McCain and Hillary in Same Battle: To Best Obama!

The latest polls tell it all. McCain wants, and for now NEEDS his opponent to be Hillary. The latest Zogby poll shows McCain handily beating Hillary outside the margin of error, while if he goes up against Obama, McCain LOSES.
McCain has begun trying to define both dems - with particular emphasis last night on Obama. There is more time for the general election race than EVER before, so no campaign is in any hurry to start the serious attacking too soon.
The truth is some in the McCain camp are particularly comfortable with Obama riding higher and higher - the McCainiac argument is that the bigger Obama gets, the bigger the target and the harder the fall, in the fall.

The polls were wrong again yesterday. Big Time.
I for one don’t pay any attention to them but I suppose they have to be done to try to sway an election and give the pollsters a job and something for the reporters to talk about.

McCain will not beat either Hillary or Obama but he is our presumptive nominee so deal with it folks. He has no economic or legistative experience. Folks did you notice the economy is tanking “It’s the economy stupid”. The only canidate who could have beaten the Dems on the economy was Mitt Romney and everyone put the flip-flop label on him even though he changed his position ot pro-life based on a personal experience.

As far as Huckabee goes I believe the olny reason he is staying in the race is to end up with more votes than Mitt Romeny, which I think is pretty selfish. After he is a Southern Baptist and they don’t like the LDS church (I live in MS trust me I see it). How embarrasing would it be for a Southern Baptist to finish behind a LDS church member after wearing your faith like a banner all campaign season. If Huckabee had dropped out after all his consecutive losses (post IA) and let McCain and Romeny go head to head on Super Tuesday we would be looking at a Romeny presidental ticket right now and the conservative base of the party would be energized.

Instead the party has turned its back on the conservative base and said essentialy to suck it up and vote for McCain. As a result we are going to get stomped in the general election and lose more senate seats too. The Dems will have a super majority in the sentate to override any veto or fillibuster and their will be no stopping them.

Once the Republican party puts its religous bigotry behind it and unites as Chrisitans we will be able to do great things. I fear it is too late this year and we will have to wait until 2012. At least Mitt was able to get the LDS church some visability and let people see it truly is a Christian church with Jesus as our saviour. Hopefully we can put religious bigotry behind us and vote for the best canidate next time and not worry about what Christian church they attend.

I just wish we had another choice. I see Clinton as a Socialism, Obama as a Libertian and McCain more as a Moderate Democrate. There is no true Republican or Democrate candiate. It boils down to how much you want the government to take care of you and be in your business. The more government spends to provide for you what you should provide for your self will raise the Nation debt. I guess the bright side of it is they will tel you what health care you will have, what is the best way to raise your children, how to eat, and how to spend your money, what you can watch on tv, and want you can read. Be happy! you won’t have a care in the world. Welcome to the Zombie nation.

The poll is likely quite valid if the election were being held today, or even this week. But I’m sure the results were quite different 2 to 3 weeks ago. There’s considerable time between now and November, and therefore, the numbers can only be used to start analyzing trends in the data. Today, these numbers don’t mean a whole lot.

Comment by hsmith

Since McCain doesn’t have the nomination yet, could we get a poll with Huckabee pitted against each of the Democratic nominees?

what trash thinking e that a person who does not like the american flag the national anthem and wants to be elected president. that sounds like hiring a wolf to babysit the chickens. something is pretty crazy here. a black american being elected is something a lot of people would be proud of BUT of an un american maybe dangerous person pretending to be a good old black christian. as much as i do not want a clinton president i hope she askes him WHO HE IS AND WHY IS HE HERE?

I’m from Florida and Voted for Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton. Never in my life have I been as disappointed in the Democratic party and the press then since this election started. The favortism in the press towards Obama is unbelievable.

I’m a registered Democrat and typically vote that way, but after being discounted from the Democratic party, if the nomination goes to Obama, my vote will go to McClain.

Comment by trish

I would think that would be true only because you can’t fight fair against a black man–it would be racist. Although I believe Obama won’t win the general IF he gets that far.

Zogby — that’s the guy that had Obama to win by 15%, and Romney up 7% in CA on the day of their primary, isn’t it?? Yea, his numbers are something to bet on.

Well here we go again,another obvious attempt,by fox news to ignore Huckabee,who would do better against either Obama or Mrs Clinton(Bill’s sometimes wife)
I listened in for the first time in a month,to,Oreilly,as he interviewd Gingrich,last night,to hear him blast the NYT for their attack on McCain,and actually say that He is disgusted with modern day Jounalism
Well Mister O’Reilly,should have gathered his counterparts,Hannity Limbaugh Coulter and Ingrahm,in fornt of a large mirror,as He made his remark….Between them, they then would have,I’m sure,been able to come up with something,in the way of justification,to speak away the way they have smeared Mike Huckabee……Don’t give us that Journalism baloney,O’Reilly until your able to step up to the plate,with a different uniform,than The NYT…..You peope are no better than the Times,and should shut up,until you’re willing to suck it up and apologize to Mike and make right, the ignoring of Him,because He did’nt have the money to spend at Fox for advertising,that the loser you picked did. You’ve lost viewers,over the same Kind of coverage you accuse the NYT of…I’m a conservative,of almost 70 yrs of age,and not so stupid,as to accept a phoney remark from a man in the process of eating crow,because the American people have spoken to your Bias in favor of the man with the fat wallet….He’s no longer in the race…….If He should show up n the ticket,as VP I’ll do the same thing in nov as I’ve done wit fox news..I don’t show up for the Fox News channel much anymore,and I won’t show up at the Polls either
I don’t like what the Times said either.Its obvious to me after all these yrs that it was a typical left wing attack,but to Hear O’reilly sit there like Mister goody two shoes ,and condem anybody,after the way He and the rest of his crew has smeared Huckabee,will never wash until there’s an apology to Mike

What’s a matter Carl… AKA disgruntled Romney supporter?

Can’t bring yourself to post about all the buzzing around hypocrite McKing?

Here…I will help you out…(although you rarely dare to post my remarks)

OMG:

Now McKing is speaking like Mike?! Consider McKings press release On the 19th…which was similar to Clintons and Obamas…

Senator McCain Statement On Resignation Of Fidel Castro

“Today’s resignation of Fidel Castro is nearly half a century overdue. For decades, Castro oversaw an apparatus of repression that denied liberty to the people who suffered under his dictatorship.

“Yet freedom for the Cuban people is not yet at hand, and the Castro brothers clearly intend to maintain their grip on power. That is why we must press the Cuban regime to release all political prisoners unconditionally, to legalize all political parties, labor unions and free media, and to schedule internationally monitored elections.

“Cuba’s transition to democracy is inevitable; it is a matter of when - not if. With the resignation of Fidel Castro, the Cuban people have an opportunity to move forward and continue pushing for the moment that they will truly be free. America can and should help hasten the sparking of freedom in Cuba. The Cuban people have waited long enough.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now compare what he is saying NOW to what Mike’s press release was on the 19th…
Mike Huckabee Statement on Fidel Castro’s Resignation
February 19, 2008
“The Cuban people deserve nothing less than free and fair elections which would provide the only hope for a prosperous and democratic Cuba. Until Fidel Castro is dead there can be no significant movement towards reform in Cuba. Raul Castro has proven that he’s as much a tyrant and dictator as his brother Fidel. Simply providing more power to another dictator does nothing to promote freedom and democracy to the Cuban people.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In other words out of ALL four candidates Huckabee was the ONLY one that had the common sense to see that even with the change of power…NOTHING is going to change in Cuba until Castro is dead.

Pretty smart man. Stands above the rest. Tell it like it is Mike!

Go Mike!

why the polls ? There’s only one difference between these canidates, McCain knows military the other two are lost on that one. With any of them, in the next four years we will not have secure boarders, seaports or airways, we will have 12 lillion illegals draining our social services, over running our jails and prisons, taxes will go thru the roof for the goverment to pay everyones healthcare. There will be genicide taking place in all the hot spots on the planet. Our military will no longer exist as we know it. clintons loathe the military, Obama doesn’t understand what their for maybe glorified boy scout goverment program I hope in four years there will be a true American conservative who remembers American vaules, morals, ethics, our strength, our wonderful history, someone who will lead us back on the right track. Don’t see one in the works yet but never lose hope.

The Republicans are facing their worst defeat since 1964 with Barry Goldwater. Unfortunately
for the country Hillary and especially Obama more nearly imitate Jimmy Carter rather than
LBJ. I’m afraid we’re in for a rough row to hoe for the next four years. At the end of the
four years hopefully Gingrich or Rudy step up to bat to dig us out of the resulting mess
as “The Gipper” did.
Item 2..Follow the Money. Want the Mexicans to go back home? Disallow the transfer of

I COULD HAVE SWORN THAT IN THIS COUNTRY THAT THING WE ALL KNOW AS THE CONSTUTION GURRANTEED ALL AMERICANS FREEDOM OF RELIGON IF THIS IS TRUE WHY DOES IT MATTER WHAT RELIGON Sen. Obama is? Sen Clinton knows that Sen. Obama is a Christen and the fact the she won’t step up and say that gives me reason to mistrust every thing else she has to say. The message I get from all the controversy about the mans religion is, in this country if you happen to be anything other then a christen you are not suited for public office. I think the question should be is he a threat to to the country and does he have any ties to any terrorist groups, once those questions have been answered we need to move on. Sen. Clinton had my vote right up to the point of her choosing not to answer truthfully a simple question that she knew the answer to Obama gets my vote now Muslim or not.

Comment by Lloyd Hansen

The general election is eight months away. Obama is peaking too soon. After he has electrified the masses with hope, change and si se puede, what else will he have? Deval Patrick has only given so many speeches in his lifetime and hope and change are buzzwords that will soon fall on deaf ears. There are also a lot of variables that will come into play in the meantime. What if Hillary stays in the race until the DNC? What if Obama constantly makes gaffes like he has on NAFTA and bombing Pakistan? What if scandals like Rezko get larger and more pronounced? What if his liberal voting record is widely publicized? Obama has a lot of skeletons in the closet.

McCain, on the other hand is more than happy to fly under the radar at times. He is currently courting the media and party leaders while waiting for the right jabs at Obama to present themselves. The American public will warm up to McCain and they have more than enough time to do it. I’ll be interested to revisit these polls in August and see how much McCain has gained on Obama.

Obama = communism, maybe…

Not sure if any of you have been following the tense situation right now in Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. Basically, Colombia went over into Equador’s territory and killed the #2 leader in the FARC organization (communist revolutionary group in Colombia that is responsible for a majority of the drug supply in the US and kidnapping almost 1000 people). While killing the guy, they found his computer and Colombia has been releasing documents that they found on it.

What’s scary is that in one of these letters there are some “gringos” basically guaranteeing Obama will win and they want to start talking with the FARC as a result…if this is not a reason to be against Obama (politically aligning and talking with one of our biggest enemies which terrorize millions), I don’t know what is…

“The gringos called for a meeting with the minister to ask him to tell us they are interested in talking about several topics. They claim the new president in their country will be Obama and that these people are interested in their fellow citizens. Obama will support neither Plan Colombia nor the signature of the Free Trade Agreement. In this regard, we replied we are interested in relations with the governments that are on equal grounds and that in the case of the United States, a public statement voicing their interest in talking to the FARC is needed, given their eternal war against us.”

Attached is the full document from the computer:
http://english.eluniversal.com/2008/03/03/en_int_art_memo-from-raul-reyes_03A1403519.shtml

Also, in a separate note, it was stated that Chavez gave the FARC $300 million and sold them over 100 pounds of uranium. This is all currently being reported broadly in the latin media…

Republicans’ message to McCain?
Posted: 05:26 PM ET

Mike Huckabee speaks to supporters at the Fort Worth Stockyards February 29, 2008 in Fort Worth, Texas.
FROM CNN’s Jack Cafferty:

There is a poll out that raises serious questions about whether Republicans really like Mike Huckabee or whether they really don’t like John McCain.

It’s a USA Today/Gallup poll that says 49% of Republicans surveyed think Mike Huckabee should stay in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. This can’t be very comforting for John McCain who is the presumed nominee, almost half of Republicans don’t want Huckabee to go. Only 46% say Huckabee should drop out. If McCain’s popularity was what it should be, that number would be much higher. An even larger margin of Conservative Republicans, 54% to 42%, want Huckabee to stay in this thing.

This has to be tough on John McCain’s ego, not to mention his possible chances to win the White House. Ahead of the Texas primary tomorrow, The Dallas Morning News has endorsed Mike Huckabee even though the newspaper admits he has no chance of winning. The Dallas paper says a vote for Huckabee would be “a good investment in the Republican Party’s future”, adding he’s been “on the right side of campaign finance reform and environmental issues.”

As for McCain, the editorial board says his age and “choleric temperament gave us pause particularly when contrasted to Mr. Huckabee’s sunny-side-up brand of conservatism.”

How the Republican Party Committed National Suicide

Mathematically Impossible

By Adam Graham on Mar 3, 08

Mathematically impossible has become a phrase those who’ve watched coverage of the Mike Huckabee presidential campaign have heard ad nauseum. I become very wary of overused phrases, because they sound very much like talking points rather than facts.

Mathematically impossible is one of those talking point phrases that is inaccurate. It is mathematically impossible for Huckabee to win the nomination outright through the number of delegates won at upcoming primaries and caucuses. It is not mathematically impossible for him to win the nomination. In order to secure the nomination a candidate needs 1191 delegates. In order to be assured of the nomination before the convention, a candidate must have 1191 pledged delegates. A pledged delegate is bound to support the candidate they are pledged to no matter what. Low poll numbers in the general election, substantive allegations of felonious acts, or acting like Tom Cruise on Oprah Winfrey will not deny a candidate the votes of his pledged delegates on the first ballot.

On the other hand, unpledged delegates can vote for whomever they want on the convention floor. Many news organizations, in a rush to seal the deal for their long-time media darling, have called unpledged delegates to see how they would vote and find many saying theyd support McCain.

Of course, the problem here is the convention is not being held today or a week from now. Rather the convention is an event that is six months in the future. Six months is an eternity in politics. Six months ago, Rudy Giuliani was the frontrunner. Political careers can be destroyed in weeks. Therefore to assume the thoughts of pledged delegates right now will be their thoughts six months from now assumes far too much in our fluid political world.

Only when a candidate has 1191 delegates pledged (and McCain only has 874). can we say he is the nominee. Until that occurs, it is mathematically possible for someone else to be the winner.

The term mathematically impossible is incredibly inaccurate. As every baseball fan knows, math gives hope to every improbable cause. Even the Tampa Bay Devil Rays were not mathematically eliminated from baseballs playoff race until Mid-September of last season.

Unfortunately, one has to admit the term has been largely successful in achieving its goals, as many conservatives have surrendered in the fight against John McCain, acceding to a nominee that we cannot stand and tolerate. Many have, instead, found their purpose as unethical saboteurs of the Democratic Party process crossing over to defeat Hillary or Obama, depending on their strategic view.

In the end, this election has been a lesson in how the media can manipulate elections and create news, with phrases repeated often and long enough. News anchors and stories chattering on about impossibilities and candidates having no chance as a matter of fact, not a matter of opinion or analysis, have created a perception that doesnt match fact. But the constant, incessant buzz is taking a toll and creating the reality it alleges.

Weve also learned that just become someone labels a news organization conservative doesnt mean it will provide reliable information on the presidential election. And alas, blogs, for which so many people have so much hope, are only as good as their biases and sources allow them to be.

For whatever reason, be it John McCains Washington Insider status v. Huckabee as the man from Arkansas, a fear of losing to Obama or Hillary should the primary campaign go on one minute longer, conservative media has been just as likely to play the game as the liberal press, only with more passion. The same people who were telling us a few weeks ago that Mike Huckabee was only staying in this race to help John McCain, are now complaining about Mike Huckabee hurting John McCain by continuing in this race.

Perhaps it was because outlets such as National Review are greatly responsible for the McCain ascendancy. Conservative media, including yours truly, spent a great part of December providing a contextless attack on the record of Mike Huckabee, while ignoring the rise of John McCain in New Hampshire, thus giving him an effective free pass.

Much to their annoyance, Huckabee not only survived these attacks, but won eight states contests. I assumed that Huckabee was obviously running to be John McCains VP, and found egg on my face as he continued on. I was also guilty of attacking the unconservative portions of his record and platform in my writing and ignoring the positive parts. I was man enough to own up to my errors and admit that Id goofed They werent.

These errors in perception created by conservative media hounds are huge. A man who favors restoring Americas military to the same percentage of GDP that it was at under Ronald Reagan is thought by many to be as weak on national defense as Jimmy Carter.

The lesson for the future is that media bias exists, regardless of ideological stripe, and that no media outlet can be trusted to do your thinking for you. Of course, its still possible for voters to revolt against media-imposed groupthink in this cycle when they go to the polls in Texas and Ohio. After all, its not mathematically impossible.

“Obama as a Libertian”

Not even close. He is a tax and spend liberal through and through. Obama is all about controlling the general population and implementing his socialist programs. You probably meant to call him a populist, which is more fitting but still not entirely correct.

Ron Paul is a true libertarian and look at the reception he has received.

Hillary = experience ???????

What experience, she hasn’t been a chief excutive. Is she counting her tenure as the First Lady and her failed bid at health care reform????

Being Mrs. William Jefferson Clinton didn’t make her Vice President Clinton, ask Al Gore.

Only office she has held is a term and a half as the junior Senator from New York.

I iwll grant that whe has run some pretty hard campaigns but so it seems has Barack Obama, whom also is a junior Senator.

So where is the Beef?

Comment by Sense&Sensibility

As an independent, I have been watching all three candidates fight it out. I have to say that of all the candidates who started in 2007, there are two who have impressed me — Dodd and Huckabee. What those two men said and how they conducted themselves should be applauded.

The questions I have for Mrs. Clinton go something like this:
When will you release all of your tax returns since your husband was in office? I think we should be entitled to see them all assuming she has nothing to hide. Also, I would love to see a clear and plain written statement from the Clinton campaign (signed by a verifiable signature from Hillary) that specifically either admits or denies that the Clintons (as a married couple) have received monies from business dealings in Kazackstan (for uranium), Dubais (investments), Saudi Arabia (investments), and various other dealings outside of the United States.

Please be clear — I love capitalism and I do not begrudge anyone making money. I DO NOT however think that anyone who occupies the White House (or anyone in its Cabinet or other elected office holders) should have active nor recent (last 15 years) business dealings with ANYONE whose investments involve uranium, or investments with people in the middle east. I do not believe that all people in the middle east are corrupt, however, our commander in chief should not be married to someone (or acting on her own behalf) investing with folks in the middle east while tensions and terrorism are still concerns. Our president needs to be above reproach. It does not look good to Israel or our other allies that a potential president has been very active in the Muslim part of the Middle East!

If she does not release those tax returns, assuming she triumphs in the primary, I will vote for John McCain. I believe he is honest and is not hiding anything. I hope my beliefs are not misplaced.

Were Clinton to reveal the now undisclosed source of her income she would never have won a single Great Lakes state.
Not one reporter has asked her how much of her wealth has come from companies dealing in subprime mortages.Clinton has railed against the compensation received by the execs of these companies–but not against the companies and their policies.
Investments before have mirrored those of Henry Cisneros (lately of Countrywide) -Bill’s former Secretary of HUD.
Why do reporters shy away from asking pointed questions about this..while Clinton deflects with statements about the medias softness on Obama ?

P.S. This is for Hilary haters: WHY ALL MEN HATE WOMEN BEFORE MIDNIGHT AND LOVING THEM SO MUCH AFTER MIDNIGHT! DO YOU REMEMBER HER ADD?! IT WAS 3:00 AM PHONE CALL ADD - SO? IT WAS TIME WHEN YOU GUYS LOVE WOMEN! GET A GRIP!

Finally, the Reps can tell the truth about who they want to win the democratic primary. They have always known that Barack Hussein Obama would be easier to be, but to manipulate the democrats into voting for Obama, they stated they wanted Hillary to win (that’s just reverse psychology). I’ve always contended this to be the truth. Now that Obama has screwed up royally, they can finally say they want him to win because EVERYONE knows that McCain WILL beat Obama. He would have a hard time beating Hillary. Wake up Democrats and vote for the one who can beat McCain - VOTE HILLARY.

TO JAMES STANLEY,
You are a RACISTS PIG, not all muslims are terrorists, and Obama isn’t even an Muslim. Thanks for showing the true IGNORANT colors of the Republican party and those Fox News Watchers, you guys are more of Fox news Slaves, believing such ridiculous stories instead of researching on your own and finding out the truth. The sad part is your statement sounds more like radical crazy muslim terrorists than anything Obama or any candidate has said!!!

I am a 66 year old white male and I would like to know why so many Media Television programs spend so much time and detail on what Barack’s minister
Dr.Wright said, and so little on John McCain’s endorsements by John Hage and Rod Parsley. They both have made as many bad or negative comments as Dr.
Wright has. I don’t see one of the Media programs making an issue of it every day and playing it over again and again. I also do not see any
commentators demanding John McCain repudiate the endorsements and give the money contributed back. Is this an example of Media Racial Bias???

Seeing as so many of the Media television programs are questioning why Barack has not quit his church. I would also like to know how many Catholics
(which I was for 13 years) have left the Catholic Church because of the Pedophile Priests. I would like to know how many people have stopped following
John Hagee because of his comments about the Catholic Church and Religion. I would like to know how many have left the Ministry of Ron Parsley because of his preaching about the Islamic faith and Nuclear War to kill Islamic people all off. I think it is only
fair that the Media Television Programs run the Hage and Parsley clips for the same amount of time and as often as they have Dr. Wrights.

I don’t understand. If Hillary has this so-called “wealth” of foreign policy experience gained from the time in her husband’s White House, why
wouldn’t Hillary rush to get that information to the public? (The Libary papers, Her Earmarks, and their Tax Filings.) How Hillary spent her time in the White House has been well documented. With Hillary’s
campaign in this much trouble, does it make sense that we should have to wait this long for the documents that could prove her time was spent managing affairs of state? She is clearly stonewalling, and her supporters should really be asking themselves why. It doesn’t make any sense that Hillary would, since that information would be exactly what she needs to rub Obama’s nose in her
achievements. They would make it possible to convince her critics once and for all that her 35 years of experience is documented and a matter of public
record. This is not a woman who allows people to keep her waiting, especially when she is waging the political fight of her life. The ONLY reason this is taking so long is because those papers will show that Hillary embellished her resume quite a bit, and that will kill her “experience” argument for good.

In to her trip to Bosnia she has told this story at least (3) three times during her campaign stops. She was under Sniper fire, She was wearing
a Bullet-proof vest and they had to run to the waiting cars. Now videos prove that was an out right lie. There were no Snipers, If you watch the Video
you will see they (Hillary and Chelsea) (Who in their right mind would take a child into a War Zone?) were not wearing Bullet-Proof vests and they did not run
to their cars. This is her foreign experience. Just another LIE!!!

In regards to her being against NAFTA her own papers or schedules now show she actively campaigned in support of NAFTA. Just another LIE!!!

She said she was instrumental in making the Peace in Ireland Now other diplomats that were there say that is not true. This is her foreign
experience. Just another LIE!!!

Hillary claimed to have negotiated the open borders in Kosnavo, when she visited there. The truth is they were opened (3) three days
before she went there. Just another LIE!!!

Hillary knew the Democratic Rules that were violated in Florida and in Michigan. She was totally aware of the rules when she started to run for President and she supported them, so ask yourself why she wants to change them now? Do rules and laws only apply when they benefit you? Now the rules should be changed because they benefit her. No just another LIE!!!

Hillary is being sued and soon will be prosecuted for Campaign Fraud in California. The Video is on YouTube.

Hillary and Bill both received funds from Rezko. Why has Hillary not ackowledged it? Why has she not told the American people about that? Nor have they returned the funds.

What other LIES has she told in her Campaign???

WE CAN NO LONGER SUPPORT A WOMAN WHO WILL TELL BIG LIES TO BECOME THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. HOW WILL WE BE ABLE TO KNOW
WHEN SHE IS LYING OR TELLING THE TRUTH TO US IN THE FUTURE??? HOW WOULD WE KNOW IF SHE WAS LYING TO US AS PRESIDENT??? SHE IS NO DIFFERENT THAN GEORGE
W. BUSH IN REGARDS TO LYING TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO KNOW WHEN DID THIS BECOME A RACE BETWEEN MAN AND WOMAN???

WE NEED TO GET THIS INFORMATION OUT IN ALL THE REMAINING STATES THAT WILL HOLD PRIMARIES OR CAUCUSES.

Putting Rev. Wright’s Preaching in Perspective (by Diana Butler Bass)

http://blog.beliefnet.com/godspolitics/2008/03/obamas-pastor-by-diana-butler.html

The current media flap over the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama’s former pastor, strikes me as nothing short of strange. Anyone who attends church on
a regular basis knows how frequently congregants disagree with their ministers. To sit in a pew is not necessarily assent to a message preached
on a particular day. Being a church member is not some sort of mindless cult, where individuals believe every word preached. Rather, being a church
member means being part of a community of faith–a gathered people, always diverse and sometimes at odds, who constitute Christ’s body in the world.

But the attack on Rev. Wright reveals something beyond ignorance of basic dynamics of Christian community. It demonstrates the level of
misunderstanding that still divides white and black Christians in the United States. Many white people find the traditions of African-American preaching
offensive, especially when it comes to politics.

I know because I am one of those white people. My first sustained encounter with African-American preaching came in graduate school about twenty years
ago. I had been assigned as a teaching assistant to a course in Black Church Studies. The placement surprised me, since I had no background in the
subject. But the professor assured me that “anyone with experience teaching American religion” would be able to handle the load.

The subject matter was not, as the professor indicated, difficult. The emotional content, however, was. To prepare, I had to read literally
thousands of pages of black preaching and theology covering the entire scope of American history. While the particulars of preaching changed through
time, one thing did not. Throughout the entire corpus, black Christian leaders leveled a devastating critique against their white brothers and sisters–accusing white Christians of maintaining “ease in Zion” while allowing black people to suffer injustice and oppression.

Typical of the form used by black preachers is Frederick Douglass’ address, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” first delivered on July 5, 1852.
The address, a political sermon, forcefully attacks white culture. “Fellow-citizens,” Douglass proclaims, “above your national, tumultuous joy,
I hear the mournful wails of millions! Whose chains, heavy and grievous yesterday, are, today, rendered more intolerable by the jubilee shouts that
reach them.” He goes on to calls American conduct “hideous and revolting” and accuses white Christians of trampling upon and disregarding both the
constitution and the Bible. He concluded his sermon with the words, “For revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy, America reigns without a
rival.”

This was very hard to take. I confess: nearly everything I read that semester pained and angered me. But four months of listening to voices that
I wanted to reject made me different. I began to hear the power of the critique. I came to appreciate the prophetic nature of black preaching. I recognized that these voices emerged from a very distinct historical experience. And I admired the narrative interplay between the Bible and social justice. Over time, they taught me to hear the Gospel from an angular perspective–the angle of slaves, freed blacks, of those who feared lynching, of those who longed for Africa, those who could not attend good
schools. From them, I learned that liberation through Jesus was a powerful thing. And that white Americans really did need to repent when it came to
race.

Learning to listen was not easy. It took patience, historical imagination, and lots of complaining to my friends–even my African-American ones.
Eventually, I figured out that even if your ancestors had been the oppressors, you can enter into the world of those who had been oppressed with generosity and a heart open to transformation.

As MSNBC, CNN, and FOX endlessly play the tape of Rev. Wright’s “radical” sermons today, I do not hear the words of a “dangerous” preacher (at least
any more dangerous than any preacher who takes the Gospel seriously!) No, I hear the long tradition that Jeremiah Wright has inherited from his
ancestors. I hear prophetic critique. I hear Frederick Douglass. And, mostly, I hear the Gospel slant–I hear it from an angle that is not natural
to me. It is good to hear that slant.

That is not, of course, comfortable for white people. Nor is it easily understood in sound bites. It does not easily fit in a contemporary political campaign. But it is a deep spiritual river in American faith and
culture, a river that–as I had to learn–flows from the throne of God.

Diana Butler Bass holds a doctorate in American religion from Duke University. She is the author of six books including Christianity for the
Rest of Us (HarperOne, 2006).
