BREAKING NEWS: Thompson to Quit
Per Carl Cameron:”FOXNEWS has learned that Fred Thompson is returning to his home in McClean VA and plans to withdraw from the race. He has begun calling friends, family and supporters and telling them his campaign is over.” Statement from Sen. Fred Thompson McLean, VA - Senator Fred Thompson today issued the following statement about his campaign for President:”Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.”

Dear Fred Thompson Supporters,
Fred was committed to his principles to the end. For that, I salute him. I am humbly asking his supporters to consider another principled man. He has:
He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.
He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.
He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.
He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.
Please change your support to Ron Paul. I have been reading his speeches in Congress for the last 5 years, and I can tell you he is the real deal.
I hope we can count on your support.
This is an unfortunate development.
Imagine if the media had glommed on to Fred Thompson like it does to McCain, Clinton, and Obama.
America’s choices for POTUS are being manipulated by the media, and unfortunately, Americans are buying in to it.
Sorry to see Fred go. He was the most conservative in the race but he lacked the tenacity to lead the country. Fortunately, this race still has a man that has the conservative values, leadership ability, intelligence, savvy, and tenacity to be a great President. All you Thompson supporters should check out Mitt Romney! http://mittromney.com/
Bloggers,
There’s only one valid criteria by which to measure a Presidential candidate’s suitability for office, and that is: which candidate best represents the essence of the country’s founding documents and the Constitution. Anything less should be viewed as unacceptable to an American.
What happens to Fred’s delegates?
Where to go now?
Huckabee? I’m an evangelical Christian and think Mr. Huckabee is a fine Christian man, but because of his lack of understanding of foreign issues, I can’t vote for him. I also disagree with him on other issues. He is not an option for me.
McCain? I have big concerns. I’m encouraged that he is listening to Phil Gramm on economic issues. I’ll give him a close look, but wisdom says to judge a man by what he has done in the past, NOT what he says he will do in the future. I’ll still watch watch and listen.
Giuliani? He is not conservative enough on social issues. He is not an option for me.
Romney? I haven’t paid enough attention to his understanding of foreign issues, but I think he is good on everything else. I’d like to know more about his commitment to his new pro-life stand. I’ll give him a good look.
I truly hope that Fred Thompson ends up in the mix for VP. He is right on all the issues because he has a correct understanding of government. I’ll feel better about my differences with the presidential candidate if Fred Thompson is on the ticket.
There were two real conservatives in the race- Thompson and Romney. With Thompson out, Romney is the obvious choice.
No matter how much the media tries to spin all the news in favor of McCain, Romney has the most votes, the most delegates, the most states won, the best infrastructure and the most money. Additionally, conservatives won’t buy McCain’s anti-tax cut, pro-amnesty, anti-business and pro-environment stances on crucial conservative issues. He is basically a pro-war liberal, just like his buddy Lieberman who is campaigning with him around the country.
Our party is a great party and it stands for low taxes, strong moral values and a nation of laws, not men. McCain, besides the war, has rejected and disgraced conservativism, and that’s why conservative Floridians (like myself) will reject him and choose Mitt Romney.
Romney will own Hillary in the debates come the general election, as his strong record and agenda of cutting taxes, turning around the economy, having flawless family values and securing our country against illegals will contrast nicely with Hillary’s personal problems, proposals to raise taxes and pro-amnesty agenda.
Go Romney in ‘08!
While I am dissapointed to see Mr. Thompson step out of the GOP race, I am not surprised. What did surprise me was the lack of enthusiasm he himself showed in his campaign, as if it was an obligatory effort to appease those who thought of him as another “Ronald Reagan”. Fact is this – the GOP needs to acknowledge that Mr. Reagan was a once in a lifetime jewel whose values and principles are a very good guide to emulate, but not imitate. I’ve been afforded a couple of past opportunities to meet Fred Thompson in person. He is a fine, decent man who greatly cares about America.
However, in this age of glitter and glitz in the primary races, both parties included, Mr. Thompson’s easy going mannerism just doesn’t appeal to a media field looking for the next big thing. Contrary to what Fox News and other media may allow, Fred’s not a lazy man. Quite the opposite, he is one who takes the time to view the whole picture, rather than flying with the current political wind. Should he be chosen as a VP candidate, I believe he would do well in the campaign, and in the office. Should the Republican nominee, hopefully, be elected come Novemeber, I believe Mr. Thompson would serve well in a position in an incoming administration.
Whatever the case may be, McCain, Huckabee and the rest will do good to stay in touch with Fred frequently, for I feel he is a very accurate pulse when it comes to the viewpoint of Reagan conservatives.
To bad, Thompson was one of the good ones, but with the new way of doing primaries which is kind of stupid, his campaign just didn’t catch on and he didn’t really ever get up to speed himself.
This narrows the even remotely viable choices for me, to Giuliani and Romney. Both great candidates for an independant who see’s the democrats left as the abomination to freedom, for what they are.
I like Rudy and Romney. The scale is tipped for me because of Romney’s success in the real world economy and his functional family.
I’d love to see Romney take on Hillary. Let the country get a look at a family who work together and a picture of Hillary, Bill and all his mistresses.
