McCain Takes On Global Climate Change

Portland, Oregan:

Today, John McCain stakes out the greenest position of any Republican presidential candidate in decades. He’ll visit a wind turbine manufacturer in Portland, Oregon… and put his money where his mouth is with a new ad signaling a new direction on the environment for his party.

“I believe that climate change is real. It’s not just a greenhouse gas issue. It’s a national security issue. We have an obligation to future generations to take action and fix it.”

McCain’s climate change ad highlights his courtship of independents & moderates. He chastises the far left for overreacting to the problem & the far right for being too dismissive of it.

“One extreme thinks high taxes and crippling regulation is the solution. Another denies the problem even exists. There’s a better way.”

In his prepared remarks the Republican party’s fall standard-bearer pronounces the debate over the existence of global warming and mankind’s responsibility…over!

“We know that greenhouse gasses are heavily implicated as a cause of climate change. And we know that among all greenhouse gasses, the worst by far is the carbon-dioxide that results from fossil-fuel combustion.”

In an interview with Fox News he said that it is better to accept that climate change exists and take steps to address it:

This movie requires Adobe Flash for playback.

McCain will lay out specific goals for reducing greenhouse gasses -with a cap & trade program. Industries would be given emission targets (caps.) If they produce less than the targets, they could sell (trade) their surplus polluting capacity to those industries and firms unable to meet their targets.

“By the year 2012, we will seek a return to 2005 levels of emission, by 2020, a return to 1990 levels, and so on until we have achieved at least a reduction of sixty percent below 1990 levels by the year 2050. “

McCain will criticize former President Bill Clinton and current President George W Bush for failing to broker an international climate change agreement years ago.

“I will not shirk the mantle of leadership that the United States bears. I will not permit eight long years to pass without serious action on serious challenges. I will not accept the same dead-end of failed diplomacy that claimed Kyoto. The United States will lead and will lead with a different approach – an approach that speaks to the interests and obligations of every nation.”

He specifically hits China and India, two leading polluters for not doing their part.

“No nation should be exempted from its obligations. And least of all should we make exceptions for the very countries that are accelerating carbon emissions while the rest of us seek to reduce emissions.”

But McCain promises to move the U.S. forward with or without others.

“If the efforts to negotiate an international solution that includes China and India do not succeed, we still have an obligation to act.”

Though the GOP has been turning greener in recent years and President Bush acknowledged man’s role in climate change years ago, skeptics of global climate change remain. Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe, last year said:

“the man-made global warming fear machine crossed the ‘tipping point’ in 2007. I am convinced that future climate historians will look back at 2007 as the year the global warming fears began crumbling. The situation we are in now is very similar to where we were in the late 1970’s when coming ice age fears began to dismantle. We are currently witnessing an international awakening of scientists who are speaking out in opposition to former Vice President Al Gore, the United Nations, the Hollywood elitists and the media-driven ‘consensus’ on man-made global warming.”

Seems McCant is doing all he can to force conservatives in the republican party out in the street.
He is drinking the global warming kool aid and expects us to as well.
He is couchintg the shamnesty idea in the guise of comprehensive reform again, thinking we have forgotten last year. Maybe HE has forgotten last year.
It is coming down to who do you dislike the least. Now,it is down to two Socialists or a Liberal. Not too much difference I can see.
If he can’t get us on board with him, we are either sitting it out or we’ll jump ship to a known evil.
I just can’t see him being President.
And I’ve been a conservative Republican my entire life; that’s 60 years.
Where is Romney ? Or Gingrich ?
We need some guts and truth, and I just don’t get it from McCant.

Comment by Mick

Another reason he’s not a real conservative or a real republican. He just bent over and handed the Green’s the K-Y.

The more he tries to woo the independents and liberals, the likely he will win the Republican vote. I am a conservative Republican. I do not believe global warming is more than just the occasional NORMAL cycles in weather that occur. If he keeps down this path, I will be staying home rather than voting. Yes, that might allow Obama to win but I don’t think I can vote for McCain in good conscience.

This is a throw away election for conservatives. After eight years of who ever
we get. The country will will need a long time to heal. The republicans and democrats at this point are not good for the country. What ever cause they have up their pipes at any given time seems to be the issue of the day.

I thought 5 years ago we had 50 or so years left to exsist as a country.
I don’t think we have that long now.

Vast areas of offshore waters outside the western Gulf of Mexico have been placed off limits to drilling by presidential orders and congressional action to protect the tourist economy and avoid the risk of spills and environmental damage.

This is the primary reason we do not have enough domestic oil and have to import oil from Chavez and the Middle East.

How much financial pain does the American consumer have to endure before we permit oil drilling off coastal waters?

We must build more oil refineries and nuclear energy plants. We have to accept some risk. Why not fine the oil companies $750 million and put the CEO in jail for 6 months if they have an oil spill?

Like the ostrich, Congress has their head buried in the sand. Individual states should not be allowed to veto oil and gas exploration and drilling.

We must also end the folly of farm subsidies and ethanol for fuel.

I for one commend John McCain on taking a leadership stance on this issue; one based on internationally-corroborated science rather than ideology. This shows that he has the guts to move this country forward and regain our leadership on the world stage. And to be clear: climate change is NOT a partisan issue — it affects everyone that breathes air on this planet.

If you know the science, you know the danger is real. It’s not about alarmism, it’s about realism. Already billions of dollars have been spent on disaster relief from the increased frequency and strength of storms due to global warming. I can only applaud Sen. John McCain for his boldness in addressing the top issue of our times, and I greatly admire the thoroughness with which he has addressed this issue. Frankly, it makes me strongly consider voting for him in the Presidential election. Yes, I’m a democrat, but I’m also a scientist who understands the science of this issue; and I’ve been sick with concern for the world diving headlong into disaster for some time now.

Para,

If you know the science, you know that the danger is malarky. Many top scientists have just pointed out that the earth is now cooling after a period of being in a normal warming cycle. We can expect global cooling–like we had in the 70’s when we were all told we were headed for a new ice age. The new scientific data shows ice on polls thickening. Unlike Gore’s prediction that the snow pack had permanently fled from the Rocky mountains, this winter was brutal and laid down over 500 inches (you saw correctly–not 50) of snow at Alta and Brighton ski resorts in Utah. The entire region was colder and snowier than usual.

Global warming science has had a lot in common with Chicken Little–the guy who had an acorn fall on his head and concluded the sky was falling and went rushing around alarming all his neighbors! The earth has been much warmer and much colder than it is today. But Gore, who is not a scientist and who had enough power to see that dissenting voices were silenced, has made this acorn (limited information) into a proclamation of international and almost intergallactic doom!

Like poor little Chicken Little, with more evidence he would have learned the facts. Sun activity and other matters to do with tides and currents determine the earth’s temperature.

Liberals, having lost their fear or love of God have to find something of a religion to cling to and they have “invented” the global warming religion to find some mantra to chant to make their petty existence seem to have some meaning.

Alance,

Protecting tourism or fearing environmental damage from spills that haven’t happened and which the liklihood of which can now be carefully controlled is NOT an adequate reason to allow our great nation to be held hostage by Moslem Terrorists.

Comment by Marcy Harris

I will vote for John McCain because he doesn’t hate America like Barak Obama, but then the honeymoon is over. He will be hearing from Republicans about being a traitor to all his party stands for. We don’t buy the crap about global warming–too many top scientists have been silenced who convincingly show it simply is not anything in the control of man one way or another.

We don’t like your open border policies or illegal immigrant amnesties either, John. We will be heard. You would never win this election if we weren’t all voting against Barak Hussein Mohammed Obama (his real given name–check records in his other country through duel citizenship–Kenya).

Comment by Marcy Harris

By the way, my son had to write a paper at the behest of his liberal teacher (global cooling being the acorn on Chicken Little’s head back then) about the new ice age that was soon upon us. Hoax after hoax! Think we’d learn about listening to these alarmists!

Comment by Jeff

Global Warming of course is true the earth really goes through normal warming and cooling ages. Man made global warming, well now we are just being a little proud don’t you think. To think that we can change the weather in a world that has been around and adapted longer than any of us have ever lived combined. Is the air in downtown cities generally dirty, yes. I am a asthmatic and have extreme allergies, so in town out of town i am screwed. Do I want cleaner air in cities yes. But it doesn’t take scaring people into making cleaner air. We Republicans look at the reality of the situation not some weird religious stance like those of the left persuasion. If we need to get away from mideast oil lets drill in anwar, and off our coastlines, that would drive prices down quick. Also lets move forward on alternative fuel research rather than spending fruitless amounts of money on stem cell research, another joke, and many other liberal earmarks like bridges to nowhere. Use common sense people, we don’t need this weird garbage pushed at us like we are stupid. The problem is not the politicians it is that not enough Americans get up and do anything about the knowledge they acquire and require the Politicians to follow the voice of the people. John McCain will hear that voice and if he doesn’t then we will get louder until he hears it and changes.

Comment by gBrandt

Well I think it’s time to turn in my Republican registration and get a Libertarian one. Voting this year will simply be “which Liberal Democrat do you vote for?” I am 67 and except for Nixon i have never felt so discouraged. Where are the Conservative Leaders?

I believe the political arena has gotten so bloated with money that an honest man/woman can’t afford to run. What we need is REAL reform, not the mccain style. If you are a living breathing person, you can have a voice and a vote. No soft No hard money. A specific dollar amount each individual voter can contribute to whomever they choose.

Hilarious video from another famously angry man. I don’t know how long ago he was with Inside Edition (looks like a while) but O’Reilly blew a monster fuse when he got confused about his teleprompter – stand well clear :)

People need to realize that global warming is not a hoax. It is a natural cycle based on cycles of the sun, the Earth’s pattern around the sun, and greenhouse gases. The part that is different this time is the amount of greenhouse gases in the air is way higher than ever before and has increased in a shorter time than ever before.
As for this “cooling hoax” if any of you actually read the scientific reports and not listened to the biased media about the reports then you would know that this cooling was predicted a while ago. All the fresh water melting from the poles into the Atlantic is changing the water density and is weakening the gulf stream. This makes it so less warm water from the equatorial region reaches the northern atlantic therefore cooling the region and can impact the world.
It’s all real basic physics and chemistry but the people with their heads so far up their ass that they only pay attention to what Fox has to say about Al Gore making a profit from his movie and not about what every real scientist around the world is saying about this being a real threat.

As a young person, I get extremely disappointed in the bulk of these comments. The perspectives are scarily myopic. It’s time to get our heads out of the mud, folks. There is a lot of hate on this page – and excuse me, but comparing Barak Obama to the Black Panthers? – I thought we were trying to avoid blind dogma?

First of all, as a scientist, I can tell you that, unless you’ve abandoned science for ideology, scientists are NOT saying the Earth is cooling down as a long-term trend. Yes, there are always cycles: cycles within years, decades, centuries, etc. But there one key point, that if you can accept it, global warming cannot be questioned. And that is that carbon dioxide is a gas that traps heat in the atmosphere. If you understand that basic little bit of chemistry, physics and biology, then the fact that we’re soon going to be pumping out 40 billion tons of this stuff, leads to a relatively simple cause and effect relationship. More CO2 means hotter temperatures. Of course beyond that, the science gets more complicated because of feedback cycles but the basic point is we are going to toast ourselves if keep up the current pattern of thinking: pumping oil, burning coal, and cooking tar-sands out of Alberta using precious natural gas.

If you think we’re ever going to be able to go back to the good ‘ol days of cheap oil, I point you to two countries that will permanently prevent that : India and China. A good deal of the food price rise is due to oil and other raw materials increasing in price, those are increasing in price because demand is going up faster than supply, demand is going up because two countries (in particular) have 2 billion people as consumers who want to live just like us. So, either we’re going to need to make room for them, or change our way of thinking, living, doing things.

What you need to be looking for is a leader that recognizes the challenges of today, not yesterday; one who has the guts to push through tough reforms (that most of us won’t like but the more you know, the more you understand the need to do things differently); and someone who, more than anything else recognizes that doing something about climate change means strengthening this country in the long-run. If you can’t see that, then put your head back in the sand and wait for the storm.

Al has not proved to me that humans are causeing gloabel warming.Man has been hunting the control panel for the weather, they are not any closer today than two million years ago.Our puney little fasicest think they can control the climate. The sooner they realize the state is not GOD,the quicker we can decide how to cope with change. After all is said and done more will be said than done. GOD decides what is to be will be.

Comment by Just the Facts

Global warming is a myth. John’s buying into this is a very big and disappointing mistake. We need leaders that will not fold to those who speak loudly and often just to promote the myths they started for their own benefit. I agree with the weather channel, Gore should be sued for fraud.

John McCain is READY to be our Commander in Chief today. No on the job training needed, lots of

previous military experience and he’s a tough nut. He’ll make our enemies quake in their boots.

They should be afraid of us.

I JUST BLOGED ON JOHN McCAIN’S WEB SITE THAT I HAD VOTED REPUBLICAN SINCE 1972.
I DID NOT VOTE FOR AL GORE IN 2000.
I WILL NOT VOTE FOR JOHN McCAIN IN 2008.

This in addition to comments by alance and Marcy about the off shore drilling. Has anyone on McCain’s staff bothered to tell him that Cuba is selling drilling rights in the Gulf of Mexico to Russia and China? I don’t know about you all, but WE need to be doing the drilling in the gulf, not a foreign (and hostile) power. Do you think China would give a rip if they had a huge oil spill? Who do you think would have better safeguards in place to prevent that? Just look at their track record, boy, how stupid they must think we are, letting them in our own backyard!

A tipping point, a sea change, has been reached with regard to Nuclear Power. Now Nuclear Power is politically and economically viable. All that is required is for this or the future President to follow through, providing some legal protection, and some land grants to quadruple or more our Nuclear Power capacity. I think doubling the number of nuclear plants/piles at existing nuclear sites is a start. Next we could populate many vacated military bases with Nuclear Power sites. Now is the time to replace all our coal, oil, natural gas electric generation. Now is the time to begin converting all our transportation to electric and removing gasoline engines from the road. A poetic and just end to a 40 year long tragedy, but it will end with sweet success for America and our citizens. Scientist, engineers, lawyers, politicians, and environmentalists will all agree this is the best path from this tipping point forward.

I’ll believe global warming proponents are genuine when they embrace nuclear energy and work to dismantle the red tape required to bring reactors online. Until then it is just another attempt at global control

Comment by J Branson

The Declaration of Independence states that, as citizens, we have the “unalienable Rights… to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

The Global Warming proponents would have us trash this cherished principle and throw it out the window. Yes, they have the right to believe all the extrapolated malarky they wish, but they DON’T have the right to force everyone to live according to their “religion”. But if we allow these control freaks to put us in an economic straitjacket, they will happily do so as they lick the boots of the international socialists. Goodbye USA…

I say they need to mind their own business.
