs and Ampad Went
Bankrupt. In 1992, Bain Capital invested $5 million towards the purchase of
American Pad & Paper (Ampad) from Mead Corp., which, at the time, was only
$11.3 million in debt with sales of $106.7 million. Over the next 8 years,
under Bain management Ampad had gone public, made several acquisitions, and
made over $100 million in payouts to Bain and to its investors. By 1999,
two American plants were closed, 385 Ampad workers were laid off, the
company was $392 million in debt, sales were slipping, and, the next year,
its creditors forced Ampad into bankruptcy. [Securities and Exchange
Commission Filings, Boston Globe, 6/26/07]

…And Hypocritically Pandering on Iran.

Despite Tough Talk On Iran, Romney Made Millions There. Romney had up
to $250,000 invested in the Russian state-owned GazProm, according to his
personal financial disclosure for 2006. And in 2006, the Romneys made up to
$1 million in a fund invested in GazProm and the Chinese state oil firm,
Cnooc Ltd. The Wall Street Journal noted that the fund, Horizon: Alpha +
had more than $1 million of wife Ann Romney’s assets invested in it and
yielded her up to $1 million in 2006. [Chicago Tribune, The Swamp blog,
9/19/07]

– Romney Urges Divestment from Iran, Calls on Iranian President to be
Indicted for Genocide. In February 2007, Governor Mitt Romney released a
letter sent to New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli urging that he
pursue “a policy of strategic disinvestment from companies linked to the
Iranian regime.” [MittRomney.com release, 2/22/07] This week, Romney called
on the United Nations to ban Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from
speaking to the world body next week and instead indict him for genocide.
[AP, 9/17/07]

1994: Romney “The Blind Trust is an Age-Old Ruse.” During Romney’s
Senate run against Ted Kennedy in 1994, he alleged that a financial
arrangement of Kennedy’s was a conflict of interest, and charged that a
blind trust could be given “rules” that prohibited from potentially
sensitive investments by the stakeholder. He was quoted as saying, ‘The
blind trust is an age-old ruse. You give a blind trust rules. You can say
to a blind trust, don’t invest in properties which would be in conflict of
interest or where the seller might think they’re going to get an advantage
from me.’ ” [Boston Globe, 10/19/1994]

– Romney “The Fact that It’s a Blind Trust Does Not Hide It.” Romney
said, “‘It’s a conflict of interest pure and simple – and it’s wrong for a
U.S. senator,’ said Romney. ‘The fact that it’s a blind trust does not hide
it.’ A Kennedy aide, however, replied the senator had no financial interest
in the federal leases. [Boston Herald. 10/19/1994]

Romney is a prime example of what is wrong with America. Michigan voters are a dissapointment.

To Ace
Your first clue of false claims should be that the above is sponsored by the DEMOCRATIC party.
The Clinton machine is going to have a real hard time digging up dirt on Romney and they know it!!
Unlike Guilianni, McCain and Fred he has been married to the same woman for 25 years and has 5 dedicated sons working round the clock to get Dads message out. He is a businessman who has made it all on his own with honesty, integrity, and conviction. He has stated that he WILL NOT accept pay if his presidential bid is won..he also did not accept pay in Mass. Arnold Schwartenegger is the only other Governor to have ever done that.
He took the Olympics that were 360 milllion dollars in debt and full of corruption (an embarrassment to the US) and turned it around for a 100 million dollar profit.
The Clinton machine is running scared..he can’t be touched. He has too high of morals and integrity for them to be able to whitewash the issues. If you’re wondering why they would make a point to print such garbage..look at who the Democrats have to offer.
Clinton and Obama both want tax increases (I don’t know about you, but I pay enough taxes) I am lower to middle class. They are actually fighting over who proposed the best tax increase in the primary..is this what you want..then you are blogging on the wrong page..go join George Soros (a billionaire that never gets cut down for his endorsement of the democratic demigods) or the Daily Kos..endorsed by such said man and the Times is really close behind for Liberal leanings. I suggest you look elsewhere for your “NEWS” cause all the Times prints is garbage and spews lies. If you think I’m wrong how many of their journalists have been chastised for plagiarism and boldface libel?? A LOT!!
Get a brain..then vote your conscience but I doubt that will happen if you keep reading what the Democrats have to say.

Mitt Romney was put in first place by ticked off Democrats who voted for him so that he would actually spend more of his money on the campaign. President Romney?????????? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOOOLO

Thank you Jan and Butch. You say Romney is a used car salesman when your own man, Mike Huckabee is campaigning almost exclusively on his religious affiliation and one liners. His qualifications for the job are barely above that of a used car sales manager. I’m sure Huckabee would be a great guy to have a beer with but he isn’t even close to being qualified for the office of POTUS and everyone outside of evangelicals knows this.

I think it is embarassing to the Republican party that a fraud like Mike Huckabee is even still in this race. Polarizing voters based on religion to get votes is pathetic. I love how the guy tries to pretend like he is running a positive campaign when he more then any other candidate has used religion and bashing of Romney’s to win points and votes.

I hope all of you will start looking at issues, experience, and qualifications of the candidates when you vote instead of whether they have served as a Baptist minister in a previous life. Huckabee’s populist message would be great if he were a Democrat but this is for the Republican nomination. An anti-business and economic stance isn’t going to help America out of the looming economic troubles we face. His ideas and strategy (or lack thereof) will only compound this countries current economic woes.

OUR ECONOMY NEEDS ROMNEY TO THE RESCUE! Romney is an economic genius
who has taken failing companies and turned them into successful
businesses., Romney knows how to create and hold jobs. Romney has a
proven track record of problem solving. He turned the S.L. Olympics
around from disaster to huge success. ROMNEY IS THE TURN-AROUND KING!
While he was governor the students in Mass. were number one in the
nation. Romney strictly upholds our constitution and stands firmly
for individual and states rights. Romney will defend our freedoms.
Romney will bring new vision, energy, and efficiency to Washington.
Romney is a committed family man of absolute integrity. He has
personally walked the walk of socially conservative values all his
life. The fruits can be seen in his marriage and outstanding family.
We need Romney’s keen intelligence, new vision, and commitment to
build a stronger, safer, better American for us all.

Well Jason its either a Baptist Minister that had more yrs as a Governor than your guy Captan Pander, and acomplished more than Your guy did, and, did it respectfully….The State workers got their money while he was still in office, the education programs were given national recognition and he served for ten yrs and listened to the people, not to mention the road system that He put in place……..or a Bishop that raised fees that He lied about,(said it only affected a few)when actually it affected every driver in the State,in three different ways,He held back wages and raises,so they would’nt reflect on his record, and then claimed He cut sending, and He answers to a living prophet that states,if a prophet is removed from the polotics, that would mean God would be taken out of Government….you’ll find that Mormon (Ezra Taft Benson) made those remarks….now as a Bishop and, being bound to the living prophet,I guess you’re going to tell me that Romney would’nt let that interfere with his Job….You might want to tell somebody else Jason, I know of people that spent 20yrs in the Lds society, and I know what Bishops are held to….apprantly you don’t know these things or you would’nt be saying the thngs that you do,and I don’t hold that against you,but they are things you should look into, before you post, and for your own good
