Fred Heads be strong!

With the results unclear as to whether he comes in 3rd or 4th in S.C. Senator Thompson, thanked South Carolina supporters and said very little about his future.
In recent days he has said he would return to Tennessee and visit with his Mom and make a decision about his future.
Parts of his remarks tonight referred to his candidacy in the past tense, but he issued forward looking challenges to the GOP on leadership and direction.

If Huckabee comes up short, it could cause southern conservatives to give Fred another look and thus give him more reasons to stay in beyond the upcoming debates and explosion of state contests on 2/5.

If he can, stay in the race til the next debate in Florida.. I know its tough, but I sure hope he can try to do that! Yep Fred-Head here! Viva La Fred!!!!!

Thanks Carl for all your hard work out on the trail!

Comment by Robin Dicken

No Carl, YOU need to be strong. When your betters pushed you to ask that dumb question “are you electable sir?” to Dr. Ron Paul. WOW Second place in Nevada! Electable?

Comment by omegahpla

Carl is so obviously in love with the McCain campaign that he should go work for it. He is not being fair to other candidates, especially Romney who he negs on every time he talks about him and spins everything he does as wonderful and significantly possitive.

You can see the glow in Carl’s eyes as he covers McCain. You can also see the distaste when he speaks of Romney and understes every accomplishment, and over amplifies every negative, and even seem to invent some. Reporting should be left to the unbiased, not to those who shill for one candidate and against others while giving coverage because that effects the information given out, and I don’t think what we get from Carl is anything like fair and balanced.

Comment by Kim H. Casas

Also….Fred, Please do not endorse McCain!!!! FRED08!!!!

Comment by Robin Dicken

Why should I be respectful to a man that just took second place in Nevada (Paul!!) who asks disrespectful questions like “are you electable?
Carl needs to be respectful. Go Ron, despite Fox News shunning you.

Fred Thompson is a smart man. I pray he will stay in the race and continue to build the momentum – he is our TRUE Conservative in the race!

Comment by MADRE

FRED THOMPSON’S SPEECH HAS CAUSED ME TO LOOK CLOSER AT HIS PLATFORM. HE SHOWS GREAT CLASS, COMES ACROSS AUTHORITIVE WHICH IS IMPORTANT WHEN DEALING WITH MIDDLE EAST. I HOPE HE REMAINS IN THE FIGHT. I HOPE THE NEWS STATIONS WOULD GIVE A MORE POSITIVE OUTLOOK OF HIM AND MAKE HIM SOMEONE WE SHOULD BE WATCHING NOT SHUTTING OUT. VERY SICK OF THE MEDIA CHOOSING OUR FRONT RUNNERS, WE VOTE FOR WHO WE WANT AND YET WHEN ALL YOU SEE IS MCAINN AND ROMNEY.. MCAIN AND HUCKABEE.. CLINTON OBAMA . SEEMS AMERICA HAS THE OPTION OF ONLY THOSE.

Comment by MADRE

WOULDN’T IT BE WONDERFUL TO SEE THOMPSON CONTINUE ON! WOULDN’T IT BE GREAT TO SEE HIS NAME MENTIONED AS A FRONT RUNNER INSTEAD OF THE MEDIA CHOSING FOR ME.

Comment by Chris Langis

I am a big Fred supporter, feeling very deflated. looks like fred is gonna lose SC. Its a very sad day for traditional Americans. I would like to thank you for standing out well above the rest of your Fox counterparts. From what I see, your reporting remained fair, a few more articles would have been nice, but for the most part thank you.

fred is going to stay in the race and eventually become President! I have no doubt. The press is trying very hard to get him out but, we won’t let that happen. Let’s get on with it!

Go Fred…..go man, go! The True Conservative in the run. Don’t understand why media has not picked you up….or Fred, you need to GO FOR IT!! There are a quite a few of us out here!!! Let’s go!!

Thanks Carl. Your kind words are the nicest things to hear tonight

Comment by Diane (with one "N") from California

Carl, thanks for the great blogs tonight. Not like you don’t have anything else to do ;) I’m sorry Fred didn’t do better in SC, but I’m glad he sucked votes from Huckabee. As much as I hate it that McCain the RINO won another state, McCain is no threat to Romney. He can’t win in closed primary states on 2/5. He can’t win here in the west. Amnesty? Hello? Bob Novak just said McCain’s going to take the nomination. No stinkin way. Off the subject totally, is Bill Hemmer really short or is Mitt Romney really tall?

Comment by Santorum Soldier

Does John McCain think he could have won SC without Fred (POS) Thompson being in the mix???? Hell no!!! You can thank Fred for his part in this fake victory for McCain. If by any chance McCain thinks real conservatives will support him in the fall regardless if he would be running against HRC or BHO or the devil himself just for the win. Think again! We do not climb slippery slopes and John McCain is the Mt Everest of slippery slopes.

Comment by Rob

I agree, Fred needs to stay in this race. This is a very different year and I think that McFeingold will implode along with the Huckster and then Fred will be recognized for his stands on immigration, education, abortion, defense, and the economy. He’s the best candidate out there.

Comment by Daniel Davies

Thanks for the kind words to us FredHeads Carl- you ‘da man!

Hopefully Fred will stick with it at least through Super Tuesday- he is the last best hope for conservatism in the Republican party.

I found it amusing that the Huckabee camp blamed Fred for this loss; remember Fred was running second nationally to the now-all-but-dead Giuliani until the Huckaboom in December. Thompson’s conservative-evangelical support went to the moderate/populist Huckabee due to Huckabee’s outspoken religiosity and endorsements from religious leaders. It’s more like Huck stole the nomination from Fred, and the conservative Reagan coalition was the real victim.

Again, I hope and pray that Senator Thompson will stay in it until at least Feb. 5 to give us conservatives a candidate we can wholeheartedly support. God bles you Fred, I’m praying for you and your Mother.

[...] After coming in a disappointing third in South Carolina, aides tell Fox that no final decision about the future of the campaign will be made Sunday or as late as Monday. Rich Galen, a senior Thompson adviser, said after the speech that he doesn’t even know what is next for the campaign. “We will know when we know. We don’t have the same deadlines that you guys in the media got,” Galen said. (Note: Carl says supporters might have reason for hope!) [...]

Comment by lastnymleft

Fred Thompson supporters should look to the only remaining true Conservative in the race, Dr Ron Paul, when Fred bows out.

All Paleo-Conservatives agree that Ron Paul best represents the party from Reagan’s *early* days.

That’s why Barry Goldwater Jr, Pat Buchanan, and Richard Vigurie, amongst other GOP legends, support Dr Paul.

Don’t be fooled, by falling for the smooth sale-pitch of the neo-cons. Return to your roots. It’s the only hope this country has to be saved from the coming financial tsunami.

Comment by Beth

It’s a sad day for us Fredheads. Very disappointing, although it was destined to be an uphill battle, with his late entry into the race. History will note that it doesn’t pay to deviate from standard operating procedures in Presidential elections, and I predict Giuliani’s campaign will suffer the same fate. It looks like Mac IS back!

Comment by Conrad

It’s a shame to see Fred Thompson go, he was reminiscent of Ronald Reagan and was the only major candidate who spoke up for smaller government. Too bad Ron Paul is too far behind, he certainly epitomizes small-government values; he even gradually convinced me that you can’t honestly call yourself a small-government conservative while advocating $500+ billion a year for wars and foreign aid handouts. I guess now I’ll vote for Ron Paul as a small-government protest vote, since we really have to do something to turn this party away from big-government deficit spending and back to its small-government roots.

Stay in Fred!! The people will support you!!

Comment by irislynch

Altho Fred came in third, it is a stronger third and he is STILL a viable candidate. Duncan Hunter has bowed out which will help Fred a little, but the big help will be as the people become aware of the REAL MCCAIN. Why is it he never talks about his wife? What about his children? Why would any Republican want a Democrat like Mc Cain to be President? Didn’t we just have one?

Then there is Huckabee. He is about finished. He will fizzle out in Florida. Fred will again come in third or fourth. But isn’t that exactly who Fred is? He will keep on thumping along until there are none of the charmers, the entertainers and the liars left..and voila Fred Thompson ..PRESIDENT. Forget Guilani. Romney is the best of that bunch, but his being a Mormon (it shouldn’t matter, but it does) makes him an enigma to the voters. If Fred can stay through Feb 5th, he will be our next Prez.

Comment by claire

Thanks Carl for the update. Finally a member of the media doesn’t go out there panning Fred and telling us he doesn’t have the fire in his belly, or he is irrelevant. I suppose the media thinks they can go easy on him now that he didn’t win SC. I wonder if the media are encouraging Fred to stay in the race because they hope it will split the Conservative vote between Fred and Romney, as it did in SC, leaving Mc Shamesty as the beneficiary?
If Fred stays in then we have split the Conservative vote between Romney and Fred, if he drops out hopefully his vote would go to Romney, although I believe that there is a faction of religious bigotry in a minority of the evangelical vote that simply would not vote for Romney because he’s Mormon. So maybe Huckabee benefits from the religious bigotry. I wish people like these would leave the party, the GOP does not need religious bigots.
I cannot believe the Huckabee supporters are fooled into thinking that he is a Conservative, We have a choice between Jimmy Carter/Bill Clinton Huckabee, or the angry old shamnesty guy Mc Cain. I for one will not vote for Mc Cain or Huckabee. Fred is my choice based on his positions on the issues, not his war valor or his comedic timing and pandering. Vote for Conservatism!

Comment by Floyd Akridge

Fred is finished unfortunately. A campaign that had such promise is now just one of the greatest flameouts in political history.

Fred never showed any passion or energy for the office until it didn’t matter. No one is going to give such a person a 2nd, 3rd, etc…look. It is very unfortunate. Fred has good character and morals and would have been good in the position but he never understood what it took in the campaign.

Comment by Tom Puzzo

No response, well here is a response. No matter what Fred Thompson decides:

To the Media (TV, Print): Stop being so negative towards Thompson. Enough of the “got in too late”, “lazy”, “little enthusiasm”, “no money”, “lacks fire in the belly”, yada, yada, yada.

To the analysts and spin doctors: The same applies. You guys just have to over-analyze everything.

Just report the facts.

As for me and millions of Fred supporters, we are 100% behind him, all the way.

Comment by Mike Poarch

We need to keep Fred in the race and start supporting him. He is the only conservative Republican left on the ticket. The only one left who takes the southern border seriously. The most consistent one on issues regarding taxes, decreasing government, and strict constructionism in the SCOTUS. He’s the only republican I could vote FOR. Unfortunately, it’s begining to look like I will have to use my vote to vote AGAINST a Democrat.

Comment by Adam in Anchorage

FRED DON’T YOU LEAVE US!!! You are this country’s only hope. Start taking it to McCain and watch the nation flock to your side. Start pointing to the records if all these liberals, on our side, and watch the conservatives step forward. Who cares if the media makes you out to be a “negative campaign” runner? The real conservatives are out here and we are salivating to see the NEGATIVES pointed out in these so-called conservatives. You are the only one who can do this. Do it for your country. Do it for all of us who can’t! We are ready for you to lead us. This country needs a change– a change back to our conservative principles. The only way to save this nation is to cut taxes, maintain strong military (and stay on the offense), and a leader who knows how important it is that the government stay out of peoples lives. Anything else, and America won’t recognize herself when the next opportunity comes around to elect a president. Now is the time. We need Fred Thompson– more than ever.

We are going to pay with more than blood, if this country elects McCain or Huckabee, or God forbid, Clinton or Obama.

FRED DON’T YOU LEAVE IS!!!

Comment by John Creason

I hope you’re right but it looks like McCain is the media darling. Liberals love him. The big 3 love him. Conservatives don’t. Hillary will crush him.

Comment by Cao

I hope he hangs in there, because the other candidates have nothing to offer America…they look to me like the democrats of 30 years ago. I will never vote for a Democrat in my lifetime–so if Fred stands down, I will, too – and we can usher in an era of neverending Progressive politics from both sides of the aisle.

Comment by Jeff

Thanks Carl for the words of encouragement. Fred supporters are urging him to stay in because Huckabee doesn’t ring true as a conservative when compared to Fred. My problem with Huckabee is that I believe he is siphoning off votes for Fred, not the other way around. Go to their respective websites and comnpare. That’s all I ask. And remember, you’re voting for a President–not a pastor.

Comment by bobb

Fred! We need you to stay in the race. The thing you have going for you is that the liberals don’t take you seriously. They don’t even bother to point out all the things that make your current “Regeanesque” schtick such a joke. They just laugh at you, because they think you’d be easy to beat. They think you’d be too “lazy” to run a good campaign, simply because you’ve run such a lackluster campaign so far. So please stay in the race. We need you.

He should have stayed there.

Comment by shane stephens

It would be a sad day if Fred gives in to media pressure to step aside. As a true conservative Republican, it will be hard to cast a vote for the Rhino frontrunners. It looks like we haven’t learned anything from the last major election. I guess when the Dems win again, maybe , just maybe conservatism will be looked upon as the answer to this countrys problems. Look at Maryland. Cleaned out the Republicans from office. Elected a far left incompitent mayor to Govrener. And all you hear is HIGHER TAXES, GAY MARRIAGE, FUEL TAX INCREASES. Thats not the message I think anybody was sending or maybe it was.

Comment by Renwaa

Come on Fred! Hang in there. Huckabee has shown he’s not capable of carrying the Evangelical vote (one-trick pony) and certainly not the non-evangelical vote as we saw last night. You’ve still got a chance and I’m hanging on to the end for sure. My donated money wasn’t for nothing!!! The future of the GOP is not to elect “mavericks” (MSM favorites), amnesty promoters, or squishy RINOs who move the the right now that they want to be the POTUS. We already know what the other side has to offer. Why would we allow the GOP to become socialist-lites? I thought the GOP was for conservatives! Let’s act like it.

Comment by Regina Draper

Thank you for showing some support for Senator Thompson. I was dismayed and saddened by the turn of events yesterday. Not because he came in 3rd, that’s respectable, but because Fred’s own party is leaving him in droves. I don’t think half of the Republican party really knows what the Republican party is anymore. Another blogger pointed out correctly that this generation of Republicans are much more forgiving of government interference, most have at least one gay friend, divorced parents, less religion in their lives and expect government to bail out every Dick and Jane that comes along, hmmmmm…. who is that describing…..DEMOCRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve always said Fred is a dying breed, but I believe our last hope of rangling this party, hog tie it and bring it back to what it should be. Unite the party Fred, I know there are thousands just dying to vote for you. Please give them a chance. Stay in the race long enough to knock the Republican wannabes (ie the other GOP candidates) on their hind quarters. We have faith in you, sir, we will fight for you till the bitter end. If you name disappears from the ballot, we will write it in, better to vote your heart than “the best to beat the democrat” though God help us if any of those 3 get in!

Comment by John Schwartz

Mike Huckabee is ridiculous….. I can’t believe how brainwashed the evangelicals are over this Baptist Preacher…. It is truely scary!!! Mike Huckabee is no conservative….he is more liberal than any of the candidates. Unfortunately, he and McCain have put on false fronts and tried to paint themselves as Reagan Republicans which is a joke. It is sad how the field of current candidates of the Republican Party is so weak and changes their platforms and platitudes with each poll. Example look at the speeches of McCain, Huckabee and Romney in Iowa and NH and then look how they quickly converted themselves into Conservative wannabees from their speeches in SC. (minus Romney)

These are just typical lair politicians that change with the wind. I feel that we are looking at the true demise of the USA and the winds of change are now blowing in our face and not our backs. Immigration, tax policy, social security, pro-growth business attitudes…these are all lacking from the current Republican candidates. I would say the closest is Thompson to true Reagan conservatism unfortunately, the Republicans seem not to like what he has to say.

I do believe that the chances for a Democrat in the White House in 2009 is becoming more of a reality and with that goes the last great chance that the Republican Party will have to prove to the nation that “true” Conservative values can make our nation a better place. Because the Democ”rats” will control the WH, Congress, and then appoint liberal judges and then defacto control the Supreme Court. With that accomplished look out because here comes far left loony Communist style socialism. Political correctness run a muck and social policies that will destroy free enterprise and run the USA into a deep recession….LOOK OUT because the writing is on the wall.

As Pat Buchannan is fond of saying the death of the west is at our doorstep, the barbarians have broken down the door and are dictating the terms of our surrender. Heaven help the USA and I pray that we can save ourselves from our self because we have no one to blame but us…. No nation in the world can defeat the USA; the USA will be defeated by itself.

We watched FOX news for the SC Primary results and were very disappointed at the lack of coverage on Fred Thompson or Ron Paul. You seemed so oblivious to the fact that there were more than two candidates in the race. Shame on you. We usually rely on FOX news, but we are getting ready to dump you and go to the internet. Get your act together guys!

Comment by Lanette Trotter

Hang in there, Fred!! We really need you!!

Fox News: Get back to your fair and balanced reporting or you will lose your audience. More and more, you seen to have deserted what made you great!

Comment by Suzy

Let the Mcnamesty and the Huckster have their top spots. Everyone who has been there starts going backwards. It is a good thing being slow to rise. Then you can be assured of a top spot at the end of the road. Maybe it is all in the cards do ya think? The Huck is falling everyday now. Who will be the next to rise to the occasion? Fred you just have to be there at the end! And God willing I suspect you will be.

Comment by Michigan

I know it is not looking that great, but he HAS to stick it out. Mr. Thompson, do not let the media take away your chance to be President. I have seen you in videos, TV etc and I know you are a fighter, and I know you can’t quit. If you quit, you are allowing the dems or libs to run our country. You are the only hope we have left to get conservatism back….real conservatism. Alot of people are rooting for you. It will be a hard fight, and when you are having a battle, you need to think of all of us that are supporting you. Hopefully that will help give you strength to fight on. Good luck on your run, and we’ll be rooting you on!

GO FRED GO!!!
Mr. President For 2008

Comment by Ron Brown

Fred needs to stay in the race. He is the only conservative and therefore my only choice. I will write him in rather than vote for any of these other pretenders.

Comment by Richard

Fred is the only real conservative in the race, The media has barked its rhetoric and tried desperately to make Fred out to be less than viable. FOX has gone the way of CNN and I dont care how Brit Hume spins it…HE is a part of the BS!! If the Pundits cared more about the party and the Character of it…Fred Barnes! Willy Kristol ( Now NYT writter…hmmmm) and SURPRISINGLY Charles Krauthammer! What the hell are you people doing? You are so caught up in “Being right” that you cant seem to bring yourself to say it out loud!! Fred Thompson IS and HAS the only REAL CONSERVATIVE message and record in the field! But YOU in your high towers dont think he is electable. Thanks for your wisdoms jerks but let us the people decide and with the TRUTH spoken. You no longer give the facts either FOX boys!! You are CNN bound and I find you all pathetic and lacking in substance. This race has brought out your true colors…arrogance and sole opinions of your media ratings. Your sad and its sad that FOX couldn’t maintain their ideas of honesty and REPORTING the facts out right.

Comment by Tom

PLEASE DON’T GIVE UP THE RACE FRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by KLC

I hope Fred stays in the race!! He is the best candidate in the field, but gets overlooked often by the media. If I could offer a few comments to him: 1. Explain why his words are so important and why other candidates rely upon images. 2. Flash that smile more often (it quickly translates to likeability and trust).

Comment by LEL, White Bear Lake, MN

PLEASE FRED, one more debate in Florida. You started late and missed initial “discussions”. Give Republicans a chance to hear your policy and hopefully they’ll see the difference between you and the liberal McCain & Huck.

Comment by Susan DeVuyst

GO FRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DON’T QUIT……..STAY IN THERE!!!!!!

Comment by Bev

I too was so disappointed in Fox News coverage of FRed Thompson. Repeatedly, you would cut to a commercial in the middle of a sentence, or w/e. All forms of “sabotage” … not to mention using unfavorable adjectives to describe his campaign, etc. What type of bias is that? Your job is to report. Period. Isn’t that what you claim? “We report. You decide.” But not in this case. You are definitely at the point of trying to decide for us. Get a grip! and take it seriously that you said you are fair and balanced!!!! Because right now, you are definitely NOT!

Comment by Kim

Keep the faith, Fred! America NEEDS you!

And Fox.. I have been so disappointed in your unbelievably biased election coverage. It is as if your reporters and commentators (the majority, anyway) are more interested in trying to “call” the results in advance so that they can later say “I said it first” — instead of actually reporting “facts” and candidate positions instead of skin care advice (”Boy he looks tired”) and irrelevant cute quips.

Also, remember that there are more than three candidates on the Republican side. Try giving at least relatively equal coverage to them all.

PLEASE… get back to discussing the ‘relevant’ topics like issues instead of straying down the tabloid path.

A dedicated “Fred head” in Texas, who hates the fact that these other states are narrowing my choices.

Comment by Chris Parker

My impression of Fox New’s coverage of Fred Thompson’s campain, is that they have had a negitive bias against him, and that it really shows.

Denis Miller’s comments a few weeks ago on Bill O.’s show where especially disrespectfull.

I now place what I see on Fox News on a par with CNN, and that makes me sad.

Comment by jenny

Fred Thompson needs to head back to hollywood, he has shown nothing but poor character in this race. All Fred does is attack others because he has no record of his own to stand on. Fred never proposed a bill while in the senate, I mean if all these conservative issues are so close to his heart why didn’t he do anything about them. Fred Heads, find a new candidate, why are you supporting a grouchy man who puts nothing into his candidacy, that is not fair to his supporters…

Comment by David Huskins

I am with Fred until the convention. This is all about delegates and Fred can still win and if not at least broker the winner at convention. Super Tuesday has always been the place for him to shine. Let’s go to Super Tuesday. I am an evangelical and I will not support Mike Huckabee he is not a full spectrum conservative. It is Fred only for me. I was in Iowa and South Carolina volunteering and I will be in Florida and here in Georgia. Let’s go all the way to the convention.
I am open to a Thompson/McCain ticket but not a McCain/Thompson ticket.

Comment by Linda Rayborn

You have it all wrong with the Thompson thing. He should have bailed out before he caused Huckabee to lose (be it ever so slightly) to McCain in SC. Thompson needs to bail and let his supporters go to Huck so he can win in Fla. He will win Ga. and be back on his way to the White House. This set-back in SC has his supporters more determined than ever to raise money for him and help him stay in the race for the duration.

Comment by SCOTT BIGGS

Come on you s-called Fredheads and COME ON FRED! This is the only time in my life that I’ve had reason to believe in only ONE candidate for president and Fred’s the guy. I haven’t lost faith because I’m not going to look at who’s the best choice to beat whom or because I think so and so will be more likely to win, I’ve kept my faith in Fred Thompson because I believe he’s still the best person for the job. So what if he’s not as energetic as Romney, so what if he’s not as out going as Huckabee and as lively as McCain. We must ALL still listen to Fred’s message and stop worrying so about HOW he delivers it. Keep the faith. It’s my belief that if Fred stays in, it will be a good thing for the Republican party base and I also think he’ll surprise a lot of folks. His supporter who have left him will be wanting back and I’m not sure that he should let them back.
GO FRED! Stay in the race and let the numbers speak. I predict that with further candidacy and the support of all the Fredheads out there, his voice will be heard by enough people to make the critical difference in life or death on the campaign trail. Don’t give up the fight.
We’re behind you Fred.
