Now it can be told- The Thompson story
Back in March of 07 at the CPAC convention in DC several former Fred Thompson Congressional staffers told me Fred Thompson was thinking about a run. Some of his Tennessee cronies had been talking him up too.
I reported first that he was eyeing a White House bid. At the time several insiders told me OFF THE RECORD that it was largely a trial ballon to guage his popularity and float his name as a possible vice presidential nominee. I was sworn to silence.
Those insiders have now lifted the conditions on our conversations. From March to August of 07 through postponed announcement days, staff changes, firings, resignations and general disarray the Thompson camp was stunned by the incredibly positive response and didn’t really know how to manage it. The trial balloon soared mighty high and he found himself being dragged into a race that he was not even sure how to run.
He took third in Iowa and Third in South Carolina, after which his aides openly suggested the #2 slot on the ticket. The circle has been closed, and Fred Dalton Thompson is waiting to see if he gets the call from the eventual nominee.
He has not said who he will endorse. He is friends with John McCain. But if he doesn’t throw his support behind anyone …it makes it easier to be picked by everyone.

Carl,
Would you be so professional as to report the news without bias for a particular republican candidate? I have watched several of your clips on fox news and it is clear to me and many other that you are baised against Mitt Romney, who is leading the race with delegates and the popular vote. I am not sure if you are biased because of a fox mandate or of your own will, but it is distubring either way. In your defense, I have seen the same bias on other pundits shows on fox as well. Stick with the fox motto “we report, you decide.”
Concerned Conservative
[...] Too bad to check, although it’d certainly explain his half-hearted campaigning. He wanted to be VP, was surprised to find major buzz behind a presidential run, took a stab at it to see if he could convert the buzz into votes, and then predictably flamed out when he half-assed it. [...]
The Fredheads are the ones who didn’t get the joke.
please
He is too old to be VP…..that would leave the GOP, 8 years down the line, in the same postion they are in now, with a VP who cannot run for president

Carl Cameron as a political insider? You gotta be kidding.
Well Fred certainly won’t be VP to Huckabee… not that this is a possibility anyway. Yea!!! My question is whether Fred would insist upon the activist style of Cheney or drift into insignificance like Bush I to Reagan. In the meantime, let’s consider Fred for the opening as chairman of the Republican platform committee. If the nominee is McCain, I want to see him running with a conservative platform that disciplines his natural tendencies.
If he only wanted a supporting role, he should have let his agent make a few calls rather than making us watch his screen test in the role of leading man.
So…. You need a new dark horse candidate?
Well, you’re in luck. In Arizona, there are several dozen candidates to choose from due to a strange provision in the state’s election law. To get on the primary ballot, you only needed to file an application.
If you visit ProjectWhiteHouse08.com, you can read (and watch!) the policies of all the dark-horse candidates, from the eye-patch-wearing Republican Sean “CF” Murphy to the ultra-lib, trash-talking, conceptual-artist Democrat Libby “Doctress Neutopia” Hubbard.
And all of them are competing in a “reality journalism” experiment for the Tucson Weekly’s endorsement.
Tomorrow night’s the official Project White House debate, which you can watch online through ProjectWhiteHouse08.com
Stop on by!
Aides say this… anonymous sources say this…. BS Cameron! Until you name names or they go on the record, I don’t believe a word you say.
I am sick of your smirk and you look completely ridiculous in those sunglasses. You might ask “What does that have to do with anything?” “Or, how immature is THAT?” Well, think about this… “Thompson’s lackluster campaign.” The ridiculously STUPID “No fire in the belly” remark… Or “Old, tired, lazy…” all the comments that you and Fox News rattled off again and again as if it advanced anything constructive. Oh wait! I guess it did! It helped push your agenda along.
I am sick of Fox News. I haven’t watched Fox News since November of 2007. Prior to that, my TV was positioned on Fox morning, noon, and night. Fox News now equals MSM in my book. I counted on you to give us fair and balanced coverage of all the candidates until the candidates decided to drop out. That is not any news outlet’s job - to nudge out a candidate by marginalizing, making fun of, or ignoring them altogether.
If you aren’t now, you (Fox News) were in the tank for Rudy Giulliani. Perhaps you scaled back your obvious zeal for Rudy after the Judith Regan lawsuit/Bernie Kerik fiasco, and the Rudy/security detail/accounting scandal broke. Perhaps that’s why Rudy’s been lying low knowing full well Fox News will come to the rescue and bring him back from almost total obscurity.
Rudy has been a missing person for WEEKS and his poll numbers have plummeted. Why haven’t you been asking “when is Rudy going to drop out?” Because you knew full well that Fox News was going to rescue him.
It is NOT fair that candidates are not given equal time during debates. Just who do you (Fox News) think you are to decide a certain candidates issues are more important than another?
Fox News must believe your viewers are stupid, ignorant, or otherwise uninformed. Sadly, many are. But I’m telling you, I am NOT and I have many, many friends who feel as I do. You are not to be trusted. Read the blogs and see what people think of Fox News!
Well, if this was his plan all along, it was one of the crappiest things on the planet.
To set out to deceive people is disgusting and to string them along, all this time, is a deplorable action.
I would be ashamed of Fred Thompson if this were true.
If we could not take him at his word then, there is no reason to take him at his word ever.
Fred has stated that he is not interested in being VP. HE is a man of honor and honesty, so I choose to believe him. The media has not heitated to distort and manipulate everything about him, so I choose not to believe the media. He stands on his record, the media will have to stand on theirs.

[...] a scary thought, yet hard to believe. Sure, Fred hesitated to go after McCain, and Carl Cameron claims Thompson was vying for a VP slot. But few Fredheads I’ve met can claim to be McCain [...]
Keep your options open, Fred. This great country needs you.
Carl Cameron will do anything to get someone to read one of his articles!…
This is total hogwash …and the people who even give this article a second thought
need immediate medical attention. Fred never had the ambition for VP…..there isn’t a candidate on the GOP primary ticket who would stand on the principles Fred does. He does not waver on any conservative principle and would not stand with anyone who did. Haven’t we all learned how really dogmatic he was/is about conservatism????and, the others are just now starting to take lessons! Fred is his own man and you can believe no one is ever going to sway this man to pander for anything or anyone….Get real Carl!!!!! nice try/but, bone up on the Huckster and get some real news and feedback..
Signed:
A life long Arkansan and a Souther Baptist to boot.
It’s kind of sad to see how McCain and Thompson “tag-teamed” Mike Huckabee in South Carolina. Thompson campaigned almost entirely in the Huckabee counties and spent much of his time “knocking” Huckabee even though he probably differs on more ISSUES with McCain. He hardly said a single thing about McCain. As many Washington insiders know, McCain and Thompson are VERY good friends ( they spent time together on Fred’s HONEYMOON! ). There’s still time to set this right and elect Mike Huckabee as our party’s nominee on Feb. 5th and beyond!
Come one Carl….anything for a story…isn’t it time you and the other media left Fred alone.
He gave a lot of good information on conservative principles to this country and schooled his
other little running mates on a lot they didn’t know or had forgotten…The man would have
been a great President. Just wait till 2009 and then you will remember what might have been.
Hey –
I am not a fan and I am a registered Democrat who votes Republican. I just thought you might want the rest of the world to know the following facts (which will turn this year’s election upside-down):
Mitt Romney used to own Bain Capital (our parent company); he still has hidden ties to Bain Capital. Bain Capital owns HCA of America, Outback, Clear Channel, Texas Instruments, etc. Fred Thompson has substantial ties to HCA. HCA is HUGE. BAIN is HUGE.
Who do you think Fred will endorse? Mitt is BUYING this election. Just thought you might like to know. Do your research – you will put it together.
Best regards,
Please keep my name confidential.
Our nation needs Romney. He has spent his life fixing problems, from failing businesses to the Winter Olympics to making significant progress as governor of a state largely controlled
by democrats. He has learned to surround himself with other intelligent persons and to get the big picture before making snap judgments. Romney has demonstrated the leadership, intelligence and personal character to be an excellent president. Please support Romney so that some of his outstanding business and leadership skills can be applied to our national government.
Well, the good ole USA lost the opportunity to elect a President of whom we could have been very proud. Personally, I do not buy the idea that Fred Thompson would accept a VP slot UNLESS he had guarantees that he would be an integral part of the decision-making process. He has too much to contribute to the deliberations on policy to be anyone’s yes - man.
Which makes your “reporting” on Thompson all the more disgusting. You were obviously trying to shape the news, predict the news, so that when Fred dropped out you could say “See, I told you so”. You should have disclosed you had inside information. If in fact what you’re saying is true.
Is it too much to ask you and your cohorts in the media to just report what’s going on, report the news rather than influence the news? “We Report, You Decide” ? Give me a break. How about “We Speculate, You Decide? It’s much more accurate.
Fox has lost a lot of credibility. You’re part of the reason. I will now speculate on YOUR future. Watched MSNBC lately?

That is such a load of self righteous garbage!

He was a loser from day one….
man i liked fred at first he was a great guy. but i just couldn’t see him as a real feasible candidate; no fire (at least not until a couple weeks ago. too late. and against the wrong guy). i looked for hundreds of hours at each candidate’s record. finally it became clear that mike huckabee stood out way in front of all others.
but too bad, fred spoiled mike’s chance for a sc win. but now if mike can pick up most of his supporters, he has a huge chance.
it’s gonna be either mac/huck 08 or the opposite. just watch.
GO MIKE!!!!
So, let me get this straight Carl;
You’re saying these “insiders” lifted your vow of secrecy for Thompson’s run at a vice presidency knowing that the millions of conservatives who honestly and sincerely believe in the man yet who are now devastated and heartbroken wouldn’t feel outrageously betrayed by him for doing this?? Are you kidding yourself because no one here is buying it.
1) “Insiders” devoted to Thompson would never release you from your vow especially before he was asked to run as VP nor would they want this released afterwards or it would certainly doom any candidate who asked him to run on their ticket. Therefore, what you’re offering us is ludicrous at face value. ( Overlooking the fact Thompson was the only honest and truthful candidate with principles in the race and now your “confession” offers he’s not…I’ll take his long record of honesty over your “confession” any day Carl. )
2) Your coverage of Fred Thompson before John Mills was fired was nearly outright praise of everything the man said ( rightly so ) while the rest of the MSM invented spin as they couldn’t find anything in his records to use against him. AFTER Mills left, working only two weeks on Fred’s campaign, you and Brit Hume then spoke about Fred as if he were a red-headed stepchild…the difference in coverage was a night & day difference that likely gave blind folks the hope their sight was returning because they could see it.
I think you better reconsider your reasoning here Carl or is this merely your attempt at stopping McCain from asking Thompson to be his VP? ( Not that Fred would accept it if he did. )
Any reasonable view of this “confession” would correctly lead to the only sane deduction of who these “insiders” must actually work for…Ed Rollins would be the logical employer. Then and only then would this story of yours make any sense at all.
You should take more care in how you write down your phone numbers in your little black book as they can get quite confusing who’s working for whom, eh?
Glad I could help solve your singular problem, it is elementary my dear Cameron.
This “scoop” is no better than gossip: One unnamed source. I know this for sure: the so-called insider is no friend of Fred’s.
just curious…what is the criteria for making a comment here? I have read several pro-Fred comments on other sites that folks attempted to leave here that mysteriously didn’t make the cut…oh well, guess this one won’t either!
Carl–he also got second in Wyoming.
There are some states West of the Mississippi.
Just because you fail to report on us in the West does not mean that we don’t exist.
I like Fred and will be voting for Mitt Romney when we finally get to caucus in February…
Florida, don’t screw this up–we need someone with real-world business experience, someone who can turn around the mess that is Washington DC. Mitt Romney
Fix it Mitt.
[...] debate contributions. But there was no real rationale for his campaign – unless, as Fox’s Carl Cameron, suggests intriguingly he was really running for veep. So who will benefit from his [...]
Carl,
The fact that you use “cronies” to characterize Thompson’s Tennessee supporters highlights the fact that you’ve hated Thompson since the beginning, and, for some reason, so has the entire Fox Network.
I have an idea….let’s just all vote for who the media tells us to vote for, or better yet, let’s vote for whoever is leading in the “polls” at any particular time. That way we’re sure to not have to do any actual HOMEWORK on the candidates and what they stand for.
You, and your “network” sicken me.
Carl, you apparently shared your “oath of silence” with the powers that be at Fox, which explains why they ignored, no, sabbotoged his entire campaign.
Sory Campaign Carl,
I don’t but it. Frec has too much loyality, integtity and his core values would not allow him to deceive his supporters or the citizens of this country.
Yeah, sure we believe you. Your (FOX’s) agenda is showing Carl.
As a supporter of Fred Thompson, I ask you to provide your sources! If this is true then Fred Thompson deceived his supporters. Until you show your sources, I will not accept your report as fact.
I will NEVER vote for McCain.
Was Thompson Aiming For Vice President?
According to Fox News’ Carl Cameron, Thompson was initially aiming for a Veep nomination, but got…
Popularity: unranked [?]…
More the Fred for VP thing here: http://www.politiporn.com
He never was in it for the presidiency. He is more Dick Cheney then Ronald Reagan.
Hey Carl! I saw you in New Hampshire when Gov. Mitt Romney’s plane landed a few weeks ago!
I wanted to approach you, but was a tad star-struck. Good analysis of the race so far, always love watching you on Fox!
Please Carl, is there no one you will SCHILL for.
Who is it this time Rudy? or Myth?
Someone give you permission the throw a bone the the Fredheads?
Carl is alright! He maybe goofy but I am glad he is revealing the truth. Thompson supporters feel used. This plan was known by many and for what its worth…Thompson was manipulateed into thinking he would be VP. This is a modern greek tragedy. Get off Carl’s back. The man told the truth and thank God he kept his word to not reveal until now. I respect Carl for being honest.
fred gets the VP slot if mccain is nominated, it doesn’t matter to me, i will vote for the conservative party candidate as no republican qualifies as a conservative. if we lose there will be a shakeout in the republican party, and we can get rid of the ‘moderates’ like romney, mccain, guilianni, and huckabee, all who suddenly find conservative values at election time. are there any goldwaters out there? i hope so, in your heart you know he’s right.
Guys, lighten up. I know most of you have never been to journalism school, but unnamed sources is common, especially in politics. Also “off the record” conversations are practically sacred to a reporter. If Cameron had reported those off-the-record statements, he’d have been shut out of every political campaign. It would have destroyed his career. And then nobody would tell us what’s going on.
Keep up the good work, Carl!
You are taking a lot of unwarranted flack here Carl. I have seen no evidence such as what they suggest here, and in fact find that FoxNews is very much unbiased.
Want bias? Check out Anderson Cooper last night, dissing Mitt for being ebonically inept with a black kid ( Mitt was shown asking the kid about his “bling bling”, and singing ” who let the dogs out”.
It was a little ineptitude on Mitt’s part, trying to reach out to African-Americans as a rich white LD Saint ( we can’t hide where we come from, or pretend we can relate if indeed we cannot). Still, Cooper’s cohort chortled ” Who let Mitt out”, which is blatently biased reporting.
And how about the hands-off reporting on the Clintons? My Goodness, this couple should be fair game for everything from Whitewater to Filegate, the McDougals to Lewinsky. What, they get a free pass because that is old news? I don’t think so, because one lie begets another.
A McCain/Thompson, a Romney/Thompson…and come to think of it,
even a Rudy/Thompson ticket would work, I think. He’s in a sweet spot
for the #2 slot…He just has to prove to them that he’ll be a hard campaigner..
Something he didn’t show for his Pres. nomination bid..jmo
Love your reports, Carl!
Carl - Thanks for the insight.
Those who accuse you of bias simply do not unserstand that everyone thinks you are biased against their candidate. I think you’re doing a great job.
I am glad Thompson is out of the race for whatever reason. He seems like a fine candidate, but he was not going to win and, consequently, kept muddying the waters. As for who gets his votes, it’s anybody’s guess. I don’t think we want it to be Myth Romney though. He really is the worst candidate of them all. His business experience will be the very thing that kills Republicans in the general election, as it will become story after story of the thousands of jobs he cut at the various companies which were brought. All the explaining in the world will not counter the weight of sad stories of the people who lost their jobs when Mitt bought the company. Mitt is the one Republican sure to lose in the general election.
Fred - we need him somewhere! He’s the only real conservative who ran, the only one I wanted to vote for and the only one whose sign is STILL in my yard.
I plan to still write in his name in February when we have our primary elections.
I’m so sad his mother became so terribly ill and he had to pull out of the race.
But it shows where his priorities lie and I respect him for it. Surely, if his mother hadn’t become ill, he’d still be running and I know he would have won a few states, at least.
I still feel very strongly that all our primaries - every single one of them - should be on the same day. Why do we allow Iowa and New Hampshire to have such a strong affect on our country’s future every 4 years? I mean….at least they are very dissimilar, so there’ some balance there…..but, when you really think about it, it’s quite ridiculous.
It’s very disappointing, to say the least, that I won’t get to see the full list of candidates listed on my ballot and we even moved up our primary!! Ugh!
Fred is needed in this country. Whether it’s President or VP, I’m 4 Fred!
And of COURSE he can be President in 8 years or another 4 years!
He’s healthy and hearty and age has nothing to do with the ability to lead. If someone as great as Fred were just 40, I’d want to vote for him or her, too.
Fred is still “it” in my book.
FredHead until I’m Dead,
Beth
The most unbelievable thing is, the ones that buy into this load of garbage about Fred.
The ones that do, were not Fred supporters to begin with.
The ones that don’t think that the media is bias are clueless. All medias are bias, against candidates that their companies do not support.
Seems to me that there was only one candidate who, never changed his position, never pandered to the crowd, he told them what they needed to know, not what they wanted to hear.
Fred was the only true conservative on all the issues. All the others are conservative only when it suits them.
Ron Paul, is a isolationist, not a conservative.
well,Fred Thompson is a greater American than you all think. He never would sell out his principles and honesty for anything. He could have won and as screwy as the state of affairs is,he could still win.No one but the most shallow of people believes any candidate now running is worth two cents.I hope somebody starts a new draft of Thompson again, maybe he will decide to save us from stupidity after all.
McCain will win the nomination, and then the conservatives will be forced to get behind him. At that point he will not need Thompson. Leiberman would top the short list in my opinion, for the obvious crossover votes necessary to beat the Clinton juggernaut.

Prove it, Carl.
From “my sources” close to the campaign Fred is not interested in being a broker at a brokered convention nor is he interested in the position of VP. He is returning to private life and focusing on his family.
If Fred is offered a position as VP, I’m sure he would consider it, but at this time he is not interested.
Ah,Doccochran, you’re right but,you forgot to mention the reason He might win…The guy is a buisnessman with a lot of money and forsight…You see, if you have money and foresight you can buy companies like Clear Channel, and make sure that those in the media that would have interest in moonlighting on radio, and that sit in influential anchor positions and are willing to compromise whats good for you me and the rest of the American people,by helping Romney get elected….We’re a people, who apparantly appear to have these little rings in our noses that suggest that we can be lead down this road of hypocrisy…..in other words He is trying to outlast the other candidates and buy the presidency…but like you said come election time, the very tactics he uses, the uncompassionate way he puts his money before the very livelyhood of people, and the lies it takes to accomplish, things like this, will convince people to vote democrat
I’m sure that the people that vote democrat will be the first to complain about the taxes, but somtimes you have to sacrifice,to not lose everything. Not voting at all is a vote for the Dems…Writing somebody else in that can’t win is the same thing, but if thats what we have to chose from I’ll,be staying home or writing in
I could say anything and claim it was from an unnamed source. That doesn’t mean that what I said was true or the my unnamed source was not lying through his/her teeth.
Fred might make some candidate easier to vote for, but there are a few that even he cannot help. McCain is one of those candidates.
What is wrong with Fred wanting to be VP, and you knowing it all along? It seems like that is understandbale and it seems to fit. Actually, I was excited when I heard Thompson would be entereing the race, for like a lot of people, I was searching for a conservative candidate who spoke and believed like I do. I was disappointed when he seemed not to be interested in the office for which he was seeking, and that he appeared “lazy” and non interested. Now, that I have read your article it makes sense. Sure, I had an idea he was shooting for another position, but it never occured to me, he was eyeing from the start. So Carl, unlike some, I am still a devoted Fox fan, and read your blog all t he time. However, I must confess my brother and I do indeed like “Morning Joe” on MSNBC, for Joe Scarbough really knows and talks politics, tell your boss he ought to hire him for Fox!!!
I can’t imagine that anyone with a sense of decency could support Fred Thompson for dogcatcher, now that it’s been revealed that his entire charade of running for President was intended not for the good of the conservative cause… not for an honest challenge to the other candidates… but merely to “soften up” the field to his desire to become Vice-President.
Thompson’s persistent attacks on Mike Huckabee were not based on principle or philosophy: rather on the fact that Huckabee was outshining him at every turn and was a logical choice for Vice-President, should he not get the nomination himself. His ruse actually caused Gov. Huckabee first place (easily) in South Carolina, which, had he won, would have certainly changed the entire picture of the remainder of the race.
Fred Thompson obviously deceived many people, completely changed the course of events from what they should have been, and shown himself for what he really is: A run-down old man who cares nothing about anything or anyone except himself. I hope his mother is proud!
Hi Carl, You have some Romney haters here. Doccohran says Mitt would be a bad choice. Well…what do we really have Doc? The only conservative with any brains is Mitt. No matter what you say, the man has good business sense and would be good for America. He is success story. Do the Republicans really want McCain? I would vote for Obama over McCain! I want change, not 4 more years of the same spending and inaction concerning illegal aliens. Rudi and Mike are not really in it anymore, so I say go for it Mitt. People who bring up Mitt’s religion are silly. Let’s not bring religion into this. His religion is no more a cult than the Southern Baptist’s religion. I saw pictures of Huckabee trying to either save, or heal someone just the other day. Give me a break! We want a leader; not a preacher! We don’t want a maverick president like McCain either.

Credibility: Fred Thompson vs. Carl Cameron?
One’s lying self-aggrandizing unprofessional hack who puts on a fair and impartial facade in front of a camera while reading scripted lines — and the other is an ex-Presidential candidate.
I believe Fred, not Carl and his assorted group of unnamed sources (from an opposing campaign?)
Geez, Carl — yes, Fred did your friend Jim Mills wrong and that was a stupid move. But to let that interfere with how YOU do YOUR job is just unprofessional. Get counseling and grow up.
It is a very sad day when the country had a chance for the Right President at the Right time, that we now have lost our chance to support him. Fred Thompson is what the Republican Party as well as the country needed in order to get back to what the founding fathers saw for this country.
