As we have previously reported Fred Thompson is in Tennessee visiting his 90 plus year old mother who is recovering from an illness

There will be no decisions today as Thompson mulls whether to carry on his bid for the presidency but he is expected to say something definitive tomorrow, probably first thing in the morning.

While no one in the campaign will be surprised if he withdraws they have no idea which way he will go and they do have some money if he should decide to continue.

Aides acknowledge the obvious: SC was very disappointing and 3rd place was not a momentum builder in their view.

On 8 Jan the campaign staff a took pay cut and Thompson knows he owes his staffers some certainty so they can plan for their future, especially younger staffers who need a paycheck.

Fredheads nationwide are waiting too…..

I vote ‘yes’ that Fred Thompson should drop out now. Only reason – he waited to darn late to begin which put him essentially behind the old eight ball in the first place; has poor management in his campaign; is only skewing the numbers and splitting votes for others running. Otherwise, my regret is that he didn’t begin campaign sooner and with what we know is his stronger presentation and stand on issues that matter to the majority of us out here. Not trying to assert that he would have been THE contender, but would have been a much stronger and more influential candidate than he has been so far.

I wonder why Fox News hasn’t spun Fred Thompsons showing in South Carolina in a positive light, much in the same way other candidates shortcomings have been spun in the past.

Your competitor, CNN picked up on the fact that Thomson drew enough converts from the Huckabee camp, as well as appealed to independants in the SC upstate, to significantly narrow the margin between Huckabee & McCain in that region. It proves that Huckabee is a very one-note candidate, he appeals to evangelicals & not much else.

Most importantly, Fred Thompson has made the glaring example of just how fragmented the Republican Party has become, and that the battle is not for the issues, but for the heart & soul of the republican party.

Congrats to Fred Thompson on his SC finish. It was amazing considering the media ‘blackout’ against him.

Fred has alot of support being the only true and honest conservative running this time. And he is the only one who has the potential to exceed Reagan in accomplishment.

Thank you.

Fred’s withdrawal has been much anticipated, especially by the RINOs in this race, but I never thought I’d hear the only “Fair and Balanced” news source trying to imply that his campaign was over before the candidate said so.
By so doing, you are playing into the hands of the Hucksters, who think Fred “stole their votes” by daring to stay in the campaign.

Just remember – “Who dares, wins” – Fred has more support among real republicans than most of the others, with the possible exception of Romney(and at what cost to Romney?).

I look forward to watching you eating your words very soon.

Aside from that, keep up the good work – Fox’s coverage still beats all the others.

Fred Thompson is the only true consertative…he is the ONLY Republican I will vote for. If he bows out of the race…I will not vote….for the first time of my adult life, I will not vote!
He stands firmly on his conservative values.
All of the other “Republican” candidates aren’t true consertative candidates….I do not think that they should even be calling themselves Republicans. They should go back and examine the Republican platform….the American people realize that many of them are people who have flip-floped their views just to make a run for the white house. Studying their records shows such liberal decisions and tendencies.
The other candidates do not share the same veiw of America that I do….and that Fred Thompson does! I hope that on Tuesday Fred Thompson stands up and tells all of America that he is in this contest through the convention and that he intends on being the Republican nominee!!
When this race narrows and people are taking a good look at the canditates…Fred Thompson will shine through and the American people, not the media, will choose the next President! I, for one, am praying that Fred Thompson and his lovely family will decide that American needs him to stay in the race! It would break my heart not to vote….but, I know that I cannot vote for someone I do not trust!

I continue to be horrified with the Fox News “Fair and Balanced” way of covering this election. I have been a loyal Fox watcher for years but stopped watching several months ago after witnessing too often your obvious dislike for the one true Repulican in this race. You have been questioning whether or not Mr. Thompson will drop out of the race since about the day he jumped in and for the life of me I cannot figure out why you continue to throw your airtime and support behind anyone and everyone BUT Fred Thompson.

I notice that you are not running any stories as of late questioning whether or not Rudy will drop out given the fact that he has not made a decent showing in ANY of the primaries to date. (Not to mention his drastic drop in the national polls.) I guess that that would be self defeating given that Fox has been shilling for Rudy for years now.

I do not know what the outcome of this election will be, but I do know that Fox has become a less reliable source for fair Repulican primary info than CNN – ouch. I also know that Senator Thompson represents our best chance at getting back on track as a party and as a country. It is saddening to me that Fox News no longer has such lofty goals, but instead has decided to try to sway the outcome of this race in favor of a man who does not represent (in my honest opinion) the ideals of the Republican party.

In closing, I would like to present one question:

“If Rudy doesn’t have a smashing victory in Florida, will he finally quit the race?????” <>

Carl,

While Fred’s placing in SC was “disappointing”, remember that SC does not ask you when you register to vote what party you want to be affiliated with. They only ask when you vote in a primary. That said, many independents voted this past weekend. Since many here in SC consider McCain to be a RINO, many independents and Democrats who are unsatisified with Hillary and Obama voted in the Republican primary for McCain.

Thompson should stay in the fight until he faces a state that allows only Republicans to vote in their primary. Many believe, such as myself, that he should stick it out until at least Super Tuesday where he is expected to pull at least 3 states.

Please do not put a nail in his coffin too early. America needs a man like him to lead it.

Fred Thompson knows how he will run and has a very realistic view of his competition. He has a very capable campaign team and a massive number of FredHeads nationwide. His position is a strong position for the Republican Party. The party doesn’t get it yet. He will be in Florida and voters can expect him to be a prominent choice when Super Tuesday comes around. You can expect Senator Thompson to continue voicing his positions we heard in Iowa and South Carolina. You can also expect some very strong, innovative positions on the state of our economy. There is no one in the current field, Republican or Democrat, who will project what Fred Dalton Thompson is all about. To paraphrase Fred’s philosophy: Where I stand does not depend on where I am standing!!

You sure would have egg on your face if the Republican nominee isn’t decided until the Convention and it could happen. This is unlike any other presidentail election we have ever had.

Thanks for your continued focus on Thompson’s campaign and for the update.

Although I think you were premature at least in how you worded your previous post by calling that a concession speech, I’m not going to rake you over the coals for it. Live and learn, right? :)

What is so frustrating for so many of us Fredheads and other people who support their “underdog” is this: A self-fulfilling prophecy seems to get enacted when all that is reported is poll after poll after poll. Americans by and large say they don’t like politicians who hold their finger in the air and make decisions based on polling data and public opinion, yet most of us do the same thing when we look at our candidate of choice and because of low poll numbers decide that person is “unelectable”. And because of that, maybe more than any other factor, the person actually becomes, in a way that is hard to overcome, unelectable.

Here’s a question you can ask people out there on the road:

If the person you would really like to see become president isn’t doing well in the polls, and you’ve switched to someone else because they actually have a fighting chance, and suddenly your “underdog” choice began to do well, would you switch your support to them? I think you’d be surprised at how many would say yes.

Fact is, if people would just vote on principle, and not on pragmatism, the underdog has a good chance of winning. In this case, the underdog with the best chance of winning is Fred Thompson. Take the best conservative pieces from all the other Republican candidates, and glue them all together into one, and you will have something like Fred Thompson. The others have weaknesses that will be exploited by the Democrats when the time comes, to give them the best chance at wining. For now though, those weaknesses get a pass from the media and Democratic spokespersons. But blood will be gone after when the candidates are chosen.

The mass media outlets – and even Fox News, which had in the past (but increasingly less so for the past few years, in my opinion) earned a reputation for being a somewhat conservative voice to give balance to all the other liberal media outlets – have shown in this election cycle like none other that they are actively engaged in shaping public opinion to favor their kind of candidate – a liberal who will take this country in a decidedly non-conservative direction.

I hope Fred Thompson goes all the way to the convention, so as to give the conservatives in this country time to look over the pack and start to discover the really big flaws with the so-called “front runners”. Time has a way of changing things in unexpected ways. That is my hope, and I think it is what might keep Fred alive right up to the convention.

Go Fred Go!

Mr. Thompson is and will continue to be my Voice and Vote for the Presidential Candidate.

I do not know how this will all play out, but the stakes are so high that there is still room to maneuver.

The other candidates are still neck and neck, and the issues are making the American Voters sit
Up and take Notice, of the differences.

The Democrat’s are still holding our troops hostage to their Ant-War stance and Angst and
Antic’s on Congress and the Senate. The borders are still Broken!
Illegal aliens are more than probably as in Nevada, Union Fiasco voting for them too.

Some One, Has to Step up to the Plate and Take a Swing at these, and all the other Issues;
For: “WE THE PEOPLE!”

That Man is for me: FRED THOMPSON! Consistent and Dedicated to the American People,
And those who Serve in Uniform for their Defense!

So, Please Mr. Thompson, Take a Second Look at the Issues.
Take a Deep Breath and Run this race as it should be run!

With Integrity, Commitment and Perseverance! And we “Will” ,

Prevail in this Race for the White House!

I am almost 78. Been interestted in polictical affairs since 1935, and have been votting in every election since I could, all my life. If there is no True American Conservative to vote for in this coming General Election THEN this Primary Vote will be my last vote. Many people I know feel the same as I do, even younger ones.

I say – America stop and think. There will a change no matter who gets in, so the change is inevitable. It is time that we start taking care of our own back yard. We need to spend our dollars in America for products made by Americans. Those folks that come to this country and looking for the golden roads to riches need to come here legally. I say it is time we closed our borders for awhile and secured America and then scrutinize those that come here. Every body else deported. Jobs need to be returned back to this country. Business who manufacture outside this country need to disclose that on their packages. We cannot make payments for our homes when the jobs go offshore. We have do this ourselves.
So we need a president to step back with calm and no flashy words and do it. It is great that we as a society can accept the concept of women progressing to better places. But we do not need anymore years of Clinton in our white house. We need someone with some experience. Mr. Thompson is the better candidate for the next four years. We need his sobering and some call boring presence to help this nation heal. Lets’ start a preventive healthcare program with our nation. Mr. Thompson, I feel would be the better man of the job.

Comment by charles purvis

I really don’t understand the legitimacy of all the sensationalism surrounding this unfounded speculation over whether Fred Thompson will stay in or not. There’s only been six contests and Fred has finished third in two of them, second in one of them, not to mention in the states where he had no exposure he still placed fourth in one of those. Sure, he hasn’t placed first yet, but Super Tuesday is right around the corner with alot of closed primaries involved. Watch for McCain’s and Huckabee’s numbers to go down in these states since the no crossover voting rule applies, thus virtually eliminating their large liberal base.

I do however understand the motivation, it’s only too clear. If Fox News had just started the speculation after the S.C. results were in, that would be one thing. But they started pushing the story a week earlier, and even had a poll to that effect yesterday; which by the way, a resounding 61% responded NO. While I understand they’re as much, or more, analysis/discussion as hard news, they still owe it to the public to present this with integrity, or to borrow a phrase, in a “fair and balanced” manner. Besides, as far as what the analysts say, most of them are just carpetbaggers trying to sell their snake oil and other worthless wares; and willing to tell any half-truth to do it.
Speaking of half-truths, Fox News has always complained of the liberals putting out half-truths with no factual backup and the Internet picking it up, then the MSM reporting it as actual fact, truth. Kinda smells of all the unfounded speculations, the innacurate stories you guys have been putting out there about Fred’s campaign; from his announcement of entry to these libelous claims of him dropping out, or in it to help his buddy McCain. These are nothing more than weak, transparent attemps to discourage all present and future potential supporters of Fred, inferring our votes would be wasted. This tactic is worse than push-polling. The media, especially a “fair and balanced” one is supposed to have integrity.
Another evident hypocrisy at Fox News is Bill O’reilly’s hate for “litmus tests”. He rails against them, yet requires candidates to appear on his show to be taken seriously by the public. What color did the paper turn Bill?

Fox News, I’ve watched ya’ll for years faithfully; now I’m ashamed to admit that! Ya’ll have now become part of the slanted MSM that you love to wring your hands over. It’s a sad day in America.

Comment by Norma Parker

What qualities are most important in a future president? Foremost, he must absolutely defend and protect our constitution. He must be committed to the preservation of our freedom. Next is economic know-how. Without a strong economy, nothing else works. So we need a leader who has experience with today’s global market place. Third, we need a leader who will insist that our laws be enforced, our borders protected, and amnesty will not be given illegals. We need an intelligent leader who is committed to education, research and development, and problem-solving for our energy crisis. We need a man of integrity, one who has personally lived socially conservative values all his life. We need a leader who will restore respect and dignity to the office of president and bring about genuine positive change in Washington. The candidate who best meets these requirements if Mitt Romney. He has my vote!

In other words, the McCain advocates at FoxNews are sweating…. and not letting you know this.

I think that of all the people who have put their hat in the ring for President of the United States, Fred Thompson is far and away the best choice. He talks from the heart in plain straight talk. He was the first one to present a plan for many of the problems that face this country. But the liberal media is afraid of him, so they never talk about him or give him any press. It’s unfortunate, but most voters are like a bunch of sheep. They listen to the news people to tell them who to support and vote for. When I ask why someone is not supporting Fred Thompson, it’s just like hearing the news. They will say, “Oh he got in too late” or “He hasn’t got enough passion for the long haul”. To this I say “BULL” the rest of them got in too early. You have to listen to what the man says not what the news people say he said. I for one hope he stays with this race. I think he can still make. I gave him all the money I could give and would gladly give more if I could. I also think that the Conservatives had better get off their butts and get to work promoting Fred Thompson. He needs all of us to shout out our support and drown out the liberal media.

Fred Thompson is the best candidate we have and will stay in the race. He has had new contributions today from supporters and new friends join his website. His candancy has been restricted by reporters telling everyone he needs to get or is getting out or has no fire in his belly. I agree he has no fire in his belly. That is a longtime desire to be president, a do whatever it takes and say whatever it takes to be president. Fred Thompson will not lie to us to be president or change his values to be president. His fire to be president is in a much better place. It is in his heart. Fred wants to be president because of his devotion to this great nation and his love for his children and grandchildren. He knows that the course we are on now cannot sustain this nation. He knows that if the Democrats win that they will make break this nation with their buying of votes with all the entitlement programs. He has more detailed plans than any other candidate that were written from his heart and his lifelong conservative stance.

I am very disappointed with Fox News and their coverage of Senator Thompson. It appears they all have agendas, giving the majority of their air time to McCain, Huckabee or Romney. Most of the time, they don’t even mention Thompson.

Fred has not made his decision yet, but the news media seems to have made it for him and already written him off.

You claim you are fair and balanced…shame on you!

Thanks for the update. It is frustrating, however, to see what appears to be negative reporting about Thompson (e.g., the “farewell” title on an article about a speech that doesn’t appear to be an indication of withdrawal).

The above poll numbers are somewhat misleading. The only one that should be taken seriously is the most recent, Rasmussen. The others are before Michigan and Nevada and SC and don’t reflect the bumps. However Survey USA has McCain up. If you average the two Poll that I mention here, Mitt Romney has the most momentum, since he has seriously closed the gap in Florida to 1/2 point. I would guess that Fred Thompson’s support will be divided equally between McCain and Romney with an edge toward Romney for his support among conservatives. I would bet on Romney for Florida.

Looks like there may be only ONE true conservative left in the campaign if Fred drops out. Hopefully Fred Thompson and Rudi Giulianni will both be gentlement and do the right thing, throwing their support and endorsement for Dr. RON PAUL.

The Republican and Conservative base will NOT accept McCain or Romney.

After the stock markets close tomorrow, perhaps MANY may be rethinking their decision to ignore Ron Paul.

Thompson is the only one in the pack that has shown leadership, not just platitudes. You ask Thompson a question, and you get an answer to that question. And some thought has gone into it! It is not the same old rehearsed line. Should he quit, it will be America’s loss.

Obviously, most of the media is underestimating Fred’s resources and the willingness of his supporters.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to look at the polls and see two obvious things. 1. Mitt Romney leads the latest polls in FL by a large 5 point margin 2. If Fred Thomson drops out of the race the conservative voters he had will likely go to Mitt Romney (Fred may end up beign Mitss VP). I look for a BIG win for Mitt Romney in FL and the polls are turning that way. As usual Fox will discount them and say it is anyone’s race even though Mitt has a large lead. They won’t the ratings that come with a close race and they seem opposed to Mitt though some of them are coming around (Sean Hannity and O’Reilly)

Romney will win because The Democratic and Independent voters cannot support McCain anymore. The Indys and Dems made up 70% of McCain’s vote in SC where will he get the votes in FL? He has betrayed the republican party by siding with the Dems on McCain/Feingold, supported backdoor amnesty deals with Ted Kennedy, voted against the Bush tax cuts, and has declared that the Jobs in MI that are lost aren’t coming back. McCain has a defeatist attitude on Jobs and doesn’t understand how the economy works. He even said he doesn’t know much about the economy and relies on Greenspan…now that the economy is center stage he claims to be an expert. He must have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express on the campaign trail.

Mitt has a vision to turn our economy around and has a PROVEN record of doing so in business and Govt. He is the only candidate on either side who can claim this. He is strong on defense and social issues. He vetoed MA funding for stem cell research. McCain has signed a letter with Dems to ask Bush to increase stem cell research. He has also said he opposes overturning Roe vs. Wade in the near term. He is 70+ and won’t be around for the long term. Go Mitt 08

Fred–stay in–you are the true conservative, and unlike the bozo Huckabee, someone outiside of the South will vote for you.

Stick around at least for two more weeks!! We are working hard for you out here, don’t cut a deal.

We need you for the top spot!

Mr Cameron, Why do you not mention the one true and proven conservative, Dr Ron Paul.
Your question to him in the January 10th debate about his “electibility” was laughable. How can you suggest that a ten term Republican congressman lacks “electibility”? When you compare Dr Paul to the rest of the “Republicans” on stage he does look different- he looks like a winner and a champion of what Conservatism was before the Neo-interpretation poisoned it. Ron Paul finished second in Nevada, a state where the Constitution’s light still shines brightly.

Why no word in your illustrious blog about how Ron Paul raises more funds without lifting a finger than Guiliani, Huckabee, and McCain combined? Perhaps, next time, you should ask Gudy if he is electable. Your question could perhaps follow this line, “Rudy, Where is your support? You have not finished in the top three in any primary and you have no more money, are you electable?”

IF Fred Thompson pulls out of this race, it will be in no small part to the fact that so called “Fair & Balanced” coverage did not apply in his case. Debate moderators all but ignored him for fear of his strong and pointed answers and the talking heads on Fox were too busy trying to prop up a wanna be democrat like Huckabee or a divisive weasel like McCain. For the 1st time in my adult life, I will not vote if Fred ends his campiagn I will also STOP WATCHING FAUX NEWS! I for one am sick and tired of the media playing kingmaker to a bunch of undeserving pretenders!!

I pretty much watch FNC 24/7 – whenever I’m awake. But I couldn’t be more disappointed then I am right now. Please get back to the Fair and Balanced station you use to be. I’m starting to turn to CNN, MSNBC and HN more often, and finding they aren’t much different than you guys are now. We need FNC to be what they claim to be!!

Please report and let us decide. And start being fair to Fred Thompson.

IF FRED STAYS IN, It will be to TAKE AWAY VOTES FROM ROMNEY! McCAIN is THOMPSON’S SECOND CHOICE. What does THAT tell you about HIS COMMITMENT TO FISCAL CONSERVATISM?

I hope Fred Thompson stays in the race. As a GA resident, he was my first pick. I do not know if I trust any of the remaining Republican candidates enough to vote for them. One thing is for certain; if Fred Thompson drops out of the race, I will be voting against Hillary or Obama, not FOR a Republican candidate. I also think it is disgraceful the way all the media outlets and news networks (FOX NEWS ESPECIALLY) has told us, the voting public, who can and cannot get elected. The term electability coming from the media is a joke – have you forgotten that we the people are the ones who make the decision, not the ignorant and agenda based news pundits? I hope to God that the day of the media controlling our votes with itssuppositions and slanted reporting is over.

I have been a long time viewer and supporter of Fox News Channel because of their fair and balanced coverage, but lately I have been disgusted with the disgraceful way Fox News has been spinning opinion against Fred Thompson. Who do you think you are, Fox, to say a candidate has dropped out before he makes the announcement? And who do you think you are to tell us, the voters, who can and cannot get elected? WE MAKE THAT DECISION, not a bunch of idiotic, liberal agenda news reporters. I am so mad right now, I am seeing red. You have disgraced news reporting and journalism, and I am hugely disappointed that Fox has went the way of all the other news networks.
