Colonel Bud Day on John McCain

John McCain seldom discusses a defining aspect of his life: being a POW.
Colonel George E. “Bud” Day is the most decorated service man since General Douglas MacArthur.
Day has been awarded the Medal of Honor, Air Force Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Hearts, in fact, more than 70 medals and awards. He calls John McCain a hero, and thinks voters deserve to know more about his Hanoi Hilton cell mate.

alt=”Carl Cameron Interviews Bud Day” width=”300″ height=”270″ /> Col. Day, went under the call sign “Misty.” He was the first jet pilot to fly into North Vietnam and after more than 175 sorties he was shot down in August of ‘67, exactly 2 months before McCain was.
McCain, a man whose father and grandfather were renowned Admirals, was a prized propaganda prisoner for the enemy. The Colonel says their captors called McCain “the Prince.”
McCain was more than half dead when Day first laid eyes on his fellow POW.

“I took one look at him and my brain instantly said they dropped this guy off on me to claim that we let him die. He was just emaciated, very, very skinny, in this awful body cast.”

The colonel and John McCain were cell-mates in that tiny cell for two of their more than 5 yrs of torture in captivity. Day’s broken arm was re-broken during torture and healed in such a way he would not be able to fly again. McCain, broken and injured himself, helped his fellow cell-mates rehabilitate their ravaged bodies.

“so I got some strips of bamboo, smuggled em into the room, John put his foot in my arm pit and pulled on my wrist until we could get the bone forced back down.”

McCain himself today continues to suffer the injuries of torture. He still cannot raise his arms above his shoulders. But he does not like to talk about his time as a prisoner of war.

“he just doesn’t trade on that. I think he feels that it’s wrong to trade on being a hero, but he is.”

Check back here for Carl Cameron’s interview with Col. Bud Day and tonight on Special Report with Brit Hume we will have the complete story.

McCain doesn’t talk about his sons serving in the military right now either. I percieve that not only as a sign of integrity, but a clever man also. Two good qualities for a president.

Great interview. These are the “room-mates” of Capt Nels Tanner, who is living in Covington Tennessee and doing well also.Good luck to John McCain.

The President is Commander in Chief of our Millitary. It is telling that John McCain is the overwhelming choice of these men and women who have served and are serving our country. I believe this is due to three major reasons.

First, John McCain will never allow our troops to be wasted due to stupid rules of engagement. When we place our troops in harms way, we owe it to them to allow them to use all of their resources to preserve and protect their missions. Ask any Vietnam Veteran what they hated about that war and the two overwhelming problems will be bewildering rules of engagement that artificially placed them in danger, and the April 1975 Saigon Embassy fiasco that made all of the lives, wounds, time, and resources wasted.

Second, John McCain will never allow our troops to be wasted by half hearted commitments and nebulous mission statements. When you are placing these people, mainly young men out in the battle zones we owe them a clear statement as to why they are there and what we want to accomplish with their blood and sacrifices. Most of the troops currently in Iraq still support the mission, because they are seeing real progress. But they are getting burned out. We need to step up recruitment to give them longer times away from Iraq before they go back. My son in law will be stateside for less than one year before he goes back.

Third, John McCain understands the Collin Powell doctrine of using overwhelming force. This doctrine saves both our and the enemy troops lives. To accomplish this we need to ensure that our troops have the best equipment possible. No more of Rumsfield’s crap about fighting with what was in stock so the vendor doesn’t lose money by retrofitting Humvees with necessary armour etc.

Finally, the military is the most integrated part of American Culture. John McCain would not even think of Hillary Clinton’s racist appeal in the USA Today Interview

“hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me. There’s a pattern emerging here,” she said; the man would not even think it.”

Shame on you Hillary, move over so we can move on to the important issues of the general election.

Astute call by “Obama the Uniter” regarding McGovern. That’s why McGovern could never be President. One needs courage to stick with one’s convictions. If McGovern thought Hillary was the best candidate, then there would be no need to change. Vote your convictions and let the chips fall where they may.

As a former marine I do not believe that ANYONE other than former military should be commander in chief. If we elect tree hugging liberals than we will only let our military down with unclear missions and early withdrawal, like somalia (which is stilla mess). I don’t know who these liberals are trying to protect by wanting us to withdraw, our military is 100% volunteers, and it would disgrace ALL who served if we packed up our toys and went home like a whiney, spoiled brat, when things don’t go exactly as planned! McCAIN IN ‘08 OLLIE NORTH IN ‘16!

Senator McCain’s 17 military awards and decorations…big deal! How can that record begin to compete with Obama’s distinguished 20-year award for attending a racist church? McCain supporters get your priorities straight…

Thank you John McCain for serving so valiantly….You have my vote. Barack Obama does not deserve to be in the contest….much less run against someone who has fought so long and hard for our country, such as you have. As for Hillary and her minions….time to stop…America is sending you and Bill a message…we don’t want either of you in the White House again or in Washington, but it looks like we’ll have to put up with a Sen. Clinton, at least for a while.

To mention a few attributes: Loyal, intelligent, patriotic, well-educated, distinguished war veteran with integrity, moral values, excellent work ethic and established record, well-versed in politics and man-enough to handle adversity, terrorists and promote bipartisanship…IS there any other candidate as worthy of the Office of the President of the United States and Commander in Chief??? I think NOT

Re: Capt. John McCain USN (Ret.) (USNA ‘5 8) as President and therefore C in C of the US military;

It is a basic tenet of military leadership that a leader does not send a trooper to do a job, that the leader would not do him(her)self. The boy president clinton was an abominable choice for Commander-in-Chief because he had never served a day, was effectively a draft dodger and was also known to have denigrated our military as he fed from the state and federal trough. His “wife”, who shared his views, would not be one iota different.

We LOVE McCain and the other vets along with those serving in the US Military and protecting us from the moslem terrorists. Neither Obama or Hillary has the experience or the cojones to do so.

Yeah, there’s a reason why McCain doesn’t talk much about being a POW: It’s because he was a collaborator.

Comment by Fred Snyder

Senator McCain is my choice to be our next President. Precisely because of his military experience, he knows best the true cost of war and is best qualified to decide where, and when, and how to fight. His record of working with the opposite party in Congress is much better than Senator Clinton’s. Senator Obama has no record. Senator Obama talks a good talk. But he has yet to walk the walk enough for America to trust him. Experience matters more than desire when you ask to be the President.

John McCain is a true hero.. Someone needs to tell the world what John has been through in his life time..True hero’s don’t brag and stretch the truth..John isn’t going to tell what he has been through but someone should..Contrast this with such brave men like John Kerry and his 3 self imposed purple hearts in a month or so, or that great statatition, Jimmy Carter,or even Lyndon Johnson, who flaunted his military career, even though it was just a short flight out of Australia and back. These past presidents and those trying to be future presidents were and are only self serving..The only thing Hillary and Obammmma has going for them is that they are both from Chicago..They know all the crooks and how to get them to work for them…

At 62, proudly American, I regret I could not serve– I tried, but health issues prevented it–I’d bank on the fact that ONLY John McCain has the wisdom, dedication and resolve to protect Americans of all ethnicities. His opponents have agendas varying from “power hunger” to “cultural change” that would profoundly negatively impact our Nation and some of its citizens. One has to only look at their circle of associates to ascertain their probable agendas.
If asked to serve today—by and for John McCain and our nation—I’d gladly step to the plate.
For generations to come, what is decided here and now will have more world wide impact than any election ever before. This nation requires McCain at the helm, to do otherwise is imprudent and self destructive.

I also am supporting McCain for President. I’ve supported him from the start when just about everyone gave him up for dead, but like Lazarus, he rose and I believe, for a reason. This should be the perfect time for the democrats..it is the perfect storm, the economy by most accounts is in recession, the war is still unpopular and McCain’s age is probably going to be a factor, but having all this against him, he WILL WIN THE WHITE HOUSE because he is the ONLY candidate that can bring this country together. He proves time and again that neither party (republican or democrat) has a lock on truth or perfection. We have to listen to each other and go with our gut feeling as to the best course of action without regard to party affiliation. McCain has done this several times and it hasn’t been easy as he has gone against some of his own party, but when was the last time Obama or Clinton ever owned up that republicans had good ideas such as our philosophy regarding entitlement programs and believing that throwing money at everything will never solve the problems that personal responsibility and integrity can. Core beliefs are one thing, but McCain has the wisdom to know the difference between abandoning one’s core values and economic policy that can be compromised .McCAIN I AM WITH YOU ALL THE WAY TO THE WHITE HOUSE. YOU EARNED IT!!

Sen McCain, many people will serve our country honorably and well, but we all know what happened with you. I was so proud when you stepped off that plane, coming home from Nam. The foolish young people supporting Obama can’t even imagine how proud Americans were of you.

George Day is well known in my area of Florida in military as well as civil matters — he helped champion older vets’ healthcare for life, a wonderful tribute to our old soldiers. George Day is indeed an honorable man and would not support John McCain if he did not believe in not just his military record but in his statesmanlike career for many years. John McCain does not follow anyone blindly and has been seen as a Republican maverick because he thinks things through and then goes about making the right resolution even in this nasty political world we are living in. He will be a great president.

Thank you, George Day.

I was born in ‘25 during the big depression so don’t tell me about the economy today. I graduated from high school in ‘43 and had to volenteer for the draft twice, the first time I was classified 4F. I was accepted in December ‘43 and entered active duty in January ‘44. In December ‘44 I was a POW in Germany. I only spent four and one half months starving to death in a work camp. There is no fun in loosing your freedom. I was a 2d Lt Infantry when I served in Korea in ‘53. I believe the only reason I did not serve in Viet Naum was my pilot qualifications was no on my records in Washington D. C. I am 82 years old and strongly recommend the young man John McCain for President of the United States of America and Commander and Chief of our Armed Forces during this time when we are in a World War. It is time for a draft to fight this war. It will not be over when we winn in Iraq because it will continue until the enemy are all dead. This is not a normal war. Have you made a contribution to John. I have and incourage you to do so. Your vote for John McCain is a vote to continue the freedom we have and the good times we are in with low taxes and a proven leader that has stood the test. McCain in ‘08.

As a retired career military enlisted and officer, I respect McCain’s military service, but his 24 years as a self serving ‘maverick’ RINO politician utterly disqualifies him for POTUS! Remember McCain-Feingold rape of 1st Amendment, his many Anti 2nd Amendment votes, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Lieberman, McCains absolute support for AMNESTY for criminals, i.e., ILLEGAL ALIENS, his too frequent legendary temper explosions, even at his republican peers - you WANT this MISFIT as POTUS? IMO, whichever one of the three politicians competing for POTUS WILL DESTROY this once great REPUBLIC, established by the Constitution and Bill of Rights and disregarded for decades now.

I’ve voted for the Lessor of Two Evils for 50 years now, and I’ve always gotten evil, so I’ll no longer vote for the Lessor of the Two Evils!

Other than the fact that the “old guy” McCain just rocks, he’s been through hell and come back full throttle.

One must wonder how exquisite the chills of fear will be that run up the spines of the Communist North Vietnamese and other Communist leaders–at the prospect of Mc for President.

This is a good thing, a very, very good thing.

And it won’t be limited to Communists. No doubt “Imadinerjacket” of Iran and like minded mullah-mad fanatics will cringe at the thought of a McPresident.

Sorry, Carroll Kemp (above)…fact is at the very least Obama is an apologist for Islamic fanatics, and Hillary’s probably not a contender.

Fact is, Mc knows the enemy, and he’s not going to bend to their will. Obama certainly will–he’s stated as much. Hillary’s also an appeaser.

So realize, the one who faces the enemy without fear, will be the one who leads the world against fanaticism, somehow people lose sight of this and don’t realize capitulation will only result in total loss of our cherished liberties.

In Response to Nick Mitchell:

John McCain has said all that he needs to, about his time as a prisoner of war, in his book, “FAITH OF MY FATHERS”. If Mitchell had read that book, he should know better.

Put on the uniform of our country; be sent into combat with our mortal enemy; be captured and tortured and tortured and tortured…return home and continue to serve your country. That’s who McCain is and I am very proud to call him a comrade-in-arms.

Two great Americans. I have some trouble with McCain’s RINO status but if there ever was a time to vote for the lesser of two evils, this is it.

What is the alternative? Barack Obama, John Kerry, Al Gore?? No thanks.

Besides that, I support the Bush’s and still strongly support W.

Comment by Rod Smith

As men go, John McCain seems to have a high level of integrity, such as is rarely seen. I think he is the real war hero that Kerry pretended to be. McCain really seems to have many of the things the pied-piper Obama oh-so-smoothly talks about, but hasn’t done (such as respectful campaigning, bipartisanship, NEW politics - that one really sticks in my craw, since Obama currently has the most liberal voting record in the Senate). And in the process, McCain has angered many, including apparent conservatives (such as Carroll Kemp, see post above). And while I supported him in 2000 and this election cycle, I of course don’t always agree with all of his positions. But I am pretty sure that Bin Laden fears McCain far more than Hil or ‘Bama.

So we all need to get out there and support McCain - even small donations, and talk to friends and neighbors. Because this election really IS historical - McCain is, I think, the best choice to counter the world’s decent into chaos.

And look for the radical Muslims to try to get Obama elected (or Hillary, in the unlikely event she gets the Dem nomination). Last election, remember that Bib Laden tried to get Kerry elected, but his clumsy efforts to manipulate US backfired. So this time, I expect them to try again, but to be more sophisticated.

Comment by Chris

Carroll, allrighty then. But I see no evil in Mc at all, lesser or greater. The man has earned his stripes.

Franklin USMC Gage, AMEN! I’d pay for Nick’s ticket OUT of the USA. Seriously. But under one condition and one condition only, that Nick renounce his citizenship and that the gov’t revoke his ability to come back for any reason, ever. :)

The words of a hero?

McCain admits that three to four days after he was captured, he promised the Vietnamese, “I’ll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital.”

Less than two weeks after McCain was taken to a hospital, Hanoi’s press began quoting him giving specific military information, including the name of the aircraft carrier on which he was based, numbers of U.S. pilots that had been lost, the number of aircraft in his flight, information about location of rescue ships and the order of which his attack was supposed to take place.”

Comment by Scarlete

Colonel “Bud” Day is a very fine gentleman and a true hero in war and peace: I was residing in Ft. Walton Bch. FL when he and his associates banned together for the purpose of retired military service personnel and their dependents to receive their full medical benefits — entitlement the US government long-ago promised us but reneged. After a long and hard legal battle with our government, Colonel Day and his associates were successful. Consequently, I and countless others are appreciative recipients of their mission.

Why did McCain shutdown efforts to find the MIA POWS? Does anyone really believe that a real hero would treat a family member of a POW like this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CazKanlYDg

What kind of war hero makes the sister of a MIA POW cry?! I’ll tell you: the same kind of petty little man that calls his wife a C*NT, in front of other people - no less.

Hey McCain how many sleepless nights do you think Dolores Alfond has had because she doesn’t know what happened to her brother? McCain do you feel like a big man putting women in their place?

Hey, McCain! You made a bit more of an effort to normalize relations with North Vietnam in 1990, didn’t you? You fought for that tooth and nail, didn’t you?! What happened? Did the North Vietnamese pass the hat among enough American MIA POWS to line your pockets?

What is it, McCain? Is it easier for you to pick fights with women - because they generally aren’t taller than you? Go on McCain. Walk out. Get out of here! You make a lot of us sick, anyway. Go do some more business with your buddies in North Vietnam, so you can buy that ninth house!

This is one of the reasons I am NOT voting for John McCain.

USA Today — More than 43,000 U.S. troops listed as medically unfit for combat in the weeks before their scheduled deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan since 2003 were sent anyway, Pentagon records show.
This reliance on troops found medically “non-deployable” is another sign of stress placed on a military that has sent 1.6 million servicemembers to the war zones, soldier advocacy groups say.

“It is a consequence of the consistent churning of our troops,” said Bobby Muller, president of Veterans For America. “They are repeatedly exposed to high-intensity combat with insufficient time at home to rest and heal before redeploying.”

The numbers of non-deployable soldiers are based on health assessment forms filled out by medical personnel at each military installation before a servicemember’s deployment.

According to those statistics, the number of troops that doctors found non-deployable, but who were still sent to Iraq or Afghanistan fluctuated from 10,854 in 2003, down to 5,397 in 2005, and back up to 9,140 in 2007

He states he will bring ALL the troops home then send them ALL back. Obama has NO regard for what our troops have fought for. He is willing to throw it all down the drain so he can get ellected, raise taxes, and allow his relatives to attack us and get away with it.
