Mitt’s Moment
Polls show Mitt Romney could win the Florida Primary. John McCain is under attack, much as he was in 99 and 00. Rudy Giuliani’s slide appears to have halted - so far there is no sign of an uptick out of third.
The timing may be perfect for Romney. His business experience is proving a great asset with the economy dominating much of the contest. He is a tireless, disciplined, smart campaigner. His aides and strategists are top notch. His policies eare fully developed. His rhetoric is tight. His Florida campaign is centered in the triangle between Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa where they expect about 57% of the GOP votes to be.
Romney in so many ways has done it the old fashioned way. Any successful candidate in a competitive race for office is going to initially need three things; Message, Money and Organization. Check.
When running for president add; get to Iowa and New Hampshire early and often, have a reasonable claim to your party’s political base in the early states, don’t be the early front-runner, take some risks, survive a few bad patches with a comeback, have dumb luck, then time your peaks for when people are in voting booths. Check, Check, Check, Check.
Mitt could be having a moment. In the first polls after South Carolina Romney was ahead. McCain got the Palmetto state bounce and inched ahead. Rudy tanked. Fred bailed -which helped Huckabee, who according to Mason Dixon could beat Rudy for third.
Now republicans coast to coast are unleashing on McCain: wrong on the Bush tax cuts, amnesty, campaign finance reform. He collaborates too often, they say, with Ted Kennedy et al. And for years in the senate they say he has been an unreliable republican, largely disliked for angry outbursts and bullying.
Wait. Because McCain is highly respected by the public his rivals are loath to attack hard. Enter the anti-McCain forces. They range from Rudy and Romney boosters to the uncommitted. The only common denominator is they appear to detest McCain. DO NOT rule McCain out. Seniors and veterans and retirees LOVE HIM. There is still some South Carolina wind in his sails. It is a tossup.
Rudy is in trouble. At every event some supporter will tell me about being worried that he’s fading. Seniors, vets, and transplants, in South Florida like McCain and Romney too. Crowd members repeatedly note Rudy’s absence from the news for the last month and lament that he did not compete with others elsewhere.
All politics is local but not always a winner. Hizzoner’s support for a National Catastrophic Insurance fund is very popular but Floridians aren’t rubes. The land of recount injunctions and Supreme court appeals is not likely to miss so blatant a pander.
In short:
Governor Charlie Crist pushed a measure through the legislature aimed at lowering skyrocketing insurance costs in hurricane plagued Florida. Premiums may have stabilized but state taxpayers are now on the hook if the insurance companies can’t handle a future disaster. Crist now wants Washington to establish a $250 billion National Catastrophic Insurance fund that would ostensibly put taxpayers in all 50 states on the hook for Florida (and other states) should bailing out the insurance companies require catastrophic state tax hikes.
Rudy has signed on to it. Critics in Florida and elsewhere think its doomed as a big government risk guarantee for disaster insurance, funded by taxpayers in 50 states.
Giuliani has spent a lot of time around the I-4 corridor and his aides are talking up big crowds. That’s ironic since in big states like Florida crowd size is not really that relevant. Rally enthusiasm and attendance is a good yardstick in early retail states. Rudy did a bit of it in NH, but nothing compared to Mitt and McCain. The most stunning thing about Rudy’s support is that in Southern Florida (from Boca Raton to Miami Beach..affectionately known as the 6th buro of NY for all the Big Apple snowbirds and transplants) McCain leads by 10% in the Miami herald Poll.
Still Rudy is a respected and much loved hero. His staff is working triple time and they are crackerjack pro’s. Ever optimistic, doggedly loyal, disciplined message managers, they all hate to lose and are not familiar with it.
DO NOT BE shocked by a final Rudy surge before Tuesday.
As for Governor Romney; Michigan fine tuned his economic message and its clicking in Florida. He has run a text book air war. Several months ago he began with bio ads. They evolved into issue ads. Those turned to contrast ads. Then back to bio ads and now closing arguments. No other candidate came close to such a well run campaign. When the message needed to evolve, it did. When he lost in Iowa and New Hampshire adjustments followed.
Sure he has probably spent more than $30 million of his own money but since when is personal wealth (and spending it) a problem among republicans? Sure he has flip-flopped on key GOP issues in the last five years, but his bent has been decidedly rightward and his rivals have plenty of policy deviations from GOP orthodoxy of their own.
Anything can happen. The polls could be wrong. Romney could win Florida and tank February 5th. McCain could EASILY win Florida. Rudy could re-surge.
But if Romney pulls out a victory in Florida he will have arrived. His talking point will no longer be that he won Michigan and leads in delegates, it will be that for the first time there is a clear front-runner heading into February 5th, and he’s it.

Mitt is already the frontrunner in many people’s books. Can McCain really rely on a 3% victory in South Carolina over a Huckabee that was weakened by three other conservative candidates? (His victory in 2008 was poorer than his loss to Bush in 2000 in the same state.)
Even more disconcerting, McCain lost among New Hampshire Republicans. It was the liberals and independents who put him over the top. (Romney won the Republican vote.)
Mitt Romney is the concensus Reagan conservative. (Now that Fred is out of the race.) No one else can put together the strength of the economic conservatives, the social conservatives, and a strong national defense.
With conservative leaders like Rush Limbaugh swearing never to vote for McCain under any circumstances, there is a true backlash against him going on from which he will not recover. (I have decided to vote Green Party if McCain is the nominee.)
Mitt ftw.
Mitt’s moment take 2:

I’m just coming across this “corner” for the first time and am a little confused; why are you writing in sentence fragments that sounds like a fifth grader wrote them? Can’t you make out complete thoughts, avoid cliches and not make random comments with no substance to back it up. I especially liked “Anything can happen.” Thank you for that incredible insight. “Mitt could be having a moment.” You really go out on a limb with that one.
I really don’t mean for this to be mean-spirited, I’m just honestly confused why you’re writing like a 5th grader. Apologies for sounding mean - don’t want it to come across as a personal attack, I just was hoping for a little more from a professional.
Also, I don’t expect you to actually post that since you wouldn’t want to put anything that’s at all critical so…I guess you can just take that as feedback and an area for development.
Watching the debate on MSNBC was amazing. There was clearly not a fair distribution of time and questions given to the various candidates. I was baffled by how obvious it was that the producers of the show did not want the viewers to take Ron Paul seriously. The post-show commentary did not mention him at all. Thankfully they did show the text-message vote results which had Mitt at 41%, Paul at 40%, and the rest at well below him. Given how obvious the propaganda was (”You Will Vote For Mitt; Paul Is Not To Be Taken Seriously”) I was surprised that they let us see the text-message results. Since it seems that the people are starting to wake up to Paul’s message, I’m waiting for the entrenched media’s strategy to change from ignoring him to ridiculing him.
Carl Cameron is naive and shockingly biased toward Romney, a truly lightweight toy candidates in the GOP race of wind-up midgets. I guess shallow toy journalists favor shallow toy candidates.
Carl, there you go … you now making sense again!
See all you needed was a nice Florida breeze!
Welcome back to reality!
Polls show Cameron may be out of a job after the election by 90%. Are you sir, employable? Cuz we know a Pulitzer is definitely not in your future.
“There is still some South Carolina wind in his sales.” Sales is about all this pitch is! Learn to spell, Fox.
Romney is the only full-spectrum conservative with a chance of winning the GOP nomination and uniting the party.
McCain’s an independent. Some Democratic leaders are on record saying he considered the vp spot on the Kerry ticket in 2004.
Huckabee and Giuliani would pull apart the Republican coalition from opposite ends, with Giuliani alienating social conservatives and Huckabee putting off economic and foreign policy conservatives.
At a time when voters yearn for competence, Romney offers proven executive skill, excelling in everything he has done in his professional life.
He is an exemplary family man and patriot whose character matches the high office he is seeking.
The only problem is Romney will lose the general election to Hillary, whereas McCain would probably beat Hillary…
I don’t want to be pedantic, but it’s “loath” not “loathe”
Mitt owned the debate tonight. He was cleaver, right n task and for the firsttime looked relaxed. I believe he will carry Fla. and then springboard to sweeping wins on super Tues.
To derail im now he’ll have to have a major ‘foot in the mouth’ moment.
Mitt Romney was prepared for this debate, his timing is perfect and clearly he is moving into the front runner position. The MSNBC commentators really hammered Mitt with the questions but he rolled with the punches. Rudy Giuliani’s ideas are sketchy at best and his choice of campaigning in Florida only looks to be a bad one. John McCain’s momentum winning in South Carolina, thanks to Fred Thompson has diminished. McCain carries baggage from his tax cuts, amnesty, etc.. the crowd against him is growing. What is ironic is the New York Times endorsing John McCain. The democratic machine is promoting McCain for the republican nomination. Why is that? Chances are he will lose running against Hillary Clinton in my opinion. Democrats would love to see McCain as the nominee.
Huckabee is eloquent an articulate with his answers but he is running out of money and I’m afraid that will not help him in Florida. It will take much more cash to make a dent in super Tuesday. Mitt Romney could be the front runner after next Tuesday. He is the cash cow. The Republicans may finally have a Candidate to rally behind soon enough.
Romney is a strong candidate-relatively. He has liabilities, but they are less than his rivals.
-McCain is noticeably old, and divorced his wife for a younger, better-connected, and wealthier woman. He is also bitterly opposed by the party core.
-Huckabie makes crazy foreign policy errors and has a son who tortured and hung a dog at summer camp, and then was recently caught with weapons in an airport.
-Giuliani’s sexual escapades and vengeful behavior as mayor make him a horrible general election candidate–not mentioning his feud with the NYFire Department, who believe his 9-11 actions left much to be desired.
-Ron Paul is not a serious candidate.
So, that leaves us with Romney. He’s changed his mind on abortion, but otherwise has been as consistently conservative as anybody else. He’s a Mormon, and that, sadly, effects is electability, but is not as serious a liability as McCain’s age, or any of the other candidates’ defects listed above.
And, on the merits, Romney would be the best President of them all. He’s actually made his name in the private sector as a turnaround artist, fixing corporations, etc. He’s exactly what we need in the Presidency.
Romney claims to have saved the Olympics in 2002, but with a $1.2 billion federal bailout, anybody could have saved the Olympics. Romney didn’t save the Olympics; the taxpayers did.
This article is mostly correct factually but it feels like it was written by a junior high school kid. The drama and sensationalism is so non-journalistic I had to check a couple times to make sure this was actually a fox new affiliate on top.
To recap, I do not disagree with anything you say, only how you say it. But to quote a great american “I may not agree with a word with you say, but I will defend with my life your right to say it”.
God bless america,
dan
Not even a mention of Ron Paul? Wow.
I’m not sure Romney could claim to be the front runner if he wins Florida. The republican field is too fragmented for Romney to score a decisive win. If the media spins Romney’s victory as a defining victory, he could get a lot of attention in the Feb. 5th states. But can you really count out Guliani in states like New York and California? He’s been running ads there for a while. And blue state republicans love McCain. I don’t we’ll have a clear winner after the dust settles on Tsunami Tuesday. I’d look out for a deal to be negotiated after Feb. 5th securing enough delegates (McCain and Huckabee?) or a brokered convention - that would be worth the wait.
I like Carl’s honest first hand reporting. You see so little balanced reporting in the media today. It is Mitt’s moment! He has the qualities to be president. With the economic worries of this week I Mitt’s business acumen has given him a big boost. There are some good men in the GOP race but Mitt is the true conservative and stands head and shoulders above the other candidates.
Romney has it together. He would be the most capable president we have had in a long long time. Why don’t we put someone intellegent and succesful in private business in Office. He can turn the economy around as well as everything else in the wasteful government.
ROMNEY FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!
WE NEED YOU!!!!!!!
I have to agree. I have been a McCain supporter during this campaign, but I have come to realize Romney is the best chance the party has of winning in November. I think your article is right on point in so many ways.
I’m a “reagan democrat” and the only Republican I would vote for would be Mitt Romney. Romney’s savvy and integrity sets him apart from all candidates in the field. His politics are that of the American people. He understands and humbly respects the American Constitution, and the American Dream of ALL Americans. He is not a sound-bite candidate, but a man with a plan. He is a man that understand the meaning of hard work. A God fearing man, who humbly respects the humanity in all of us, and earns the respect of all of us. Those who criticize him and scorn him are the ones who are blinded by their own limited greed for power. Romney is simply the best candidate out there. We should all know by now what the cost of listening to political propaganda is. Don’t let yourself be fooled by fear, hatemongering, and the powerful interest of certain groups. Hope is good, but waiting for a check in the mail is not what good government is. It is about all of us working together to raise our quality of life, for caring for our children, our elderly, and our sick. It is about a candidate who is passionate, compassionate, and has strength of heart. Mitt Romney is Presidential Material. In a field of many there is a President, and others who think they are. It is not enough to want to be President, you must have vision, intellect, charisma, honesty, and a sound social and more than a band-aid economic plan. Mitt Romney is the only Republican I would vote for.
I know it’s always possible, but Mitt won’t win Florida. I’ve lived here for almost 40 years and this isn’t a Mitt Romney state. He doesn’t belong to us. Floridians don’t want a Mitt for President. If Mitt does win The Republican primary The Republians are in deep trouble.
It’s not surprising that Romney could take Florida, but just like Team Romney, I wouldn’t count Guiliani or McCain out any time soon. Only Guiliani has been a straight-shooter when it comes to dealing with Mitt and his Mormon religion. Huckabee’s underhanded Anti-Mormon “questions,” are just slimy and just fail to be about any of the real issues that our country faces. McCain’s mother is a bigot plain and simple–put her in a white hood and robes and she’d be in her element. Does anybody really want someone like McCain or Huckabee who is so deeply ingrained in prejudices to lead our country? Let’s put an end to the hate that keeps us as a nation divided and repair our hurting economy, win the war on terror, and promote domestic peace and tranquility.
–The Kohutekcomet
I think Mike Huckabee is by far the most consistent conservative candidate. Just go to trueromney.com to find out how inconsistent Mitt Romney is.
McCain was lost when Ron Paul asked him a question on the economy. He obviously avoided trying to answer the question by defering to “close friends” and “allies” that are economists… he proved that the earlier statement he made concerning his lack of understanding the economy was accurate. Really poor performance from McCain.
Huckabee, always the country bumpkin, made a few Forrest Gump one liners that were cute… other than that, he had nothing. His comment that the tax rebates would be better spent on repairing highways and still provide sufficient stimulus to the economy were very telling… he doesn’t get it on the economy either.
Huckabee’s “Fair Tax” proposal is Unconstitutional and even if passed by Congress and signed by the President it would be declared as Unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, who would have no other choice on the matter.
Giuliani looked good. His answers were well thought out and well delivered. I thought it was one of Giuliani’s finest performances in the debates.
Romney really showed his stuff last night. He seperated himself from the pack and demonstrated the presence, leadership, and knowledge that has made him successful at nearly everything he has attempted.
Romney was on target, well spoken, literate, and hit the issues on the head.
In short… Romney looked and behaved like the President of the United States.
Ridiculous, ridiculous. So how does one choose between this wonderful (gag) group? Perhaps, we need to pay attention to the two breakins being reported at Mitt’s Boston office. There is such overwhelming love. Actually, Mitt took this debate hands down. McCain looked so scripted that if anyone interrupted, he would lose his place. Get ready, comedy central.
It seems that all Ron Paul supporters can’t see that a snowball has a better chance in hell, then he does. You are always complaining that they don’t take him seriously, but how can you. He does not get the time because it would be a waste. If he had at least 5% of the vote then maybe, just maybe. lol The voters DO NOT LIKE HIS SO CALLED MESSAGE. The polls show this clearly. Everyone has listen to the nonsense that comes out his mouth, and they’re not buying it. So no its not “FOX” IT’S THE NATION! So all your crying foul prompts these kinds of messages. Its getting late in the game. If people haven’t heard him by now, they aren’t going to!
John McCain should point out that the economic quagmire that we are now facing is due in large part to an unregulated banking industry. Deregulation is being driven by money flowing from the industries affected into the hands of congress. Campaign finance reform is the only way to decouple economic power from political power. John McCain has been working for this for many years. Mitt Romney is opposed to it because he is yet another “what’s good for big business is good for America” Republican in the GW Bush mold. McCain might also want to point out that as the founder of Bain Capital, Mr. Romney is in an exclusive club of the most mercenary capitalists on earth. As someone who works with venture capitalists, I can attest that they have no regard for whether breaking up companies affects those who work there or the society at large. The economc issue should be a negative for Mitt Romney.
In the rigged elections of the former Soviet controlled European nations any candidates running for office that weren’t favoured by the Soviets were totally ignored by the news media there. They use the same tactic here in the US in regards to Dr. Paul.
The media knows that ingoring a candidate is a very powerful tool because people rely and sometimes trusts the news media to be informed about the major candidates. I wish the average American was aware of this but sadly most are not critical thinkers and totally ignorant of history. When they do give Paul attention it is pretty often to smear him or portray him as unelectable. The racism charges are a good example. I bet you haven’t heard though that the NAACP’s Dallas chapter president actually came to Ron Paul’s defence. Only someone clueless would wonder why most of the media decided not to report on this.
Mitt is a business man like Bush was before elected as prez. So what do you think will change? He has already said how he wants to continue the same Bush path. So what would be different? You people talk about the economy but don’t realize that the most important/powerful person/entity in the US economy is the Fed chairman/Federal Reserve not the executive branch. Mitt is clearly a two faced panderer like Bush was. So what would change again? Hillary will win. Conservatives start your crying. Haahaa
Huck thinks the sun revolves around the earth.
Mitt will sell his mother to the highest bidder.
McCain is insane. Still thinks Nam could’ve been won and it was a good war.
Rudy did nothing on 911. Please tell me what he did besides running from downtown like everyone else.
Paul tells the truth. America doesn’t like that.
Obama will never get elected at least not for another 100 years. American’s are closet racists.
Hillary will win. It has been chosen. She represents the Elite.
The election will be Hillary vs. McCain and Hillary will win.
US is an oligarchy and your all just sheep.
Romney did so well last night in the Republican Debate. He has finally arrived. I was shocked to hear McCain say he won the Republican vote in both NH and SC. The last I heard was that Romney won the Republican vote in NH, and that Huck won the Repbulican vote in SC. The NYT endorsing McCain will only hurt McCain among Republicans.
I am glad that Romney is spending some of his own wealth. What a perfect combination, he has raised more money than all other Republicans, and he has put his own money where is mouth is! I thought a great answer for spending his own money would have been that he is doing his own part to help the Florida economy.
Notice anything unusual here??
Total Talking Times
Romney: 21:11, during 13 times
McCain: 16:00, during 13 times
Giuliani: 13:50, during 11 times
Huckabee: 12:11, during nine times
Paul: 6:31, during six times
Ron Paul got the least amount of times to talk and the least amount of total talk time (almost 1/2 that of the next highest - Huckabee)
How come the media continues to ignore Dr. Paul and does not let him have any say?? Are they *THAT* scared of him??
Huccabee’s comment about being afraid of Norris was weak. It was a low blow at mccain (age issue) and it was deliberate. Same for his low blow at mitt’s religion. This is TRUE negative campaigning, as opposed to romney’s ads which stick to issue differences (not personal). Huccabee comes off to me as a real sneak.. letting others do his dirty work. I think Mitt is best for the country, most conservative and the one that will bring fresh ideas. Mccain did nothing for illegal imigration in his own state - since he really doesn’t see it as an issue. Now he flip flops because most people oppose it. He did nothing for 10 years.. NOTHING. Mccain was against the bush tax cuts, now he wants them permanent.. Huh??? He is the real flip flopper and too much of an insider to do anything.
Hey digitalbeachblum speak for yourself. Romney will win Florida. The man is genuine when he speaks, has real world experience. Unlike Mccain who has been on the Government dole his entire life. You know, the welfare that pays well. Boy do we need term limits. Some of these dinosaurs have got to go, they hold this country back.
I too take offense at the lack of mention of Ron Paul. He’s been outperforming Giuliani and yet gets decidedly less coverage. Where’s the love for Paul?!?
Speaking as a massachussetts resident, Mitt Romney is a political opportunist. He is most excellent as a manager and organizer in a crisis. However he leans too far to the right pandering to ancient ideals long ago proven to be draconian in nature.
His claim to solving the health insurance crisis ended up being a boon to the state’s tax coffers and mandating that people buy medical insurance. We like to think of him as Mitt the Twitt up here. That being said, I don’t think any candidate is even beginning to address the issues that face this country as a whole. I only see political maneuvering and pandering to the cameras for those kodak moments.
This country has serious problems and it will take serious people to address them.
I believe that McCain says and puts out the SAME stories every time I see him (ROCKY< his MOM, staright talk, my friends) It is getting oldddd. Mitt Romney was energetic, well spoken, knowlegeable. He WILL beat Shillary in November. A TRUE CONSERVATIVE
Thanks, Carl! Your report was a breath of air. 5th grade? Perhaps, but that is just refreshing. Must say that I had previously viewed you as rather stiff, but you are definitely with it and right on in my opinion. Mitt Romney is our man!
Romney won the debate, hands down. He is the man!
He is the only one with the experience, leadership, and morals we need to lead us.
Romney 2008!
It’s taken me some time, but the more I see Mitt and learn about him the more I feel like “duh!”, this is the right nominee for the GOP. Smart, disciplined, good-looking, successful in the private and government sectors, hardworking, organized, creative, open-minded, tough, conservative, compassionate, and has a real human touch. The only negatives are his relativly recent conversion to pro-life (and he really seems to have been more pro-life in the 80s, maybe he is returning to his roots…and is it so bad to see the light and change? I think that is in some ways powerful to the pro-life movement, to have a convert as the leader.), and his overly polished presentation. Last night that seemed to go away anyway as he was more relaxed. I really think Mitt would be a powerful leader for real conservative change. Go Mitt!
Good article Cameron. Short and precise statements are more factual and to the point. It helps prevent political spin, like Mr. O Riley of Fox News Factor always put’s it..’the spin stops here…”
Conservative republicans must come to accept Mitt as the stongest of all the candidates. Look at the man. He is smart. He is rich. He is good looking. He is a natural leader. Critics and and foe have attacked him as Phoney because they are jealous in that Romney had not gone through the tough experience of life like the Prinsoner of War hero McCain, or the 9-11 hero Gullian, or the “man that worked for and not the man that laid him off” religious Minister, Huckabee. Frankly, to the contrary, Romney’s success in life is a clear reflection and demonstration of his hard work, and get it done attitude. Listen to some of my favourite true conservative talk radio hosts, Limbaugh, Hannity, Ingra or Levin. They may not endorse any candidate, but more than often, there conservative views, meet Romney’s description 99.9% of the time than any of the other republican candidates. Romney is the only candidate that can beat any Democratic nominee. He can tear senator Clinton or senator Obama apart. Last point. The Dems are weak, superficial, and and have closets full of skeletons. So my friends, come stand with Mitt. He is the best choice for President at this time. Vote Mitt Romney.
Go Mitt…..
Mitt’s the Man! Go FIX washington, we ALL know it’s broke
Romney in 08 and beyond!
Romney clearly won the debate last night. This is Romneys moment to surge, and I suspect he will win Florida, and as a result pick up alot of important states on Super Tuesday. He took control of the debate last night and clearly showed the nation that he has what it takes to be the next President of the United States of America! His comments about Hillary and Bill in the White House again were priceless! GO ROMNEY!!!
i believe Mitt won the debate hands down last night. It’s getting annoying hearing the punditry say Mitt can’t win or that he will be the outsider when rudy, mike and fred give their support to Juan. Duh, just because they give their support to juanny doesn’t mean their supporters will.
Mitt knows business. Period. John can’t even remember what he said a month ago to the press about his lack of knowledge of economics.
Someone should ask him how many jobs he has created or how many people he has hired or what is involved in making a payroll.
I loved Mitt’s comeback on the two for one question - he reminded republicans why another clinton president would be bad.
So to recap:
You “eare” saying:
- Romney might win Florida…BUT McCain has a good chance too…AND so does Giuliani!!
Wow. Thanks for the insight! You eare an amazing reporter!
Romney is now the clear Front Runner. He is way ahead with delegates and total votes so far. McCain now has to go to states that do not let Dems and Independents vote. He cannot compete when it is only Republicans. Republicans do not trust him. Guiliani is done as he had a bad strategy and to much personal baggage. Huckabee is like the wierd uncle that you do not let around your children and never stood a chance. Ron Paul is a joke and does not even deserve an explanation.
Somethingsphishy
Poor Carl. You just can’t win. Before, everyone said you hated Romney. Now they’re complaining that you love him. They are even complaining about your grammer and pithy comments! That’s alright. We understand. It was 3:00 am when you did your post. Keep up the good work. Our family has always enjoyed your reporting!
Romney has all the momentum, delegates and votes
McCain is really a Democrat
Guiliani screwed up and is toast
Huckabee is like the weird uncle you try and hide and is scary
Ron Paul is a joke
Somethingsphishy
Mr. Cameron, I see nothing wrong with your writing style. It is to the point. I suspect there are many readers that appreciate plainess in a world where some people like complicating a message with frivolous verbage. I have taught school for 21 years and am not offended by simple, plain writing - it is refreshing and clear.
Not one candidate is perfect. I am greatly impressed by Ron Paul’s honesty and message and think the world is a much better place for having his influence.
I will, however, vote for Romney. I believe he has the ability to work within a confused system of government, and we need him.
Bob Langston
I agree with the majority of people here. Mitt has come from nowhere and is making great inroads. He has a strong platform, has great experience, and is a turnaround master. He can communicate well and is very intelligent. For all of these reasons and more, he has won three states and taken second in two. He leads in the total number of vote and in the delegate count. Who knows what will happen in the future, but I believe he has at least as good (if not better) chance of winning the nomination than anyone. What about his chances against Hillary or Obama? As America gets to know him, they will side with the true leader.
Good analysis, Carl.
Romney’s actually managed something - in business and government. McCain’s been little more than a professional politician and angry blow-hard. (Being a member of the Senate, which is nothing but a debating society, is hardly “experience.”) It looks like Florida’s Republicans are on track to elect the right candidate.
Go Mitt!!!!!!!
Did everyone else hear Romney getting fed answers?
http://www.justin.tv/ronpaultv/62347/Strange_Whisper__Romney_Raise_Taxes
The guy cant even think for himself let alone run against Hillary. The bottom line is NONE of the so called front runners stand a chance against Hillary or Obama. 7 in 10 Americans are sick of the War and are terrified about economic issues. McCain is simply lifetime Washington DC politics at its worst. Who really wants 4 more years of a failed GW policy?
Huckabee stands for everything true conservatism isnt. Taxes, more govt programs, more taxes, welfare programs, more taxes, bigger federal involvement and more taxes. Not to mention he is broke! Chuck Norris tried to raise millions for him at a high priced fundraiser event and only pulled in $300k. Real people, real voters, real working class people pooled together another $2M for Ron Paul in one day!
Guiliani clearly isnt ready for the national stage and he will be the next to drop out. I am sure he will be quick to endorse his long time friend and pal McCain too.
The ONLY candidate that truly has any shot against the dems is Ron Paul. Did you notice that all the candidates kept saying, “I slashed taxes, I’m for change, I can cut spending, blah blah blah” Ron Paul simply stated the truth and stuck to the facts. His record is flawless. Cant say the same for the rest of them. Romney thinks he has more donations than Paul too? Ha, check the records dude. RP has outraised everyone on the past 2 quarters, and has more liquid cash on hand than anyone.
Then when they asked how are they going to fix the economy, SS, education, etc its always more federal involvement, more federal funding, etc. WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO GET THIS MONEY FROM??? There is NO MONEY folks. The Dems and Repubs have squandered it all overseas and have ruined the US Dollar. Ron Paul is THE ONLY one who has the plan to save us trillions, stop borrowing money from China, truly fix our economy, and END taxes not replace them with some other tax.
Vote the issues, Vote for TRUE Change, vote Ron Paul this election!
[...] Report for Romney Posted on January 25, 2008 by cindyforbes Mitt’s Moment <!– Share –> by Carl Cameron Polls show Mitt Romney could win the Florida [...]
Vote Mitt. Great job Cameron. Short, simple and to the point statements helps prevent political spin.
A few weeks ago, I was teaching young girls about the importance of making choices based on facts and not on what others may say. If you want facts you need to get out there and do the research yourself! The suggestion that Mitt Romney saved the Olympics because of the government bailout is CRAZY! I don’t know of anyone our current government has “saved” by just throwing money at the problem. You want an example? Take the Welfare system in the U.S.
Every good leader knows that first you must have a Vision and a Plan, then you have to back it up with Hard Work!!
Check this out! You will find Mitt Romney fits that very pattern!
By the way, even fifth graders could figure out the “meat” of the message.
First off, im just going to state right now that I did not even waste my time by reading this article. I’ve read enough articles just like this one to know that it has no real substantial truth behind it. I did however skim this article for a mention of Ron Paul and then read most of the comments. I literally loled at most of them. I find it quite amusing that people really buy into the media coverage of this election and believe it to be true. Mitt Romney seems like some type of test tube baby cooked up by the government with all the components of being a “great president”, little bit of JFK little bit of Reagan, little bit of Bush…its ridiculous.
I would now like to call Tim out who left a comment saying that Ron Paul is not a serious candidate. I can see where you would get that. I mean it’s not like he’s not the top internet searched candidate and he definitely didn’t raise over 6 million in one day leaving him with more on hand cash than most of the other candidates(that isn’t from out of his pocket like Mr. Romney.) So I guess your right he doesn’t really stand a chance does he?
If Ron Paul does not win this election, we will continue to fall as a country. We will be more in debt than we already are, the economy will completely crash and the reign of the U.S as the super power will be over.
If you genuinely care about the well being of this country, as being one for democracy and the basic constitutional rights that we deserve as being American citizens than make the right decision and vote for Ron Paul.
Did you hear the whisper to Romney about taxes during the Reagan question? Here’s the link to youtube. It’s very distinct. Are there rules about being “fed” answers? Please check it out.

OK, let me get this straight. Evangelicals are dead set against Mitt? They would never vote for him? So in a straight up contest next November between Mitt and a woman who is pro-abortion and known for lying, hiding records, forgetting facts (although she’s supposedly genius-level), and for being married to a guy who is even better at all those things, the aforementioned evangelicals would rather vote Democrat than Republican? Or they would rather stay home and not vote, which is the same thing as voting Democrat? Remember: The only thing necessary for triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Has everyone forgotten Vince Fowler and his ties to Hillary? By the way, I prefer Congressman Ron Paul over Governor Mitt Romney. It’s time America, please, to get the Clintons off the public dole. Please don’t elect Billary.
One of the things that is being overlooked is that while the hard core conservatives love Romney he will not win in the general election. The reason why is very simple. The ultra-conservatives and ultra-liberals will eventually vote for their respective candidates whether they really like them or not primarily because they simply can’t bear to see the other side take control. In other words a moderate like McCain is a lot better than an ultra-liberal like Hillary or Obama (the same could be said in reverse for democrats of course). The problem is that these two voting blocks usually cancel each other out and it’s left to the Independants and moderates on either side to swing the election one way or the other. Right now, Republican is a dirty word among these voters because the ultra-conservative Bush policies are perceived (and truth is often less important than perception) as disasterous. Moderates and Independants will not vote for a hard core conservative right now because given the choice between and extreme liberal and an extreme conservative the state of the nation right now and the perception of the Republican party by those voters will hand the election to the democrats.
I am one of those moderates and while I mostly agree with the Republicans I have no shame in voting democrat when I find them to be a superior choice at the time. My position is that Romney will NEVER receive my vote for the very reason that he is the same type of “say anything to win” used car salesman that Hillary is and he’s extreme. Additionally, I recognize that both the democrats and Republicans are so entrenched in this “win at all costs and never surrender to the enemy on the other side of the aisle” attitude that nothing ever gets done. Both the democrats and republicans have great ideas that could benefit this country but neither side can do anything to get them implimented because one side goes against it for the sole reason that it was the idea of the other side. It’s like a bunch of children. I believe we need someone with a history of being able to put aside the partisanship and work with either side. The only candidate I see with the track record to do that is McCain. I don’t believe Hillary can do it, Obama MIGHT but I doubt it, and I doubt Romney can as well as he is simply too extreme and he will solidify the “us vs. them” mentality.
I do not always agree with McCain (immigration is a perfect example - although I understand why he did it) but I respect him and I trust that what he does is done because he believes it is the right thing to do. I can’t say that about anyone else. His statement last night that he will put the interests of America above the interests of his party resonated with me as I am sure it did with many Independants and moderates. Romney had a good night in his demeanor and his delivery but I saw another Bush and the nation won’t go for that. If you think they will ask yourself who controls Congress now and why.
Great summary of where the campaign is. I sense momentum with Mitt - especially after the debate last night. Mitt wins on economy and judges.
GO MITT!!!!!! We need a proven business minded individual to put this country where it needs to be. We also need to maintain strong moral, family-minded leadership. GO MITT!!!!!
I like Mitt Romney. I respect his Religious faith very much . I have known great men who held offices in Mitts Mormon Religion. I believe Mitt is a honest Man and a righteous one at that. I think Mr. Romney will make a great president because of his integrity and honest heart. If God has a interest in saving America from the enemies within and without and I believe he does, Perhaps Mitt Romney’s Bid for the highest office in this land will be aided by the Almighty hand of God. If this sounds a bit off the deep end for some of you I do not wish to apologize. Ben Franklin rightly quoted the scriptures instructing us That if a sparrow can not fall to the earth without him (God) noticing it, can a Nation rise without his Aid ? I believe the continued success of this country as a free Nation and the leader of the free world is in the hands of God which he delegates to his honest followers. One of which Mitt Romney is.
I’m really curious, why Ron Paul isn’t doing well among the “fiscally conservative” Republican Party? Is it because there hasn’t really been a fiscally conservative Republican since Dwight D. Eisenhower? Are Republicans really fiscally conservative, or just for tax breaks? Look at the record since Ike. I consider myself fiscally conservative and socially liberal - and that means that we should have a right to own guns, run our business’ how we want without government interference, and NOT spend ourselves into oblivion. (Our dollar is becoming worthless.) I hope Ron runs as an independent if he can’t get the honest attention of the conservative Media. (MSNBC, CNN, FOX, etc.)
After Thompson’s departure, I’m stuck with Romney. But I must say, Cameron’s been in the tank for Romney from the start. He dismissed Fred before he even entered because he wore the wrong shoes to the Iowa state fair back in the summer.
I used to like “Campaign Carl.” Now I seriosly can’t stand him. Not because I disagreed with him, but because he thinks he’s Dick Morris now, who I also can’t stand.
Anyway, go Romney.
It is without doubt that Mitt Romney should be the front runner in the next general election. His consistant banter, sharp edged strategy and wit seems to have finally caught on. His explanation of what the country needs is right on target. His audience certainly should listen to his sage advice. I am fast starting to think Mitt is the one to pull us out of our economic ditch. John McCain does not nearly measure up to the intelligence of Mitt Romney. Most anyone should be able to see this!!!
Did anyone here the whispering going on during the debate while Mitt was being asked questions about Reagan. Someone whispered “Taxes” to him as if to tell him what to say. So in essence, Mitt didn’t really debate, he was led much like the other candidates. Guiani? NO MONEY. MCCAIN, NO MONEY. But it’s no surprise that the only candidate who upholds real republican values gets no play and that’s Dr. Paul. You are all a bunch of liberal sell outs
This article is just like any other: the guy doesn’t know jack. Down the candidate, then praise him; say “he has no chance at all”, then say “don’t count him out”.
Just youtube the video of Romney getting his answers from someone. If you really think he has it together watch that and see for yourself. it’s right there in front of your very own eyes. or you can live the american DREAM and stay asleep
