McCain = Dole? says Romney: Pataki Says NOT!

UPDATE:

The McCain campaign put out a response to Romney’s comments saying:

“Gov Romney’s attack on Bob Dole is disgraceful, and Governor Romney should apologize. Bob Dole is a war hero who has spent his life in service to this nation and nobody has worked harder to build the Republican Party. Bob Dole deserves the respect of every American and certainly every Republican.”

McCain was in the clear lead already in New York, but it never hurts to get one more endorsement and he got it this morning from the Former governor of New York, George Pataki.

McCain 55.2%, Romney 23.8%, Huckabee 7.6% Paul 4.%

Click here to see what the Governor had to say:

But as McCain was receiving the Gov’s endorsement, Mitt was on Fox and Friends comparing McCain’s bid for the White House to Bob Dole’s unsuccessful candidacy against Bill Clinton in 1996. The former Senator Dole yesterday sent a letter to Rush Limbaugh telling him to quit his attacks on McCain. He wrote:

“Whoever wins the Republican nomination will need your enthusiastic support. Two terms for the Clintons are enough.”

Mitt seized the opportunity to respond to the letter. He said this morning on “Fox & Friends” that there were similarities between Dole, the oldest candidate to run prior to John McCain.

“Well, it’s probably the last person I would have wanted write a letter for me,” Romney said. “I think there are a lot of folks who tend to think that maybe John McCain’s race is a bit like Bob Dole’s race. That it’s the guy who’s next in line, the inevitable choice.”

I find it so ironic that bob Dole would ask us to rally around John McCain. The last time I had to hold my nose and vote for a candidate it was for Bob Dole!!!

Comment by KW Houston TX

McCain seems to think if you are a war hero you can get away with anything. His own record proves it. No matter what underhanded tactic he uses. No matter how much he screams on the senate floor. No matter what his policies are, he just smiles and says, “Well my friends, I’m a war hero.

McCain is just another Richard Nixon.
Go Romney!

Comment by chevos

McCain wants Romney to apologize? We’re all still waiting for McCain to apologize for his incredible lies about Romney!!!

Comment by Chris George

Romney is right. McCain is angy and thin skinned like Bob Dole. I love Bob Dole, but nominating him was a mistake. It was such a stark contract between the past and the future. It will be the same contrast if we nominate McCain. Also, McCain will be an easy kill as a war monger, whose mind set will drag us into conflict after conflict because John McCain can’t stomach an opinion different than his own. Is that the quality that will help us maintain and strengthen an international coalition against the Islamists? I don’t think so. McCain is still fighting the Vietnam war. He cannot see beyond that paradigm.

Comment by Matt

I’ve been equating McCain’s possible candidacy to Dole’s 1996 run for several months. This is not a disrespect to Dole unless you think McGrumpy is a horrible candidate. The comparison is because both were old running against a more dynamic candidate.

Comment by Josh

McCain’s campaign proves time and time again that they really don’t have a clue on what is and isn’t an attack. McCain and Huckabee continue to run Romney through the mud for having a change of heart on abortion (isn’t that what we pro-lifers want?) - which isn’t so much the problem - on top of that they like to make up ludicrous accusations against Romney and say they run a “positive” campaign. How anyone can vote for these people is beyond the realm of reason! We need to vote someone in office that truly understands conservative principals, not a Repub. who has been so tainted by a decade - in Huckabee’s case, more than two decades - in McCain’s case, of politics that they’ve wrongly convinced themselves that they understand conservative principals, when their records are atrocious and their ideas for the future are moderate to liberal (with social conservatism mixed in).

This is a last minute message to friends and family concerning the republican primaries. As true believers we must listen to God and vote the way He would vote. For example, I believe and God believes that life begins at conception, see Psalms 139. Therefor, we should not say one thing then do another. The facts is both Romney and McCain believe in embrionic stem cell research, these are ferttlized eggs! I now have a peace, that if I vote as God wants me to, then it doesn’t matter who ends up being president, my family and I will stay under God’s blessing because of obedience. Mike Huckabee is not perfect, but he is the only candidate that has been true and unwavering on prolife, marriage, and family issues. He has supported Bush on the surge in Iraq and believes that we must remain such a strong force that no one will ever want to challenge us. I again am at peace for me and my family, but I am burdened for the many deceived Christians across America. Because many will negate their beleif system today. God will not wink at this any longer. If we vote for those who believe in the destruction of life, then we will reap destruction of life. I beg you to forward this email to every person you can. This is a very serious issue.
Before you vote today, or whenever your primary is, please pray first, listen then to what the Holy Spirit tells you.
Rodney
*Again, please forward this message!

This was not an attack on Bob Dole!!! McCain is once again distorting things! Romney did not say anything about Dole’s character, about his history, about his integrity as a human being. He was simply talking about his failed attempt at becoming President, and compared his candidacy to John McCain’s. GIVE ME A BREAK!!

MCCAIN, YOU ARE SO BLASTED LUCKY THAT EVERYONE IS BEING NICE TO YOU AND NOT BRINGING UP SOME OF YOUR PAST SCANDALS!!! YOU CAN BE SURE THAT THE DEMOCRATS WON’T BE SO NICE SHOULD YOU GET THE NOMINATION!

More and More people are thinking Obama is going to win the nomination. Just picture Obama and McCain debating each other! Ha, Ha!!! It would be quite embarrasing for Republicans!!!

That’s why we’re not going to let that happen!!! We’re going to nominate a candidate who has knowledge, experience, leadership ability, a great personal history, great family, great values, and Presidential qualities!!

REPUBLICANS ARE RALLYING TO ROMNEY!!! ALL THE WAY TO THE WHITE HOUSE!!!

MITT ROMNEY FOR PRESIDENT!!!

I think Carl is for McCain.

McCain is grasping at straws. If you watched the Mitt interview in its entirety, it’s not as bad as McCain is making it out to be.

Comment by Ed

This is shamefull. Mitt Romney, You are a self serving JERK!

Comment by Ci2Eye

McCain is shameless. Whatever respect I may have had for him as a ‘war hero’ have been used up by how dishonest and sleezy he has been recently on the campaign trail.

To say that one wouldn’t think an endorsement from the guy who lost big in 1996 is very valuable is not an attack on a war hero. No matter how McCain tries to spin it, people are smart enough to know the difference.

I am sick of McCain and his smug attitude. If he wins, this Republican will vote Democrat for the first time ever.

Comment by Robert

This is one of those ‘leaps of logic’ that makes sense when you dont’ really think about it, but anything more than a cursory glance, and you realize its completely wrong.

Bob Dole’s competition in that race, was Publisher Steve Forbes, and columnist Pat Buchannan.

It wasn’t simply ‘his turn.’… Forbes and Buchannan simply lacked any type of experience, either as governor, or congressman or Senator, or vice president…or running a successful campaign….you name it, they lacked it.

Now we are going to go back and say well, you know it was Dole’s turn…and do we really want to just give old people their turn.

What a load. See, you know very well that Romney is a wonk, he isn’t 12 years old, he remembers Bob Dole’s campaign.

But he see’s things whatever way, the short memoried public might remember them…not because he is personally an idiot, but because he lacks honesty and will use any advantage to get elected.

Say what you want about McCain, the fact is, McCain has proven over the years that he will take a dive in the polls, and tell you straight what he believes is right. Thats a difference between him and Romney.

Comment by Ron

Why is it that one cannot make an observation with someone getting offended and demanding an apology? Short of personal attacks and slander, if someone makes an observation it seems to me it is fair game. This is politics, its supposed to be tough. I would agree with Romney on a couple of points - Bob Dole’s endorsement ( much like Walter Mondale, Al Gore, John Kerry, and anyone else who has lost) doesn’t carry much weight. Which is not to say anything derrogatory about Dole, he was a war veteran, and a distinguished senator and served his country well, but he was not presidential material.

Second, you can’t expect to change Washington if you keep sending the same people back over and over again. I believe that is one reason you haven’t seen a member of congress elected preseident in a long time. If these people had actually affected change (Hillary, Obama, McCain) it might be a different story. They keep going back and things stay the same.

Comment by tominAZ

McCaine is doing worse than Romney. Mc is using Bob Dole in a manner that is far worse than any comment by Romney, Mc is still a lier and a lib. I won’t vote for Mc or any of the Dem’s. Take the hit like the Jimmy Carter mess and GOP come back in and fix it. Maybe that is just the cycle of the Presidency.

Comment by Jan

I am really tired of McCain’s response to literally everything being “He’s a war hero.” When McCain doesn’t want to answer a question, he goes back to Viet Nam and talks about being a war hero. We can thank him for serving our country as we should all vets, but we do not owe him the presidency for being a POW. We know he got better treatment because his dad and grandfather were Admirals, in fact, he came home weighing more than went he became a POW, so it appears he was fed better than other POW’s because of daddy.

But all that was 30 years ago. Let us count the ways he’s done something for us lately: 1. McCain-Feingold, 2. McCain-Kennedy, 3. McCain-Lieberman…….need I say more?

And the favoristims continues: He wasn’t punished for his role in Keating 5, his wife got away with stealing drugs from the non-profit without being charged with a crime.

It’s time to end McCain’s abuse of our country and save the Republican party from demolition. Let’s vote Romney.

Comment by Mark

Not suprising that the McCain surrogate Cameron delivers the McCain “response” to the Dole “attack”. You call this news? This is the McCain camp making another attempt at complete dishonesty. Read Romney’s comment…..hardly inflamatory. He is just calling it how everyone sees it. There is no level too low for these McCain people to stoop to. Get ready for your reward in November…….AN ENORMOUS LOSS. McCain’s giant ego will get brought down to size. It is unbeliveable that with all the media’s help and the govenors support, McCain is going to lose California. Not a good sign “My Friend”.

Comment by Sharon

Get the whole story people. Mclame whines about everything and anything when he does not get what he wants. Do you really want a Commander who bully’s until he gets he’s way. What a why baby. If he wins I will be ashamed to call myself a Repubican.

Comment by Joseph

Romney has no respect for anyone but himself. By the way, I believe that was an A-B conversation between Dole and Rush that Romney needed to C his way out of.

Comment by Carla in Mississippi

I am SO SICK of hearing about McCain being a war hero…He is NOT the ONLY ONE! He’s just the only one who is waving a flag about it - vote for me, I got captured. It’s disgusting.

Romney is the TRUE conservative in this race. MCCAIN IS NOT CONSERVATIVE.

He is weak on immigration - supports front of the line privileges for illegals.
He is not really pro-life.
He supports embryonic stem cell research when there are other options that support life.

He is a Repub. until it’s best for him to act like or become a Dem.
family values? Forget it. Dumps a sick wife for a newer model. What happened to sickness or in health?

THE LIST GOES ON…MCCAIN IS A FAKE.

ROMNEY SUPPORTS A CONSTITUTIONAL MARRIAGE AMENDMNT
ROMNEY OPPOSES DESTRUCTIVE STEM CELL RESEARCH.
ROMNEY IS STRONG ON IMMIGRATION - OPPOSES SPECIAL RIGHTS FOR ILLEGALS.
ROMNEY IS A DEVOTED FAMILY MAN - NOT A FAIR-WEATHER HUSBAND/FATHER.
ROMNEY KNOWS HOW TO BUILD A COALITION OF EXPERTS TO COVER ANY ISSUE.
AND THIS LIST GOES ON…….ROMNEY IS THE TRUE CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICATION.

Where’s the “update” about Mitt Romney apologizing and trying to call Bob Dole to apologize for his comments. Which were not meant to be a personal jab, but were simply about Dole’s failed campaign against Bill Clinton!

Comment by Bob R. Baker

Carl, while listening to Rush read the letter from Sen. Dole today, I did not get the impression nor did I hear that Dole was telling Rush to back off. In fact part of the Dole letter was not very flattering to McCain. Perhaps we should read the entire letter before reaching any conclusions about the content. As far as supporting McCain, should he get the nomination, as a 73 year old, life long Republican, I would have a hard time voting for him. My reasons are simple. I sincerely believe based on recent history that McCain’s philosophy is nearer to the Kennedy-Feingold wing of the Democrat party than to any part of the Republican philosophy.

Comment by joe tria

Pataki backs McCain should come as no surprise. I can’t believe that anyone would think that McCain will beat Hillary. NOT going to happen. The Republican should wake up as this is probably their last hurrah. If they lose this one, they are done. But, in reality, the way that have acted, these senators and congressmen, in the past eight years only serves as justification to get them out of office. Romney is their only hope. They just don’t know it because the press wants McCain in so the Democrats can pound him into the ground. The press will do to McCain what Kennedy did to Hillary Clinton.

Comment by Brett

Romney could have been a little more clear with his point. He was not attacking Doles on a personal level or his character or his service to the country and repubican party. He was simply comparing similarities between the Dole and McCain presidential bids. Both were long time, older politicians that waited a long time and built name recognition leading to their presidential bid. Of course Dole lost in the general election and Romney believes the same will happen to McCain if he gets the nomination.
Once again the McCain campaign twists Romneys words making it appear Romney was attacking Dole on a personal level and only a dirty rat would ever consider that.

Comment by Apollo

Bob Dole is a war hero, but if McCain is our nominee, it will be just the same, old guy, old news, long-term senator who IS Washington DC. Don’t just vote for someone because it is “their turn” … that gave us the nominee Bob Dole, who is a great guy, I voted for him, I campaigned for him, I donated to him, but he could not win against a young, hip guy (corrupt, yes, but on TV Bill looked better than Bob)

McCain v. Obama would be the same thing. Old guy versus Young guy.

Young, hip, happy, optimistic will win.

Mitt Romney is needed to fix the economy!

Mitt Romney is presidential.

Comment by gayle

What a joke! Mitt Romney is NOT a conservative…just look at his record in Massachussetts. He invoked Mandatory healthcare and people are saying that it is cheaper to pay the penalties for NOT having health care than to buy health care they need! He has changed his position on key issues numerous times and I would rather have McCain who thinks for himself and plays it straight than pick Romney who panders to every special group he can find to get their votes. I don’t trust Romeny and if the two major conservative newspapers in his home state are endorsing McCain rather than Romney, that ought to tell you something! As for all of these conservative radio talk show hosts, its too bad that they want to cause such a break in the Republican party at this stage in the game…if they don’t stop the hatred, the Republicans will never keep the White House. People are sick of the attacks and sick of the fake politicians. I am a California voter and I voted for McCain!

Comment by Karen

Mitt Romney never attacked Bob Dole. He later said he thinks very highly of Bob Dole. Bob Dole did not run a good campaign and it happens to be very like McCain’s who will lose to the Democrats if elected. That’s all Romney was saying. For John McCain to suggest that Romney attacked an “american hero” is another dirty tactic by McCain. He’s showing his true colors.

Comment by dr.marko

McCain again is misrepresenting the facts.

McCain Voters start looking at the facts not the hype:

1. McCain supports gay marriage, and was involved in the McCain Savings and Loan scandal that cost taxpayers HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.
Check the facts - here is the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keating_Five

2. If he can’t secure our borders here in Arizona - how in the world is he going to protect our country?

I am voting for Mitt Romney!

Comment by bbb

a mccain victory would create an historic oportunity for a 3rd CONSERATIVE PARTY

to split the vote with the two very liberal nominees

Comment by Rebecca

Romney’s “campaign” has only consisted of McCain bashing since the last debate. If he really needs to focus on such negative attacks, it only proves that he doesn’t have his own credentials to run on. However when FoxNews decides to jump in on the McCain bashing, and tries to unjustly sway conservatives away from him on a daily basis, what are misinformed voters who believe Fox supposed to think? When people don’t look at the real issues and only stress some frivilous social concerns - not real political conservativism - the imprtant republican issues are going to end up a lost cause. McCain is the only candidate who can take on either of the democratic nominees in Nov and all republicans need to start thinking about that if they want this party in the white house. If they buy into all this McCain bashing by Romney and Fox and pick someone who is unqualified to be president, then the democrats with most likely secure the executive and legistlative branches of the government and they will probably deserve to.

I tend to be a News junkie … I also take my politics seriously … I am Replublican through and through …. With that said I am totally finished with the back and forth going on at the present. I think I am not alone with the fact that I have grown weary with the High School Drama going on between the candidates.

Mitt Romney is a devout, practicing MORMON! Think you know what the MORMONs are all about? I doubt it! To find out for yourself just how dangerous this cult is, view the following link:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4816055229487356909

For those of you who say “religion doesn’t matter”, consider whether or not you would feel that way if a candidate were a practicing Satanist.

It matters. It all matters.

Think about it. Mitt Romney believes that a white salamander led Joseph Smith to some buried “gold plates” (that only HE could read with the help of some “magical spectacles”) upon which were inscribed (in a “secret special language”) the book of Mormon, (which consequently has undergone dozens of “revisions”). Do we really want the leader of the free world to be this gulliable?

If Mr. Romney does not believe this garbage, then he is guilty of living a lie solely for the purpose of using the Mormon’s excellent networking prowess and very deep pockets for political gain.

Either way, Mitt Romney, like the Mormon Church, is not what he appears to be!

Vote Mike Huckabee if you want a real Christian in the White House!

Comment by Janit Jones

I read the Bob Dole letter and nowhere did I see Senator Dole asking Rush Limbaugh to “quit his attacks on McCain”. Get the facts straight.

Comment by Darlene Wagner

Fox News won’t give it up. Still trying to make Mitt Romney to looke bad.

Comment by Jimmy

Sen. Dole is entitled to his opinion. I believe he is wrong.

John McCain will not make a good leader for the US or the
world at large. He is “small minded” without vision for anyone
or anything beyond himself. He has shown his willingness
to collaborate with the Dems in the Senate, so what is the
difference between Sen. McCain and the Clintons or Obama?
I can’t see it.

Hold onto your wallets folks. Looks to me like no matter who
wins, your taxes are going up, the price of gas will triple,
(after we abandon Iraq to Iran), anyone wanting US citizenship
will cross the border illegally, the Supreme Court candidates
will be ACLU approved, no one will fix real problems or give
one “whit” about the average citizen.

Anyone who believes all the promises made by, McCain,
Clinton or Obama, just doesn’t get it. I have listened to the
same “talk” all my life (60+yrs) its just a lotta BS.

Looks like we are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.

Comment by Kim in St. Louis

This is so incredibly childish. Both McCain and Romney have been sinking down to the level of the Democrats. I voted for Huckabee because he has stood the higher ground as these two duke it out. If Huckabee becomes the candidate, I believe he will remain civil during the rest of the campaigning process just as he as done so far. A little bit of civility and decency is what we need to bring this country back together. We can find that in Mike Huckabee.

Comment by Dennis Carney

Sounds like the spin masters have really out did theirselves on this one …. I don’t hear the slam against Dole ….. Do you ???

Comment by CaliforniaDreamer

What a great time to be an American… I’ve never been more sure of the right choice for our country at this time. My vote will go for Mitt Romney. There’s no getting around the fact that this country has some challenging times ahead of us and this is the one candidate (in any party) that has the integrity, conviction, experience, and tolerance to lead us through the challenging times ahead.

Whatever the outcome - I hope to see the largest turnout in our history during these primaries and the upcoming general election. And God Bless this country and the man (or woman) who this incredible responsibility is bestowed upon.

Get out and Vote…

Comment by Sharon

McCain’s antics only show the true nature of his candidacy. Huckabee could not have won the WVA primary without the back-door deal. The usual dirty mess from the Republicans!

Comment by The Anti-McCain Movement

Don’t underestimate how angry and disgusted many Republicans are with McCain. I’ve already talked with over forty republicans, today, who will not support McCain if he wins the nomination. I’ve heard responses from, “I’ll write in a candidate,” to “I won’t vote at all for President.” And yes, I’ve heard SEVERAL say “Hillary will get my vote before McCain will - at least you know what you get with her.” It’s not a conservative or far right problem. It is an honesty, integrity and character problem with McCain. Mavericks may inspire legends but they never inspire trust because they don’t use ethical means to get things done - they are mercenary. That’s the problem with McCain - anything to win. (West Virginia is a small example.) Many Republicans simply don’t want to put another back-room dealing, nasty-tempered crooked-talker in the White House. Been there. Done that. The anti-McCain vote simply doesn’t want to make the “Crooked Talker” our President. We’d rather see a Democrat in there than an egotistical, cut-throat, backstabbing politician that we have to be responsible for. Some disenchanted voters may justify it and say, “He is, at least, a Republican, the lesser of two evils.” But he is still evil (as in NOT good for the country.) That’s what the anti-McCain vote is all about - we simply won’t give him our vote.

Comment by Ken

Isn’t this the same Mitt who told others to quit their whining? What a putz! Whenever he loses, he discredits the voice of the voters and cries like a baby. He doesn’t possess the fortitude to run for president, and he just flips his position far too often.

McCain has stooped to a new low by accusing Romney of attacking Dole as a person; he was clearly commenting about Dole’s lack of campaign skills concerning presidential elections and politics. If McCain wins the Primary, he will lose in November, much the same way Dole did, with Hillary or Barack delivering a crushing defeat that will leave McCain even more bitter and enraged than he always appears now.
